Best Arcade Controllers for PC Gaming: Sticks, Leverless Picks, and How to Choose

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right arcade controller for PC depends on what you play and how you want to move: a traditional joystick-and-button stick is the easiest place to start for classic arcade games, while a leverless controller replaces the stick with directional buttons and suits players who prefer keyboard-like inputs. For a full-size traditional option, the Mayflash F500 Elite is a strong all-round pick; the 8BitDo Arcade Stick is the better fit if wireless couch play matters, and the Mayflash F500 Flat Elite is a leverless option to consider if its layout and rules fit your needs.

“PC compatible” does not mean every game will recognize a controller automatically. Check the controller’s input mode, the game’s support, and any platform-specific requirements before buying.

Quick picks: which arcade controller fits your PC setup?

Controller Best for Layout and connection Main advantage Main trade-off
Mayflash F500 Elite First full-size PC fight stick or a modding-friendly traditional stick Joystick and buttons; wired USB Full-size arcade format and documented firmware support Firmware and cross-platform setup can require attention; manufacturer latency claims are not independent measurements
8BitDo Arcade Stick Wireless couch gaming and retro play Joystick and buttons; wired USB, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth support for compatible devices Wireless convenience, profiles, and customization software Its Windows and Switch focus may not suit buyers seeking native PS5 or Xbox support
Mayflash F700 Elite Players who want wired and wireless options across more than one platform Joystick and buttons; wired USB, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth, with platform support dependent on mode and firmware Flexible connection options More modes and firmware steps make setup more involved
Mayflash F500 Flat Elite Players who want a leverless layout from an arcade-stick manufacturer All-button directional layout; wired Remapping functions documented by Mayflash Requires a different hand position; macro use may be restricted at events
Hori Fighting Stick Alpha, Qanba Drone 2 or Titan, Victrix Pro FS or Pro KO Buyers comparing established or premium fight-stick families Traditional sticks or, for Victrix Pro KO, a leverless option; exact editions vary Different sizes, construction, and platform editions to choose from Verify the precise model, PC support, current availability, and platform version

No current price is stated here because reliable model-specific prices were not established. Check the exact edition and seller before ordering, and include the cost of any adapter or optional replacement parts in your budget.

Best overall traditional stick: Mayflash F500 Elite

The F500 Elite is a sensible shortlist choice for a PC player who wants the familiar arcade arrangement: a physical joystick and large action buttons in a full-size case. It is also a candidate for players who may replace parts later. Mayflash publishes Windows firmware instructions and release notes for functions including L3/R3 support; use the support page for the exact model and current files: Mayflash Support.

Confirm whether the unit is an F500 Elite, F500 V2, or another revision before following instructions or downloading firmware. Their procedures and files should not be assumed interchangeable. For the Elite, Mayflash’s documented update process uses a Windows PC, a direct USB connection, and holding Start and Select while connecting the stick. See the F500 Elite firmware procedure and check the manufacturer’s current support notes before proceeding.

Mayflash has published firmware claims of 1 ms or 1–2 ms input lag for particular F500 Elite revisions. Those are manufacturer claims, not an independently measured comparison with other sticks; the figures and their conditions should not be treated as a guarantee of end-to-end game responsiveness. Mayflash’s latency claim for one firmware revision

Choose another option if wireless play is essential or you want the simplest possible setup without firmware or platform-mode decisions. Console compatibility can depend on a particular adapter or connected controller, so a PC-focused buyer should not assume console support is native.

Best wireless traditional stick: 8BitDo Arcade Stick

The 8BitDo Arcade Stick is a better match for couch play, living-room PCs, and retro gaming where a cable across the room is inconvenient. Its official product page describes Windows and Nintendo Switch support, wired and wireless operation, profiles, and customization through 8BitDo software: 8BitDo Arcade Stick. The company also provides Windows connection details in its FAQ.

For competitive PC play, use wired USB as the straightforward default. Wireless is a convenience, not a promise of zero latency: behavior depends on the connection mode, receiver or pairing, firmware, distance, and interference. If you only play at a desk over USB, the wireless feature may not justify paying extra over a simpler wired stick.

Check the exact listing and included accessories, and do not infer PS5 or Xbox support from Windows and Switch compatibility. Support varies by platform and may involve a different model or adapter.

Best for multiple connection options: Mayflash F700 Elite

The F700 Elite is worth considering if you want a traditional stick with wired USB, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth options rather than a PC-only desk controller. Mayflash documents Switch 2 compatibility over wired USB, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth after firmware version 1.02.15; that specific note is not proof of identical support across every platform or mode. Mayflash F700 Elite firmware and compatibility notes

Wireless options add flexibility but also add things to check: platform mode, firmware, and receiver pairing. Mayflash says the stick and 2.4 GHz receiver have separate firmware attention, so update both when its instructions call for it. Verify the exact F700 Elite mode and platform requirements rather than relying on a generic claim that the controller “works everywhere.”

