Open PCSX2, complete BIOS setup, then choose System → Start File and select your PS2 ISO. For a permanent library entry, add the folder containing the image under Settings → Game List. PCSX2 needs both a readable game image and a BIOS dumped from your own PlayStation 2.
What an ISO is—and what it is not
An ISO is a digital disc image: a file representing the data on a PlayStation 2 game disc. It is not the emulator or the console firmware.
- ISO: the game-disc image PCSX2 reads.
- BIOS: firmware dumped from a PS2 console; PCSX2 requires it to boot games.
- PCSX2: the emulator that runs the image.
- Memory card: a separate virtual device where game saves are stored.
Use a legally created or legitimately obtained game image and your own BIOS dump. PCSX2 does not provide BIOS downloads. See the official BIOS guide and disc-dumping guide.
What you need before launching
- A current PCSX2 build. The project offers Stable and Nightly releases; Stable favors fewer regressions, while Nightly delivers development changes sooner. Download options and platform instructions are in the official running guide.
- A BIOS dumped from your own PS2.
- A valid, uncompressed PS2 ISO, preferably a verified dump of a disc you own.
- Enough local storage for the image and a controller or keyboard.
- Hardware that meets the game’s needs. The listed minimums include Windows 10, macOS 11, or Ubuntu 22.04/Linux, an x86-64 CPU with SSE4.1 and a PassMark single-thread score of at least 2000, 8 GB RAM, and Vulkan 1.1, Direct3D 11, or OpenGL 3.3 graphics support. Requirements vary considerably by game and upscaling settings; consult PCSX2’s requirements.
Install PCSX2 and configure the BIOS
- Install or extract PCSX2 for your operating system. On Windows portable builds, extract the archive and run
pcsx2-qt. Windows also requires the latest x64 Visual C++ runtime. macOS uses an application bundle. Linux offers AppImage and Flatpak packages; an AppImage may needchmod +x [path-to-AppImage-file]. - Launch PCSX2 and follow the first-time wizard.
- When it asks for a BIOS directory, choose the folder that actually contains your extracted BIOS files.
- Place your legally dumped BIOS files there, refresh the list if necessary, select a detected BIOS, and finish setup.
If no BIOS appears, the files may still be archived, incomplete, corrupt, or located in a different directory. Do not use a downloaded “BIOS pack.” The official guide explains dumping and optional ReDump hash verification at pcsx2.net/docs/setup/bios/.

Launch one ISO directly
- Open PCSX2.
- Select System → Start File.
- Browse to the folder containing the ISO and select the actual image file.
- Wait for PCSX2 to mount it and boot the game.
This is the quickest test because it does not require configuring a library folder. Fast Boot is enabled by default, so PCSX2 may skip the PS2 BIOS animation. To see that animation, use Settings → BIOS → Fast Boot and disable it. The current menu path is documented in the PCSX2 FAQ.
If the setup wizard did not configure input, open PCSX2’s controller settings, select the detected device, map the buttons, and test them before blaming the ISO.
Add an ISO folder to the game list
- Open Settings → Game List.
- Add the folder where your ISO files are stored.
- Enable recursive scanning if games are arranged in subfolders.
- Return to the game list and wait for the scan.
- Double-click a detected game to launch it.
Adding a directory only tells PCSX2 where to scan; it does not move or copy any image. Recursive scanning is recommended but optional. Use System → Start File when you want to test a single image without scanning a whole drive.

Prepare the ISO file correctly
- Extract an ISO from ZIP, 7z, or RAR before selecting it unless your particular build explicitly supports that compressed format.
- Select the image itself, not the archive or its parent folder.
- Do not rename an unrelated file to
.iso; the contents must be a valid PS2 disc image. - Store images in a stable local folder. Avoid temporary download directories and cloud-only files that may not be available offline.
- While troubleshooting, use a short, simple path and clearly named folders.
Create an ISO from your own PS2 disc
If you have the physical disc but no image, PCSX2’s official disc guide documents platform-specific methods. A standard optical drive that supports the disc’s DVD or CD media is required, and a bad dump can cause freezes or loading failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWindows with Media Preservation Frontend
- Insert the PS2 disc.
- Open Media Preservation Frontend and choose Scan for Discs.
- Confirm the PS2 system/media type and optical drive.
- Choose an output path if desired, then click Start Dumping.
- Wait for completion and safely eject the disc.
ImgBurn is another Windows method listed by the official documentation.
macOS
Disk Utility, dd, and cdrdao are documented options depending on the media. Disk Utility creates a .cdr file; the guide says to rename that file to .iso because the contents are identical but PCSX2 does not support the .cdr extension.

Fix common ISO problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| ISO is missing from the picker | Still archived, wrong folder, disconnected/cloud-only drive, inaccessible path, or invalid image | Extract it, confirm it exists locally, move a test copy to a simple folder, and try System → Start File. |
| Game is absent from the library | The containing folder was not added or subfolders are not being scanned | Use Settings → Game List, add the correct folder, and enable recursive scanning when needed. |
| “No BIOS” or no BIOS is selectable | Wrong directory, archived/incomplete dump, or unofficial BIOS | Select the folder containing the BIOS files, refresh, and repeat the official dump process if necessary. |
| Black screen or freeze | Bad dump, damaged BIOS, game-specific compatibility issue, Fast Boot behavior, or a setting problem | Test a verified dump, disable Fast Boot under Settings → BIOS, restore defaults, and check the compatibility database. |
| Game runs slowly | Game-specific CPU/GPU load, renderer, or internal resolution | Restore defaults, lower internal resolution, test an available renderer, and consult the requirements and compatibility notes. A stronger GPU is not a universal fix for CPU-limited games. |
| Game boots but controller does nothing | Input source or button mapping | Confirm the controller works in the operating system, remap it in PCSX2, and temporarily test with a keyboard. |
Flatpak installations can encounter file-access sandbox issues that do not occur with AppImage; the official running guide notes this caveat. If a problem appears only in one branch, reproduce it on a current official build before considering a Stable-versus-Nightly switch.
ISO versus playing a physical disc
PCSX2 can read a disc through System → Start Disc, but this requires a working optical drive and can introduce drive-read or speed variables. The FAQ recommends disc images for better repeat access and, in some cases, better results. An ISO also avoids repeated disc insertion and makes library management easier.

Where saves go
Saving in the game does not alter the ISO. PCSX2 stores saves on virtual memory cards, separately from the image. Back up memory-card files before major updates or configuration changes, and do not delete or overwrite them while diagnosing an ISO problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate BIOS for every ISO?
No. PCSX2 requires a compatible PS2 BIOS, but an individual ISO does not normally require its own BIOS. BIOS region can be tested as a troubleshooting variable rather than treated as a universal rule.
Can I launch an ISO without owning the original game?
Use game images and BIOS dumps only when you have the legal rights to them. PCSX2 does not supply copyrighted games or BIOS files.
