The original Lenovo Legion Go is a Windows gaming handheld built around an unusually large 8.8-inch screen and detachable controllers. Those features make it appealing for players who want a flexible, more PC-like handheld, but its high native resolution can be demanding for modern games, Windows is not always comfortable to navigate with a gamepad, and battery life depends heavily on the workload. It is best suited to someone who values screen size and control flexibility over a compact design and effortless handheld simplicity.
What is the Lenovo Legion Go?
The original Legion Go is a handheld Windows gaming PC using AMD Ryzen Z1-series processors. Lenovo’s launch announcement describes its detachable controllers and USB-C connectivity. Because this review concerns the original model, check the generation and regional configuration when comparing specifications or shopping; Lenovo notes that configurations can vary by model and region.
What stands out: the screen and detachable controls
A large, high-resolution display
Lenovo’s PSREF specification record lists an 8.8-inch, 2560×1600 display with a 144Hz refresh rate for the cited configuration. The generous screen gives games more room and makes browsing or other Windows tasks feel less cramped than they would on a smaller panel.
That resolution is an option, not a promise that demanding games will run smoothly at the panel’s maximum settings. PC Gamer’s January 2024 review notes that native resolution is better suited to browsing or less demanding games than the newest demanding titles. For those games, expect to lower the resolution, graphics quality, or both to find a practical balance between image detail and performance.

- TAKE FULL CONTROL – Get ready to dominate with the ergonomic Legion TrueStrike Controllers, designed for all-day comfort and precision. With their anti-slip texture, you’ll stay in control during even the most intense battles.
Controllers that can detach
The detachable controllers add flexibility: you can use them attached for handheld play or remove them for other ways of positioning the controls. PC Gamer also identifies the controller design as a strength. This makes the Legion Go more adaptable than a handheld with permanently fixed controls, though it does not make the overall device smaller when carried.
Windows versatility comes with handheld friction
Running Windows preserves general PC functionality, but a desktop operating system is not inherently designed for controller-only use on a touchscreen. WIRED’s review criticizes the touch and controller experience. Windows Central’s review, updated in November 2024, reports that Lenovo shipped interface updates after launch. The practical experience can therefore depend on software version; launch-era criticism should not automatically be treated as a description of every later firmware build.

Windows is most valuable if you want the flexibility of a PC beyond launching games. If your priority is a console-like experience that is easy to navigate entirely with a gamepad, the operating-system interface is a meaningful compromise to weigh.
Battery life depends on the task
Tom’s Guide measured 4 hours and 6 minutes of continuous web surfing at 150 nits in its December 2023 review; that is a web-browsing result, not a gaming-runtime estimate. See its test and review for the stated conditions. Reviews including WIRED’s describe battery life as a drawback, but the runtime you get will vary with the game, screen brightness, performance settings, and workload.

Size, storage, and connecting accessories
Reviewers describe the Legion Go as large or bulky, so its 8.8-inch screen and detachable controls come with a portability tradeoff. Consider whether you prefer the bigger display and adaptable controls enough to carry a less compact device; the available reviews do not establish a specific weight or a universal comfort verdict.
Lenovo’s launch materials specify a microSD slot and USB-C ports with DisplayPort and Power Delivery support. A compatible microSD card can add storage, while a suitable USB-C dock or hub can connect an external display and peripherals. Check the card’s compatibility and capacity support, and confirm a dock’s power and display specifications before buying. Lenovo also announced Legion Go accessories in August 2024; its accessory announcement establishes the product category, not compatibility of every accessory with every configuration.

Is the Legion Go worth it?
The Legion Go makes the most sense if a large screen, detachable controls, and Windows flexibility are central to what you want from a handheld. It is a less natural fit if you expect demanding games to run at the panel’s full resolution without settings changes, want a compact device, need long gaming sessions away from power, or prefer a controller-first interface that behaves like a dedicated console.
When comparing handhelds, focus on practical game performance at settings you would actually use, battery results measured under a stated workload, display size, portability, control flexibility, and how easily the operating system can be managed with a gamepad. These priorities matter more than treating the Legion Go’s resolution or refresh-rate figures as a guarantee of game performance.
