Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 23.8.2 driver added support for Starfield and reported up to 16% higher performance at 4K on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, compared with driver 23.8.1. That is AMD’s result for two specific graphics cards—not a guaranteed FPS increase for every Radeon GPU or a benchmark of today’s drivers.
What did AMD’s Starfield driver update change?
Adrenalin Edition 23.8.2 was the Radeon driver release AMD positioned as adding support for Starfield. Its release notes reported a performance increase of up to 16% at 4K for both the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT when compared with Adrenalin 23.8.1. AMD’s 23.8.2 release notes list the XTX and XT results separately, so the figure should not be generalized to other GPUs, resolutions, settings, or driver versions.
What the 16% figure does—and does not—mean
“Up to” describes AMD’s reported maximum result under its test conditions; it is not a promised gain in every scene or on every PC. The comparison was 23.8.2 against 23.8.1, not against a current driver release. AMD’s notes identify the test hardware and date for the RX 7900 XTX result: a Ryzen 7 7800X3D system with 32 GB of DDR5 memory, Windows 11 Pro, and the RX 7900 XTX, tested on August 25, 2023. This is vendor testing, not an independently verified benchmark.
Should you install 23.8.2 now?
23.8.2 is a historical 2023 release, so it is not a recommendation to replace a newer driver with an older one. If you are troubleshooting a current installation, check AMD’s official driver materials for the applicable release for your hardware and operating system. The 16% comparison only describes the jump from 23.8.1 to 23.8.2 in AMD’s specified test; it does not establish how later versions compare.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
AMD’s 23.8.2 notes also said Factory Reset was temporarily disabled following reported installation issues, with AMD Cleanup Utility suggested as a temporary option. The notes described an intermittent driver timeout or visual corruption on certain ultrawide monitors when Dynamic Resolution was set between 75% and 78%, and suggested changing that setting temporarily if affected.
How to troubleshoot low Starfield FPS on PC
Bethesda’s support guidance says, “Most issues related to game performance can be attributed to hardware.” Its checks are useful when updating a driver does not resolve low frame rates. Follow Bethesda’s PC performance troubleshooting guidance for the full support advice.

- Check the minimum system requirements. Confirm that the PC’s components meet the game’s requirements before treating a driver as the cause.
- Install the game on an SSD. Bethesda includes SSD use among its performance recommendations.
- Check the graphics driver. Make sure the installed driver is appropriate for the GPU; for Radeon hardware, use AMD’s official driver materials rather than assuming the 2023 23.8.2 release is current.
- Select the primary GPU on a multi-GPU system. Check that Starfield is using the intended graphics processor rather than an integrated or secondary GPU.
- Disable overlays if low frame rate persists. Bethesda suggests trying Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar off as a troubleshooting step.
Do not confuse the driver benchmark with FSR 3
AMD’s 23.8.2-versus-23.8.1 result is a driver comparison. FSR 3 is a separate Starfield feature Bethesda announced; it combines upscaling with frame generation. Those are different changes, and the 16% result in the 23.8.2 notes should not be attributed to FSR 3. See Bethesda’s FSR 3 announcement for the feature details.

AMD’s later Adrenalin 23.10.2 release notes listed an intermittent Starfield crash on Radeon RX 7000 Series among issues fixed. That is a specific note about a later release, not evidence that every version or Radeon system had the issue. It also reinforces why a historical performance claim should be kept tied to its exact driver comparison.
