The ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q remains a strong gaming monitor if you want sharp 1440p resolution, fast refresh and native NVIDIA G-SYNC. Its motion performance and input lag were standout strengths in independent reviews, but its low contrast makes dark-room blacks look gray, and it has no HDR support. Because it is an older, discontinued model, condition and warranty matter as much as the specifications when considering one today.
What the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q offers
The PG279Q is a 27-inch monitor with a 2560 × 1440 IPS/AHVA panel, a native 144Hz refresh rate and an overclock option up to 165Hz. It supports NVIDIA G-SYNC and ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur). These features make it a gaming-focused QHD display rather than a modern HDR screen.
RTINGS’ review, updated April 9, 2020, describes it as a great gaming monitor with a 1440p IPS panel. Tom’s Hardware likewise highlighted its sharp, bright image, QHD resolution, G-SYNC and 165Hz maximum refresh. RTINGS review; Tom’s Hardware review.
How it performs for gaming
Motion and responsiveness
RTINGS rated response time at maximum refresh and input lag as outstanding. That combination helps keep motion clear and controls responsive in fast games. The 144Hz native rate is already a substantial step up from standard 60Hz displays; the optional overclock to 165Hz offers a further increase where the monitor and system can run it reliably.

G-SYNC and ULMB
Native NVIDIA G-SYNC synchronizes the display’s refresh with a compatible NVIDIA graphics card’s frame output, reducing tearing when frame rate varies. ULMB is also listed as a supported motion-blur-reduction feature. These are distinct approaches to motion handling, so choose settings according to the game and your priorities rather than assuming every feature is used at once. Image quality beyond games
The IPS/AHVA panel’s wide viewing angles help when you are not sitting directly in front of the screen, while 2560 × 1440 resolution gives a 27-inch desktop more workspace than 1080p. Its ergonomics also make it practical for office tasks and multimedia viewing, in addition to gaming.

The dark-room limitation
The main image-quality compromise is low native contrast. In a dim room, black areas can look gray rather than deep black, which is noticeable in dark games and films. RTINGS also records no HDR support. The available specifications do not establish a wide-gamut mode, so do not buy this model expecting modern HDR or wide-gamut features. RTINGS review.
PG279Q vs. PG279QZ
RTINGS identifies the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QZ as the model that replaced the PG279Q and describes it as nearly identical overall, with brightness among the differences. That makes the QZ the closest documented comparison, but it does not establish that either model is the better purchase at current prices. Compare the actual unit, condition, warranty and asking price rather than relying on the model name alone. RTINGS review and model comparison notes.

What to check before buying one now
The PG279Q is an older model, so present-day availability may be limited to used or refurbished units and can change over time. No current stock or price is established here. Before committing, check the specific listing and confirm:
- Whether the monitor is new, refurbished or used, and what warranty or return period applies.
- That the panel has no defects that matter to you, such as dead pixels or visible uniformity problems.
- Which inputs and cables are included, and whether they suit your graphics card and intended refresh rate.
- Whether the seller documents that G-SYNC and the high-refresh modes work on the unit being sold.
- How the asking price compares with the PG279QZ and newer alternatives that may offer HDR, higher refresh rates or other features you value.
For a discounted unit in verified good condition, the PG279Q’s combination of QHD, high refresh and native G-SYNC can still suit gaming well. If deep blacks, HDR or a warranty-backed new purchase is central to your choice, its age and panel limitations make a newer alternative worth comparing.
