For recording console gameplay on a Mac, the strongest documented options are the Elgato HD60 X, Elgato 4K X, and AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 (GC553G2). Choose by your Mac’s processor and macOS version, its USB bandwidth, and the resolution and frame rate you want to record—not just the signal you want to pass through to a monitor. The GC553G2 manual says macOS cannot capture HDR, while Elgato says 4K X HDR capture is unavailable in some modes.

These are manufacturer-stated requirements and capabilities, not the results of a comparative quality test. For another lead, OBS lists the ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Box CU4K30 and FHD120 as certified capture cards for macOS. Certification indicates OBS testing against its criteria, but it is not a substitute for checking the model’s detailed Mac requirements and supported modes. See OBS-certified devices.
How to tell whether a capture card will work with your Mac
Check the processor and macOS version
Find out whether your Mac has Apple Silicon or an Intel processor, then check its macOS version against the card’s current requirements. The HD60 X and 4K X list macOS 11 or later; the GC553G2 manual lists macOS 13/14 or later. A model’s general “Mac compatible” label does not mean it supports every Mac or every operating system release.
Match the USB port’s speed, not just its shape
A USB-C connector does not by itself confirm that a port can deliver the required bandwidth. For 4K X, Elgato specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 for full capture resolution and says Gen 1 reduces capture resolution. The GC553G2 manual calls for USB 3.2 Gen 2. Check the port specification and the cable supplied with the card, and connect directly to a suitable port when possible.

Confirm capture software compatibility
Elgato notes that third-party apps such as OBS can have different system requirements from its 4K Capture Utility. Its Apple Silicon compatibility table marks Game Capture HD and OBS Link incompatible with Apple Silicon, so do not assume that every Elgato application or older workflow works on an M-series Mac. The 4K X product page lists OBS among compatible applications. OBS also maintains a version table by macOS release; check it for your operating system before installing or updating. Capture resolution is what the device sends to the Mac for recording or streaming. Passthrough describes the signal sent onward to a connected display. A card may pass a higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate signal to your monitor than it records on macOS. For example, AVerMedia lists GC553G2 passthrough up to 2160p144 but recording up to 2160p60 on macOS; the manual’s 2160p144 recording figure applies to Windows with RECentral, not Mac recording.

Before buying, match three things: the console or other source’s output mode, the recording mode you want in the Mac app, and the passthrough mode your monitor needs. For 4K X, check Elgato’s supported capture and passthrough modes and its HDR restrictions rather than inferring a recording mode from a passthrough specification. Elgato 4K X modes and details.

How to save gameplay clips on a Mac
- Check your Mac: identify its processor type, macOS version, memory, and USB port generation.
- Choose the recording mode: decide the resolution and frame rate you want saved to the Mac, separately from your display’s passthrough mode.
- Verify the complete setup: compare the card’s requirements with your Mac, cable, source device, monitor, and capture app. Check HDR support in the specific macOS mode if HDR matters to you.
- Connect and configure: follow the card maker’s setup instructions, select the capture device in a compatible recording app, and confirm the input and recording settings before capturing a full session.
- Record a short test clip: review the saved file for the expected picture, sound, frame rate, and HDR behavior before relying on the setup for a longer recording.
What to verify before ordering
- Exact model and revision, current macOS requirements, and Apple Silicon or Intel support.
- Minimum memory and USB generation, plus whether your Mac has a port that meets the requirement.
- Recording modes on macOS—not only the card’s headline passthrough resolution or its Windows specifications.
- Compatibility of your chosen recording app with both the capture device and your macOS version.
- HDR support for the exact card, mode, software, and operating system combination.
