In Gears of War: E-Day, an icon is a simple, single-color multiplayer graphic used in lobbies and when marking an enemy or object. An emblem is the background behind your gamertag, while a title is the short text displayed beneath it. Story symbols such as the Crimson Omen and the COG oath connect the customization system to the events of Emergence Day, but not every generic mark has a confirmed lore meaning.
What does E-Day mean?
E-Day means Emergence Day, the invasion in which the Locust Horde erupts from beneath the planet Sera. Xbox’s official synopsis places Gears of War: E-Day fourteen years before the original Gears of War, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago facing that first large-scale Locust assault.
Because the game depicts the beginning of the invasion, its imagery repeatedly uses ruptured ground, E-holes and military insignia associated with the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG).
Icon, emblem and title: what is the difference?

These are separate customization layers, not three names for the same symbol. Changing an emblem does not automatically change the icon used for marking, and a title is text rather than a graphic.

How multiplayer icons work
Where your equipped icon appears
The Coalition’s official multiplayer overview identifies two key locations: the icon sits above your player emblem in multiplayer lobbies, and the same equipped icon is displayed when you mark an enemy or object during a match.
How icons are earned
Nearly every customization item can be earned through play. Challenges can unlock poses, weapon-skin sets, banners, emblems, icons and base characters. The Coalition reported more than 60 character skins at launch in 2026; that figure describes the breadth of customization, not a confirmed count of lore symbols or icons.
What does the Crimson Omen mean?
The Crimson Omen is the recognizable franchise mark associated with Gears of War. In the official E-Day controller announcement, a cracked, laser-etched surface exposes “the iconic Crimson Omen” beneath erupting ground and E-holes.
That presentation supports a visual reading: the Crimson Omen is the franchise symbol revealed through the catastrophe of Emergence Day. The announcement does not provide a separate in-universe etymology explaining why the emblem has that name, so claims about an additional hidden meaning go beyond what the official material establishes.

What does the COG oath inscription mean?
The Collector’s Edition announcement identifies the inscription I shall hold my place in the machine
as a line from the COG oath. In context, it expresses the Coalition’s emphasis on duty, order and each person maintaining an assigned position within the larger war machine.

The sentence is an oath line, not a definition of every COG graphic or multiplayer icon. Its meaning comes from the organization’s values and the way the inscription is presented with the Collector’s Edition.

No complete official, symbol-by-symbol glossary has been published for every individual E-Day icon, banner or emblem in the available material. A graphic’s shape alone is not enough to establish hidden lore.
- Use the in-game label when one is provided.
- Use an official explanation when the game or Xbox identifies the symbol.
- Do not assign a faction, event or character meaning to a generic multiplayer mark solely from its appearance.
This distinction matters because multiplayer customization contains both story-connected imagery and functional identity graphics. A symbol can be available as a collectible without having a separately documented narrative explanation.

How to read symbols in context
- Check the location. A mark above a name in a lobby or on a marked target is functioning as an icon; the background behind the name is the emblem.
- Check whether it is text. A short phrase below the name is a title, not an icon or emblem.
- Look for an official label. Treat the label or description as the authority for a specific item.
- Separate visual association from confirmed lore. The Crimson Omen’s appearance through E-Day’s ruptured ground is an official visual association, while a full in-universe explanation for every mark has not been published.
