To design a Nintendo Switch skin, start with a template made for your exact console model, place your artwork around its cutouts, then either make the skin yourself or send the design to a custom-skin service. A standard Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED do not share one universal template, so check model compatibility before you start.
Choose the right Switch skin template
Templates are model-specific: the console shape, controls, openings, and included accessories differ. Confirm whether the file or service covers the standard Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED. Some listings group the original Switch and OLED together, but that does not mean every template or cut file fits both.
- Retailer design templates: StyleFlip provides a downloadable design template and requests finished artwork as a layered PSD, PDF, or AI file so its designers can adjust the manufacturing template. StyleFlip’s template and design guidance.
- Custom skin service: DecalGirl offers custom skins for original and OLED Switch models and a free Photoshop template. Its product page describes a finished kit for the console, dock, and Joy-Cons. DecalGirl’s custom Nintendo Switch skin.
- Online personalization: Wrappz lets customers choose a pre-designed or custom template, add images and text, and order a personalized vinyl skin. A separate listing offers a combined console-and-controller personalization option. Wrappz’s create-your-own console skin workflow and console-and-controller listing.
- Third-party vector cut files: Marketplace sellers offer files such as SVG, AI, CDR, DXF, EPS, and PDF. Coverage can include Joy-Cons, console, dock, charger, and accents; files may target Cricut, Silhouette, laser, or CNC workflows. How to design your own Nintendo Switch skin
- Identify the hardware. Check the model name and choose a template explicitly intended for that version. Do not assume a standard Switch file fits a Lite or OLED console.
- Open the template at its native scale. Keep its cut lines, holes, and guides on separate layers from your artwork. If you are submitting to StyleFlip, retain editable layers and export in one of its requested formats: PSD, PDF, or AI.
- Place artwork clear of openings. Keep key text, faces, and other important details away from the button, joystick, vent, port, speaker, and edge cutouts shown in the template. Inspect all included pieces, not just the console panel.
- Check scale and orientation before production. Print a paper proof or inspect the cut file at 100% scale, then align it with the device. Correct any size or orientation mismatch before using vinyl. The cited providers and listings do not establish one universal Switch skin dimension.
- Choose how to produce it. If making it yourself, you need compatible vinyl and the equipment and skill to print or cut it accurately. Otherwise, upload your design to a retailer that manufactures the finished skin.
DIY cutting or ordering a finished custom skin?
The main trade-off is control versus production work. A DIY template gives you more control over materials and cutting, but you take responsibility for scale, cut accuracy, and fit. A finished-skin service handles production and offers a model-specific product, while you rely on its template and need to confirm that it serves your region.

What to check before you download or order
- Exact model coverage: Verify console variant and whether the file includes Joy-Cons, dock, or other accessories you want to cover.
- File and software compatibility: Check whether the template is PSD, PDF, AI, SVG, DXF, or another format your software or cutter can use.
- Scale and cut-line quality: Especially for marketplace files, inspect the seller’s stated device version and ask whether the dimensions and cut contours are intended for your hardware.
- License: Review the seller’s terms for personal use, commercial use, and permitted redistribution.
- Material and application: StyleFlip describes its skin material as removable 3M vinyl with air-release, bubble-free installation. Wrappz describes bubble-free application and residue-free removal. Those are provider descriptions, not independent durability or fit tests; follow the chosen seller’s current product instructions.
