Install DOSBox from Ubuntu’s dosbox package, then mount a folder containing your game files as a DOS drive and launch the game from DOSBox’s prompt. The emulator does not include games; you’ll need your own game files.
Install DOSBox on Ubuntu
Ubuntu distributes DOSBox through APT in the Universe repository component. The Ubuntu package index lists it for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, 24.04 LTS, 25.10, and 26.04 LTS; the package version differs by release. See the Ubuntu DOSBox package index for current package information.

Open Terminal.

Refresh the package list and install DOSBox:
sudo apt update sudo apt install dosbox -
Start it by entering
dosboxin Terminal, or open the installed DOSBox application from Ubuntu’s application launcher.
If APT says it cannot locate the package, check your Ubuntu release and whether the Universe component is enabled. Ubuntu’s package-management documentation explains installing and managing software with APT.

How do I start a game in DOSBox?
DOSBox opens at its own Z:> prompt. Your Ubuntu folders are not automatically visible there. First put the game files in a dedicated folder, such as ~/DOSGAMES, then mount that folder as drive C:.

At the DOSBox prompt, enter:
mount c ~/DOSGAMES C: dir -
Use
dirto see the folders and files available on the virtual C: drive. Change to the game’s folder, replacingGAMEFOLDERwith its actual name:Rank #2

Run the game’s own executable or installer. For example, if the files include an executable named
INSTALL, enterINSTALL. The correct filename depends on the game; check the directory listing or the game’s documentation.
The mount maps a host folder to a drive inside DOSBox; it does not create a disk partition or copy files. The DOSBox v0.74-3 manual explains the Linux syntax: “In Linux, “mount c /home/username” will give you a C drive in DOSBox which points to /home/username in Linux.” Mount only the game directory DOSBox needs rather than exposing a broader part of your Ubuntu home folder. Should I type the mount commands each time?
You can mount the folder manually whenever DOSBox starts, or have DOSBox run the commands automatically. Manual entry is simple to try; startup commands save time on later launches.

C:The DOSBox manual documents [autoexec] as the place for commands to run at startup. Configuration-file locations can vary by build and packaging, so consult the installed build’s documentation rather than assuming one path applies to every Ubuntu system.
What if the game needs a CD, has no sound, or behaves oddly?
Games that need a CD
Some games require their original disc or a disc image. Depending on the title, you may need to mount the game folder as a hard drive and mount the CD or image separately. This is not needed for every game; use the game’s instructions and the DOSBox manual’s guidance for CD-ROM or image mounting.

No sound
Check the game’s setup utility or sound autodetection, if available, and choose settings compatible with DOSBox’s emulated sound hardware. A particular Sound Blaster setting is not guaranteed to work for every title; the right choice depends on the game.
Mouse, fullscreen, or performance issues

Ctrl+F10toggles mouse capture in DOSBox. Mouse behavior can still depend on the game and configuration. -
Alt+Entertoggles fullscreen in DOSBox. -
If a game runs too fast, too slowly, or crashes, begin with the default configuration and adjust settings only in response to the specific problem. The manual describes options such as CPU core, cycle count, memory, and emulated machine settings, but changing them does not guarantee a fix.
Will every old game work?
No. DOSBox recreates a DOS-compatible PC environment for many classic games, but compatibility varies by title. The DOSBox manual cautions: “While we are hoping that one day DOSBox will run all programs ever made for the PC, we are not there yet.” Without the game’s name and version, compatibility cannot be determined in advance.
