Look for the small orange recharge light next to the power light: Nintendo identifies it as the sign that a Nintendo 3DS-family system is charging. It normally turns off when charging is complete. The blue or red power light shows the system’s power state, not whether charging is active.
Which light shows that a 3DS is charging?
The orange recharge LED beside the power LED is the charging indicator. It should illuminate while the console is charging and turn off when charging is complete, whether power reaches the console through its adapter connector or a charging cradle. See Nintendo’s charging instructions.
Do not mistake the separate notification LED for the recharge LED: an orange notification can indicate an online-friend alert, not charging. The notification light is a different indicator; the charging light is beside the power LED. Nintendo notes that the power LED’s position differs slightly on the 2DS. See its notification LED guide and power LED overview.
| Indicator | What it means |
|---|---|
| Orange recharge LED on | The system is charging. |
| Orange recharge LED off after charging | Charging is complete. |
| Solid blue power LED | The system has power and the battery is sufficiently charged; blue alone does not confirm active charging. |
| Pulsing blue power LED | The system is in sleep mode. |
| Solid red power LED | The battery is low. |
| Flashing red power LED | The battery is very low. |
The power LED describes the system’s power state; the orange recharge LED indicates charging activity. A light is a useful visual check, but it cannot by itself establish the battery’s long-term health.

How to confirm charging
With the AC adapter plugged into the console
- Insert the adapter’s DC plug straight into the AC adapter connector on the back of the system.
- Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
- Check that the console’s orange recharge LED comes on.
- Leave the system connected until the orange LED turns off.
With a charging cradle
- Connect the AC adapter to the cradle. The cradle needs the adapter; it is not a power source by itself.
- Seat the system correctly in the cradle.
- Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
- Check the console’s orange recharge LED. That light—not the cradle alone—is the visual confirmation.
These steps apply to the Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL. Exterior design and light placement can vary by model.
How long does it take to charge?
Nintendo gives an approximate full-charge time of 3½ hours; the actual time varies with the starting charge, battery age and other conditions. Charging takes longer while you use the system, so charging with it powered off is the faster normal option. The Nintendo 3DS operations manual gives the approximate recharge time, and Nintendo’s power and charging guidance notes that use can extend charging.

If the battery is completely depleted, the system may need up to 15 minutes of charging before it can turn on. Do not treat failure to start immediately as proof that charging has failed. For completion, trust the orange LED turning off rather than a timer.
What to do if the orange light does not come on
No orange light means charging has not been visually confirmed. Work through these checks without forcing the plug or opening the console:

- Test the outlet. Connect the adapter to a known-working wall outlet.
- Reseat the connections. Disconnect the adapter from both the console and the outlet, then reconnect it firmly.
- Reset the adapter. Leave it unplugged at both ends for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it and check again. This is Nintendo’s recommended reset step for charge problems; see its charging troubleshooting guidance.
- Inspect the power equipment and port. Look for a frayed or twisted cable, broken connector, loose plug or visible damage to the console’s charging port. Stop using damaged equipment. Do not probe the port with metal or hold a loose plug at an angle.
- Use a compatible, officially licensed adapter. Nintendo identifies WAP-002 as the 3DS-family AC adapter model. Check the model and regional compatibility before trying another adapter; avoid assuming a generic USB cable or phone charger is suitable. See Nintendo’s adapter and accessory information.
- Compare with another compatible adapter, if available. If the console charges with a second licensed adapter, the original adapter is a likely cause. If it does not, the fault may be elsewhere.
- Compare direct charging with a cradle, if you own one. If the system charges in the cradle but not through its own connector, the console’s port or direct-charging path may be at fault. Nintendo’s cradle troubleshooting guidance explains how to compare charging methods.
These comparisons help narrow the problem; they do not prove a particular part has failed. If possible, Nintendo also recommends checking the adapter with another 3DS-family system. Its guides cover testing a second adapter and testing another system.
If the light comes on briefly, or the system will not start
The orange light turns off after charging
This is normal when the battery is full. An orange light going out is not, by itself, evidence of a bad charger.

The light flickers or goes out immediately
A loose connection, adapter, port, cradle or battery problem could be involved, but a brief light does not prove the battery has failed. Nintendo notes that the charge light can flicker and go out in some situations; if the console does not gain or retain charge, continue with the connection and accessory checks above. See Nintendo’s other power-problem guidance.
The orange light is on, but the system will not turn on
Allow a fully depleted system up to 15 minutes on charge before trying to start it. If it still will not start after charging, the cause may be a separate power, display, sleep-mode or hardware issue rather than an absence of charging.

If the 3DS charges but the battery drains quickly
A working orange light indicates charging activity; it does not show how much charge the battery can retain. Nintendo’s estimates are roughly 3–5 hours for Nintendo 3DS software and 5–8 hours for Nintendo DS software. Actual runtime varies with factors such as screen brightness and use, so these figures are not guarantees. If the system consistently runs for much less time, battery age or a defect is possible, but check the adapter, cradle and port before concluding the battery is the only issue. Nintendo’s power guidance provides the runtime estimates, and its accessory guidance covers physical checks.
When to seek service
If the system still will not charge after testing a known-working outlet, resetting the adapter, checking for visible damage and comparing compatible charging equipment, the console or its charging path may need diagnosis. Service availability depends on model and region. Nintendo of America’s cited support page lists the New Nintendo 2DS XL as available for service and says most other listed 3DS-family models are no longer serviced; check current local guidance before arranging repair.
