Microsoft’s Xbox-related business did not fall 7% in the fourth quarter of FY2025. For the quarter ended June 30, 2025, gaming revenue rose 10% year over year, while Xbox content and services revenue increased 13% (12% in constant currency). Hardware was weaker over the full fiscal year, but growth in content and services lifted annual gaming revenue 9%.
The “record fiscal year” description needs similar context: CEO Satya Nadella used it for Microsoft overall, not as a disclosed record for standalone Xbox revenue. Microsoft’s results show a stronger, broader gaming business alongside declining hardware—not a single Xbox revenue line moving in one direction.
What Microsoft reported in FY2025 Q4
Microsoft announced results for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, on July 30. It reports gaming within its More Personal Computing segment, alongside businesses such as Windows, devices and search advertising; Xbox is not a standalone reporting segment with one combined revenue figure.
| Measure | FY2025 Q4 or FY2025 result | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming revenue, Q4 | Up 10% year over year | The broad gaming business grew in the quarter. |
| Xbox content and services revenue, Q4 | Up 13% year over year; up 12% in constant currency | Digital content, subscriptions and related services grew. |
| More Personal Computing revenue, Q4 | $13.451 billion, up 9% | This is a wider Microsoft segment, not Xbox revenue. |
| Gaming revenue, full fiscal year | Up $2.0 billion, or 9% | Annual growth reflected content and services, partly offset by hardware decline. |
| Xbox content and services, full fiscal year | Up 16% | The services-and-content category grew faster than gaming overall. |
| Xbox hardware, full fiscal year | Declined; a specific percentage is not stated in the cited annual report | The annual result was not evidence of stronger console hardware. |
| Game Pass, full fiscal year | Nearly $5 billion in revenue for the first time | This is revenue, not a disclosed profit figure. |
Microsoft said first-party content and Xbox Game Pass helped drive the Q4 content-and-services result. Its FY2025 Q4 earnings release and earnings-call materials report growth, not a 7% Q4 decline. Without a source identifying the period and metric behind that 7% figure, it should not be attributed to this quarter.

What “record fiscal year” means
Nadella called FY2025 a record fiscal year in the context of Microsoft’s overall business. Microsoft reported full-year revenue of $281.724 billion, up 15%; operating income of $128.528 billion, up 17%; and net income of $101.832 billion, up 16%. Microsoft Cloud revenue exceeded $168 billion, up 23%, while Azure revenue exceeded $75 billion, up 34%.
Those company-wide figures are not Xbox results. Microsoft’s disclosures establish that gaming revenue grew for the year, but they do not provide a separate annual Xbox revenue total or explicitly declare a record for standalone Xbox revenue.

Why gaming grew while hardware declined
Microsoft’s annual report says FY2025 gaming revenue rose by $2.0 billion, or 9%, with the increase coming from Xbox content and services and partly offset by lower Xbox hardware revenue. Content and services grew 16% for the year. Microsoft cited the Activision Blizzard acquisition and Game Pass as drivers; it did not attribute the entire increase to either one.
This mix matters because hardware and services respond to different sources of demand. Console revenue depends on hardware shipments, pricing and the installed base. Content and services can draw revenue from subscriptions, first- and third-party games, in-game purchases, cloud gaming, advertising and other services. Microsoft defines Xbox content and services to include first- and third-party content, games and in-game content, Game Pass, other subscriptions, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising and other cloud services. The FY2025 Q4 metrics page sets out that definition.

Activision Blizzard also changes the year-over-year comparison: its businesses and franchises, including Call of Duty, Candy Crush and World of Warcraft, became part of Microsoft’s gaming portfolio. The annual report identifies the acquisition’s impact as a contributor, but does not quantify it as the sole cause of growth. Microsoft does not disclose enough hardware detail in the cited materials to calculate console unit sales, the precise hardware revenue decline or its effect on margins.
What Game Pass and engagement figures do—and do not—show
Microsoft said Game Pass generated nearly $5 billion in revenue during FY2025, its first year at that level. It also reported 500 million monthly active users across platforms and devices, and more than 500 million hours of gameplay streamed through the cloud during the fiscal year.

- Microsoft did not disclose a current Game Pass subscriber count in the cited FY2025 materials.
- Nearly $5 billion is annual Game Pass revenue, not evidence of the service’s profit or margins.
- Cloud-streamed hours show usage, but do not by themselves establish profitability or the size of the cloud-gaming audience.
Microsoft also highlighted record Minecraft monthly active usage and revenue during the quarter, with the Minecraft movie boosting engagement. It said 50 million people had played Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, with total play time exceeding 2 billion hours. That is a reach figure, not a sales tally. Other games Microsoft called out included Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered.

Microsoft’s FY2025 messaging described a business reaching players across platforms, not only through its own hardware. Nadella said Microsoft was the top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation during the quarter; Microsoft also pointed to releases such as Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered on other platforms.

That approach can put Microsoft games in front of more players and create software revenue beyond the Xbox installed base. The trade-off is that games available on rival systems offer less exclusivity as a reason to buy Xbox hardware. The reported figures do not establish whether cross-platform publishing improves Microsoft’s long-term console economics, or how much any change in hardware demand is caused by that strategy. They do support the view that Microsoft is treating Xbox increasingly as a cross-device gaming platform rather than only a console business.
What Microsoft expected in the next quarter
For FY2026 Q1, Microsoft forecast More Personal Computing revenue of $12.4 billion to $12.9 billion. It expected gaming revenue to decline by a mid- to high-single-digit percentage against a strong comparable quarter, with Xbox content and services revenue down by a mid-single-digit percentage. The outlook was a reminder that a strong FY2025 close did not guarantee uninterrupted growth in the following quarter.
How to read the “down 7%” claim
For Microsoft’s FY2025 Q4, the supported figures are gaming revenue up 10% and Xbox content and services up 13% as reported. The 7% decline does not match either of those disclosed Q4 measures. It may concern another reporting period or metric, but the figure cannot be reliably explained without a source specifying which one.
The apparent contradiction is therefore between different parts of the business and different scopes of reporting: Microsoft’s company-wide fiscal year was a record, annual gaming revenue grew, and Xbox hardware declined. Services and content—not a disclosed surge in console sales—accounted for the gaming business’s annual growth.