Best leverless route: Mayflash F500 Flat Elite or a current Haute42 model

A leverless controller replaces the joystick with directional buttons. It can suit players who prefer digital, keyboard-like movement, but it is a different technique to learn—not an automatic shortcut or competitive advantage. Mayflash documents remapping and macro-related functions for the F500 Flat Elite; consult the relevant F500 Flat Elite support notes for the current firmware and behavior.

Before choosing a leverless controller, check the rules of the particular game, tournament, or online event. Simultaneous directional inputs may be handled differently by games and event rules, and macro functions may be prohibited in competition. For Haute42, model names and availability can change; confirm the current model’s PC mode, firmware, layout, seller warranty, and support terms before purchase. Do not rely on a similarly named listing to establish those details.

Premium and established alternatives

Hori, Qanba, and Victrix offer alternatives for buyers comparing component feel, case size, platform editions, or premium construction. Broad fight-stick coverage highlights these families, but the exact edition matters more than the brand name for PC compatibility.

Family Why consider it What to verify
Hori Fighting Stick Alpha A recognized traditional design with Hori Hayabusa components and customization-oriented construction, as noted in PCGamesN’s fight-stick comparison Choose the edition for your platform and confirm its Windows support; it is a wired, desk-or-lap style rather than a wireless travel stick
Qanba Drone 2 A compact traditional-stick option identified in comparison coverage Check the exact product name and edition, current stock, and official PC support
Qanba Titan A larger alternative for buyers who prefer a broader playing surface; PCGamesN distinguishes it from the compact Drone 2 Confirm dimensions, platform version, and compatibility in the official listing: Qanba
Victrix Pro FS A premium traditional-stick family Check platform-specific compatibility and price on the Victrix Pro site; premium construction does not guarantee a preferred feel
Victrix Pro KO A premium leverless alternative within the Victrix range Confirm the exact model, layout, platform support, and current listing on the Victrix Pro site

These are comparison candidates, not a universal ranking. Current prices, availability, and precise compatibility were not established for every model. A general PC-controller roundup may include standard gamepads alongside specialist controllers; a conventional gamepad can be a better choice for many non-arcade games, but it is not a substitute for the arcade layout a fight-stick buyer is seeking. Traditional stick or leverless: which layout suits your games?

Game or preference Traditional joystick stick Leverless controller
2D fighting games Classic movement feel; a good starting point if you want a physical lever Viable for players who prefer directional buttons and are willing to learn their placement
3D fighters such as Tekken Popular traditional option; lever precision remains a personal skill Can work well, but is not an automatic competitive advantage
Mortal Kombat-style games Some players find the block-button layout and movement less natural on a stick Directional buttons may appeal to keyboard-oriented players; test the layout if possible
Shoot-’em-ups Usually the most intuitive match for arcade-style joystick movement Possible, but less like the controls of many original cabinets
Beat-’em-ups and classic arcade titles Closest to the joystick-based cabinet experience Works if you prefer buttons, though it may feel unlike the original control scheme
Non-arcade PC games Specialist choice; many games expect an analog stick or gamepad Also specialist; a standard gamepad is often more suitable

For retro emulation, a physical stick is not always enough: some older arcade games use two-way or four-way movement. An eight-way setup may produce unintended diagonals, so use per-game remapping or a supported restrictor configuration where appropriate. Arcade-controller terminology and gate context

How to choose the right arcade controller

  1. Start with the games. Choose a traditional stick for the closest match to joystick-era arcade games and a leverless model if you prefer directional buttons. For general PC gaming, consider whether a regular gamepad fits better.
  2. Decide how you will connect. Wired USB is the simplest PC baseline. Choose wireless for couch use, and confirm which modes the exact model supports.
  3. Check input mode and compatibility. XInput is generally easiest for modern Windows games; DirectInput can be useful for older software and emulators but may require manual mapping. Steam Input can remap many devices, but behavior varies by game.
  4. Choose a comfortable size. Larger cases tend to be more stable on a lap and provide more room, while compact sticks are easier to carry but can feel cramped in long sessions. Consider button spacing, wrist position, and where the cable goes.
  5. Think about parts and modding. If you may replace the lever, buttons, gate, or artwork, confirm standard mounting, internal access, and part compatibility rather than relying only on a brand name.
  6. Check platform edition and total cost. PC-only players generally do not need a console adapter. If you also play on consoles, verify whether support is native, wired-only, mode-dependent, or adapter-based; add any necessary accessories to the cost.
  7. Consider event requirements. Tournament rules can govern macros and simultaneous inputs. Confirm the policy for your specific game and event before relying on a feature.

