The approval applied to Apple’s EU marketplace system under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). It did not put the Epic Games Store in Apple’s App Store or make it available worldwide.
What Apple approved—and what it did not
Apple approved the Epic Games Store marketplace app for distribution through its alternative-app-marketplace system in the EU. That marketplace is a storefront Epic users can install on supported devices; it is not the same app as Fortnite, and approval of one does not automatically approve the other.
Nor was this an App Store listing. EU users install the Epic marketplace through Apple’s alternative distribution process, which includes marketplace authorization and Apple’s notarization review of apps. Apple describes the framework in its EU DMA developer documentation.
Why Epic criticized the initial rejections
Epic said Apple rejected its submission twice during notarization. According to Epic, Apple objected that Epic’s “Install” button resembled Apple’s “Get” button in design and placement, and that Epic’s “In-app purchases” label was too similar to Apple’s “In-App Purchases” wording. Epic argued that these were ordinary interface conventions and called the rejections arbitrary and obstructive. Those explanations are Epic’s account of Apple’s review, not independently established findings.

Epic said it referred the matter to the European Commission. Contemporary reporting said Apple later approved the marketplace after Epic resubmitted it. Apple did not thereby admit that its earlier reviews violated the DMA. Reporting also said the marketplace rejection was separate from Fortnite, which Apple had cleared independently. Why the decision was limited to the EU
The DMA requires designated gatekeeper platforms to allow certain forms of competition. Apple introduced alternative marketplaces in the EU with changes associated with iOS 17.4. The framework gives developers a route to distribute apps outside Apple’s App Store, but it does not amount to unrestricted sideloading: Apple requires marketplace authorization and notarization, and its EU terms also include commercial conditions and fees.

Apple says those safeguards address risks including malware, fraud, privacy, security and support. Epic’s opposing concern is that review controlled by the platform owner can delay or hinder competing marketplaces. The European Commission is responsible for assessing whether Apple’s implementation complies with the DMA; Apple’s stated rationale and Epic’s criticism are competing positions, not a settled ruling on this particular rejection. Approval was not the same as launch
The approval cleared a review hurdle, but users did not get the marketplace that day. Epic launched its mobile store on August 16, 2024, including on iOS in the EU. Its initial mobile lineup included Fortnite, Fall Guys and Rocket League Sideswipe, with the store intended to support other developers over time. Epic announced the launch on its official site.

What changed—and what did not

How this fits the wider Apple–Epic dispute
The conflict stretches back to August 2020, when Epic introduced an alternative payment option in Fortnite and Apple removed the game from its App Store. That dispute concerned App Store rules, payments and commissions. The July 2024 episode was narrower: it concerned notarization of Epic’s EU marketplace submission.
Apple’s March 2024 termination of Epic Games Sweden’s developer account, followed by its reinstatement after regulatory scrutiny, was another episode in the confrontation—not the same incident as the July submission review. Where Epic’s mobile marketplace is available now
Availability has expanded since the 2024 EU launch. As of August 18, 2026, Epic’s support information lists the Epic Games Store for iPhone and iPad in the EU, and for iPhone in Japan and Brazil. It lists no iPad availability in Japan. Epic’s mobile download page and support pages do not agree on whether Brazil is already available or planned for later in 2026, so check the current regional support page before relying on Brazil availability. Epic’s country availability page is the more specific support reference; its mobile page presents the broader download information.
Epic lists Android availability worldwide subject to legal restrictions. The Epic Games Store marketplace is not generally available on iPhone or iPad in the United States through the EU-style alternative-marketplace route. Fortnite’s availability through a separate arrangement should not be taken as proof that Epic’s marketplace itself is available there.

Requirements and installation considerations
Epic’s current support information lists iOS 17.6 or later for EU iPhones, iPadOS 18 or later for EU iPads, and iOS 26.2 or later for iPhones in Japan. It estimates the marketplace app at about 25 MB. Requirements can change, so consult Epic’s installation guide and system requirements for the current instructions. Epic says installation is more streamlined on iOS and iPadOS 18.6 and later; newer versions may prompt users in Settings to allow apps from Epic.
- Region: You must be in a supported country or region to install the marketplace. Eligibility can depend on location and account or device settings.
- Operating system: A device running an older version than Epic’s listed minimum may not be eligible.
- Different Epic apps: Epic’s ordinary mobile app is a companion app for features such as account security and chat; it is not the Epic Games Store marketplace. Epic explains the distinction on its mobile app page.
- Leaving a supported region: Epic says access to installing new marketplace apps can be affected outside supported regions. Its current support material differs on how long updates may continue for users who leave; it is safer to check Epic’s access guidance for the current rule rather than assume a fixed grace period.
What the approval means for players and developers
For players in supported regions, Epic’s marketplace offers another way to get Epic games, alongside Epic’s own rewards and any third-party titles the store supports. It also means managing another storefront, its installation permissions, updates and support. Refunds, parental controls and purchase handling may involve Epic or an individual game developer rather than Apple, and available payment methods or prices can vary by title and region. Epic advertises 5% to 20% Epic Rewards on eligible transactions, subject to its terms and current offers; that is not a guarantee that every purchase will cost less.
For developers, alternative distribution can create a route to customers beyond Apple’s App Store, but it remains subject to Apple’s EU framework and the commercial terms selected. Epic’s general store FAQ describes an 88% developer/12% Epic revenue share for its broader Epic Games Store program; that figure should not be assumed to govern every mobile title or agreement. The July 2024 approval was a meaningful EU-specific opening, but it was a single marketplace decision within a continuing regulatory and commercial dispute—not a worldwide end to Apple’s control over iOS app distribution.
