Steam Deck HQ reports regular dips below 30 FPS even at the lowest settings and does not recommend the experience on its tested build. Steam’s store listing calls the game “Fully optimized for handheld play,” making the gap between that positioning and the measured Deck result worth noting.
Does Gears of War: E-Day run on Steam Deck?
Yes: Steam Deck HQ reports that the game boots on the Deck. But in its October 2026 review, the outlet observed regular drops below 30 FPS even at the lowest settings and judged the experience not viable or recommended on the tested build. That is a reviewer’s result for its tested PC build and conditions, not a guarantee for every Deck, game update, or configuration.
Steam’s listing describes E-Day as “Fully optimized for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices.” That is the store’s handheld positioning; it does not state a tested resolution, graphics preset, frame rate, or battery life. The phrase should not be read as a measured performance promise. Steam store listing; Steam Deck HQ review.
What the handheld benchmarks establish—and what they don’t
Steam Deck
The available Deck finding is straightforward: E-Day starts, but Steam Deck HQ reports frequent sub-30-FPS performance at minimum settings. Its review does not support recommending the game on Deck for players seeking a consistently smooth experience. The reported result is an individual review observation, not a population-wide measurement.

Xbox Ally X and Xbox Ally
Steam includes both devices in its handheld-optimized wording, but the cited material provides no measured results for either model. Without testing on the same game build and comparable settings, it is not possible to say that either is a proven fix for the Deck’s performance shortfall.
What a useful comparison would require
A fair handheld comparison would report the game build, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, average frame rate, 1% lows, power or TDP setting, battery draw or runtime, and visual quality. The available Deck finding does not provide a controlled comparison across those axes.

Why the PC requirements don’t guarantee good Deck performance
Steam’s published minimum requirements are Windows PC specifications, not a Steam Deck performance certification. The listing calls for Windows 10 64-bit, a Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel Core i7-6850K, or Intel Core i5-10400-class processor, 12 GB of memory, DirectX 12, a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU, and 115 GB of available SSD space. The recommended tier raises memory to 16 GB, lists a Ryzen 5 5600- or Intel Core i5-11600K-class CPU, and specifies stronger graphics hardware. Steam’s requirements.
The requirement for hardware ray tracing is especially important: the listing says a hardware ray-tracing-capable graphics card is required. Those desktop-oriented requirements do not establish how the game performs on Deck, and meeting or interpreting a PC tier should not be treated as proof of a playable handheld frame rate.

For additional context, PC Gamer’s October 1, 2026 summary of the published PC tiers describes minimum-target performance as 1080p at 60 FPS using an upscaler, recommended as 1440p at 60-plus FPS, and Ultra as 4K at 60-plus FPS using DLSS, FSR, TSR, or XeSS. Those are PC Gamer’s summaries of PC targets, not Deck benchmarks. PC Gamer’s requirements summary.

Tom’s Hardware tested CPU scaling on desktop systems at 1080p with an RTX 5090, a setup intended to expose processor differences. It described the game’s built-in benchmark as a useful approximation, while noting that its sweeping camera runs slightly slower than the sampled in-game scenes because it draws more of the scene. These results and that benchmark caveat apply to Tom’s desktop testing; they do not validate the Steam Deck review’s settings or frame rate. Tom’s Hardware benchmark analysis.

- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Could a patch improve Steam Deck performance?
It could, but the available result is a launch-period snapshot rather than a promise about future builds. Xbox Wire reported that, after the July multiplayer beta, the studio continued work to improve PC stability and performance across a wide range of hardware configurations. That establishes ongoing PC performance work at the time; it does not establish that a later update will resolve the Deck’s frame-rate problem. Xbox Wire’s September 17, 2026 announcement.
Xbox Wire said early access began October 1, 2026, with worldwide launch scheduled for October 6. As builds and patches change, a decision made from October 2026 testing should be checked against reviews or performance reports for the version a player intends to use.

Should you play E-Day on Steam Deck?
If steady performance is your priority, the current evidence points to waiting for further Deck-specific testing or playing on a system with confirmed performance instead. Steam Deck HQ’s tested build regularly fell below 30 FPS even at minimum settings, while the store’s handheld-optimized label does not include a frame-rate target. The cited material does not establish a better-performing alternative handheld, so the Xbox Ally models cannot be recommended as a verified workaround on this evidence.
