The fix depends on which Call of Duty: Modern Warfare you own, which mode you are trying to play, and whether Player 2 can join at all. For Modern Warfare (2019), start in Multiplayer: assign the second controller to a different console profile, sign Player 2 into a separate Activision account if prompted, and test a Private or Local Multiplayer match before trying public matchmaking. Split-screen is not available in every mode, and a missing prompt is not necessarily a fault with your controller.
First, identify which Modern Warfare you mean
“COD Modern Warfare” can refer to several separate games. Their menus, supported modes, and installation systems differ, so do not apply instructions for one title to another.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019): the reboot starring Captain Price, commonly launched through the Call of Duty application.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (2016): a remaster of the original 2007 game.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022): the 2022 sequel.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023): the 2023 sequel.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011): the older game, with different menus and split-screen behavior.
The steps below focus mainly on Modern Warfare (2019), the most common meaning of this search. Activision’s Modern Warfare Remastered FAQ separately confirms two-player split-screen in online Multiplayer. It also says Local-mode progression does not carry over to online progression.
Use a supported mode as your first test
In Modern Warfare (2019), split-screen is associated with Multiplayer, not every game mode. Campaign, Warzone, and some co-op activities or playlists may not expose a second-player option. If the prompt is absent in one mode, test a basic Private Match or Local Multiplayer match before changing the installation.

GameRevolution’s Modern Warfare split-screen guide describes the Multiplayer entry path and notes that some co-op areas do not support split-screen. A successful Private or Local match is a useful diagnostic: it suggests the controller setup works, so focus next on the online service, playlist, or account restrictions.
Connect Player 2 from the main menu
Close the game fully rather than returning to it from suspend or Quick Resume. Reopen it, wait for the game and account connection steps to finish, then add Player 2 before entering a match. The second controller should be assigned to a different console profile; a guest or a second controller on the same profile may not satisfy the account requirements.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
- Turn on both controllers and assign Controller 1 to Player 1’s PlayStation profile.
- Assign Controller 2 to a different local PlayStation profile.
- Launch the game using Player 1 and wait at the opening or main menu.
- Press X on Controller 2 when the split-screen join prompt appears.
- If requested, sign Player 2 into a separate Activision account and complete any account-linking or permission steps.
- Enter Multiplayer and try a Private or Local match first.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Turn on both controllers and assign each to a different Xbox profile.
- Launch the game using Player 1 and wait at the opening or main menu.
- Press A on Controller 2 when the join prompt appears.
- If requested, sign Player 2 into a separate Activision account and complete any account-linking or permission steps.
- Enter Multiplayer and test a Private or Local match before public matchmaking.
The X/A controls and separate Activision-account requirement are described in GameRevolution’s guide. Requirements can vary by title and platform. If the prompt flashes and disappears, back out to the opening menu and try joining again before entering a lobby; this is a practical workaround, not a guaranteed fix.
Use the symptom to narrow down the cause

Check Multiplayer content and updates
Call of Duty titles can install content in components. The base application may be present while a Multiplayer pack or required data pack is missing, unavailable, or corrupted. Look in the game’s Manage Game Content, Add-ons, Installed Content, Game Installs, or Data Packs area; the label depends on the title and platform. Install the Multiplayer components the game identifies as required, then restart the game.

Install pending game and console updates before deleting files. Let any copying, installation, or update process finish, then restart the game after changing installed content. Activision’s Modern Warfare III launch patch notes document fixes involving parties with a split-screen player and unavailable selective-install content. Those notes show that updates and incomplete content can matter in that title; they do not establish that a particular update fixes Modern Warfare (2019).
Separate a local setup problem from an online problem
If a Private or Local match fails too, focus first on the controller, profiles, account setup, installed content, or game files. If local play works and only online matchmaking fails, check whether both players can access online Multiplayer, whether the chosen playlist accepts split-screen, and whether there is a service or connection issue.

Activision’s Modern Warfare connection guidance recommends checking server status and platform connectivity for connection problems, and suggests wired Ethernet for more reliable online play. Check the appropriate online multiplayer entitlement for your console and region if the platform requires one; local play and online Multiplayer should not be assumed to have identical requirements.

- Quit the game completely.
- Shut down the console fully and restart it. If you choose to disconnect power, follow the platform’s normal shutdown guidance.
- Reconnect both controllers and confirm that each is assigned to the intended profile.
- Launch the game, join Player 2 from the opening menu, and test Private or Local Multiplayer.
- If the problem persists, reinstall the Multiplayer component or affected data pack before considering a full game reinstall.
- On Steam, use Verify integrity of installed files. On Battle.net, use Scan and Repair. In the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, use the available repair option where offered.
- Reinstall the full game only if component repair fails. Confirm the correct account is in use and take care not to delete saved data unintentionally.
Third-party troubleshooting guides, including The Windows Club and PC Error Fix, suggest file verification, content-pack repair, and reinstalling as possible remedies for damaged or missing files. These are escalation steps, not guaranteed fixes: they cannot make an unsupported mode compatible or resolve a server outage or game-side regression.

If it still fails, stop repeating reinstalls
Record the exact game edition, platform, game version, mode, what happens when Player 2 tries to join, and any error message. Test each account independently if possible, and note whether a Private or Local match works. Check the official support or patch-note pages for that specific title and contact Activision Modern Warfare Support with those details.
Some players have reported update-related disruption to Modern Warfare (2019) split-screen on particular console builds. Those reports are anecdotal, not an official confirmation of permanent or universal removal: see the Microsoft Community discussion and community discussion on Reddit. If the feature fails across supported modes after a clean content check, repeated full reinstalls are unlikely to help when the cause is a game-side issue. A console setting cannot restore functionality that the game itself no longer exposes.
Does the same advice apply to other Modern Warfare games?
No. Use the title-specific support information where available. For Modern Warfare Remastered, Activision’s gameplay FAQ confirms two-player split-screen online Multiplayer and distinguishes Local-mode progression from online progression. Modern Warfare III has its own party and installation history in its launch patch notes; do not treat those fixes as a universal solution for the 2019 game. The troubleshooting steps here are aimed at console play. Do not assume the native PC release offers the same couch split-screen setup as console, or treat unofficial tools as Activision-supported features.
