Separate safe-place synonyms from title fragments
HAVEN, PORT, RETREAT and SHELTER share the idea of refuge. “Port” is the likely trap because it can also suggest a place or destination rather than an obvious synonym for sanctuary.
Watch for brand familiarity in the candy group
CHARMS, KINDER, WONKA and YORK are linked by confectionery names, but the connection may be less familiar depending on where you live. Treat the words as names, not descriptions of candy flavors.

Use phrase completion for purple
The final set is not a single subject category. It relies on recognizing well-known works and phrases that follow “Free,” which makes it harder than the semantic groups.
What the colors mean in Connections
- Green: generally the easiest group.
- Yellow: somewhat harder, often requiring a broader synonym or association.
- Blue: commonly more difficult because the relationship is less immediate.
- Purple: usually the toughest, often involving wordplay, titles or a phrase pattern.

A practical approach for future puzzles
- Scan for an obvious set of four and write down the exact relationship, not just a vague theme.
- Test every candidate against all 16 words; a category is valid only when four words fit more naturally together than with alternatives.
- After finding one group, reassess the remaining words because the puzzle deliberately uses overlaps and red herrings.
- Reserve phrase-completion and title-based possibilities for the end, when fewer words remain to mislead you.
- Before submitting, check that the category label explains all four entries without stretching one of them.
The Bottom Line
Connections #539 resolves to Sanctuary, Football gear, Candy names and “Free ___,” with the four word sets shown above.