Buyer profiles

  • First fight stick: Compare the Mayflash F500 Elite for a full-size wired stick with the 8BitDo Arcade Stick if wireless convenience matters.
  • Wireless couch player: Start with the 8BitDo Arcade Stick; choose the F700 Elite if its additional modes and platform flexibility are worth the setup complexity.
  • Leverless beginner: Consider the F500 Flat Elite or a current Haute42 model after checking layout, firmware, and event rules.
  • Competitive PC player: Choose a wired controller in the layout you can use comfortably, and verify the game and event’s input policy.
  • Retro enthusiast: Favor a traditional stick and ensure the emulator can save per-game mappings; some games may need four-way or two-way direction handling.
  • Frequent traveler: A compact traditional stick or leverless controller saves space, with a trade-off in lap stability and button room.
  • Modder: Prioritize accessible internals, replaceable parts, standard mounting, artwork options, and clear documentation.

What to look for in the controls and case

Joystick and gate

Lever feel depends on more than the logo on the part: gate shape, spring tension, actuation distance, shaft, and ball-top or bat-top shape all affect the experience. Square gates are common; octagonal and circular options are alternatives where the controller supports them. A player accustomed to a gamepad or keyboard may initially find any arcade lever unfamiliar. Sanwa, Seimitsu, Hori, Korean, and proprietary parts each have different characteristics; none is universally best, and “Sanwa-equipped” does not establish the quality of the case, layout, firmware, or warranty.

Buttons and case

Action buttons are commonly 30 mm, with auxiliary buttons often 24 mm, but confirm the exact case’s mounting and parts before buying replacements. Switch feel, travel, activation force, noise, and replaceability matter. The case determines lap comfort, stability, wrist position, portability, cable storage, and how easily you can open it or change artwork. A smaller or thinner controller can travel well yet feel less stable during long sessions.

Extra controls

Check whether the model includes the menu and auxiliary controls your games need, such as Start, Select/View, Home, Share, or L3/R3 equivalents. Some sticks add tournament locks, headset or audio controls, profiles, turbo, or remapping. Macros can be useful for accessibility or casual play, but competition rules may prohibit them.

PC compatibility, input lag, and connection basics

Windows detecting a controller does not guarantee that every game will use it. A device may appear over USB HID while a game expects XInput, or a DirectInput device may need manual assignment. Steam Input can bridge some gaps but is not a universal fix. Console pass-through on a Mayflash stick may rely on an attached controller or adapter; that is separate from direct PC USB use.

Input responsiveness is a whole path: controller, connection, operating system, game, display, and—in online play—network conditions. Wired USB removes battery, pairing, and radio-interference variables, which is why it is the uncomplicated default for competitive play. Wireless convenience depends on mode, receiver, firmware, distance, and local interference. Do not compare manufacturer latency figures as if they were independent tests performed under the same method.

Set up an arcade controller on Windows

  1. Connect by USB first. Use a direct PC port while establishing that the controller works; add wireless only after wired input is confirmed.
  2. Select the PC mode. If the controller has a mode switch, choose its PC, XInput, or DirectInput setting based on the game and device instructions.
  3. Verify buttons in Windows. Open the Windows game-controller settings or controller panel available in your Windows version and confirm each direction and button registers. Menu labels can differ across Windows releases.
  4. Check the game’s own controls. Select the controller in the game and bind buttons if it does not detect the layout automatically.
  5. Configure Steam or an emulator if needed. Try Steam Input for a Steam game, or map controls in the emulator and save a profile for that emulator or game.
  6. Update firmware only when necessary. Get the updater for the exact model and revision from the manufacturer. For Mayflash, follow its current support instructions; do not interrupt power during an update.

F500 Elite firmware update

Mayflash’s documented procedure is for the F500 Elite and uses a Windows PC. Download the appropriate updater from the official F500 Elite support instructions, run it, hold Start and Select while connecting the stick directly to the PC, release them after detection, then choose Update. Keep the stick connected until the updater reports completion. If it is not detected, confirm the exact model, avoid a USB hub, and repeat the direct-connection procedure. The manufacturer’s support page is the authority for current files and revisions.

Fix common PC arcade-controller problems

Windows sees the stick, but the game does not

  • Check whether the controller is in the wrong mode; try XInput or DirectInput as appropriate.
  • Test the controls in Windows before changing the game settings.
  • Configure or disable Steam Input for that specific game if it is overriding the native mapping.
  • Bind controls manually if the title supports it, and avoid running multiple remapping tools at once.

Buttons are missing or duplicated

  • Reset the game’s controller profile and bind each input again.
  • Check the controller’s PC or console mode and verify inputs in Windows.
  • Consult the manufacturer’s notes for the exact firmware revision if the behavior persists.

Wireless pairing fails

  • Use the supplied receiver where applicable, connect it directly to the PC, and confirm the controller is charged.
  • Check that you have not confused Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz pairing modes.
  • For models with separately updated receivers, update the stick and receiver as instructed; Mayflash documents this requirement for the F700 Elite.

Directions feel wrong or retro games register unwanted diagonals

  • Check the gate and lever configuration, and allow time to adapt if you are moving from a gamepad or keyboard.
  • For a two-way or four-way game, use per-game remapping or a compatible gate configuration if available.
  • Do not assume a different brand of lever will solve a preference issue; spring, gate, and input habits all affect feel.
