1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo connect a DualSense to a Windows PC, put the controller into pairing mode by holding Create + PS until its light bar flashes, then add it from Windows Bluetooth settings. Sony lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 64-bit as compatible, but wireless pairing does not guarantee that every game or DualSense feature will work. Sony’s pairing and compatibility guidance explains the controller-specific requirements.
What you need before pairing
- A DualSense or DualSense Edge controller with charge.
- A Windows PC with working Bluetooth. If it has no Bluetooth hardware, a commercially available USB Bluetooth adapter can add it; Sony does not require a special PlayStation adapter. Microsoft’s Windows pairing guide covers Bluetooth adapters.
- A compatible game or launcher. Pairing with Windows and getting a particular game to recognize the controller are separate steps.
- An optional USB-C data cable for firmware updates, wired play, and troubleshooting. A charge-only cable will not serve those purposes.
On Windows 11, Bluetooth settings are under Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices. If the Bluetooth switch is missing, the PC may lack Bluetooth hardware or its driver may be missing; check Device Manager and the PC or motherboard specifications before buying an adapter. Microsoft’s Bluetooth settings guidance describes the setting.
Put the DualSense into pairing mode
- Make sure the controller is off. If its player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until it turns off.
- Disconnect any USB cable from the controller.
- Hold the Create button, then hold the PS button while continuing to hold Create.
- Release the buttons when the light bar starts flashing. The controller is now discoverable for pairing.
Sony’s instructions specify that the controller should be disconnected from USB and that the flashing light bar indicates pairing mode: DualSense Bluetooth pairing.
Pair it with Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Devices or Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
- When the controller appears, select it. Windows may list it as Wireless Controller, not “DualSense.”
- Select Done if Windows shows a completion prompt. Check the Bluetooth device list for a connected status.
Keep the controller in pairing mode while you search. Microsoft’s current pairing steps are at Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Pair it with Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Select the controller when it appears, then follow any confirmation prompt.
Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit as compatible with the DualSense, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Controller compatibility and ongoing Windows security support are different things. See Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth settings information and Sony’s controller compatibility page.
Check that games recognize the controller
A Windows “connected” status confirms Bluetooth pairing; it does not confirm that a game supports the DualSense. Game support can be native, handled through Windows input support, or provided by a compatibility layer. Some games expect Xbox-style XInput input, so controller prompts or behavior may differ from PlayStation versions.

Steam games
- Pair the controller with Windows before opening the game.
- Open Steam’s controller settings and check that Steam detects the controller.
- For a game with native DualSense support, test that support first. If the game does not respond correctly, try Steam Input for that game; if native support is being disrupted, try turning Steam Input off for it.
- After changing controller settings, restart the game and test again.
Steam Input can translate controller input for games that do not handle a PlayStation controller as expected, but support and button prompts vary by game. Sony advises checking Steam or the game publisher for title-specific compatibility: Sony’s PC controller information.
Non-Steam games
A non-Steam game may support DualSense input directly, use Windows controller input, or expect XInput. Check the game publisher’s documentation first. If it does not recognize the controller, Steam Input or an optional remapping utility may help, but neither is required for basic Bluetooth pairing. Avoid running multiple remapping or virtual-controller tools together until you know which one the game needs; overlapping tools can create duplicate or conflicting input. DSX is one optional utility distributed through Steam: DSX on Steam.

Which DualSense features work over Bluetooth?
Basic button and stick input works in compatible games, but the connection method affects some features. Sony says PC haptic feedback requires USB when a game supports it, and the controller’s headset jack requires a wired connection on PC. Adaptive-trigger support depends on the game and its implementation; do not assume it works wirelessly in every title.
| Feature | Bluetooth on PC | USB on PC | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buttons and sticks | Generally available | Generally available | The game must recognize the controller. |
| Adaptive triggers | Game- and implementation-dependent | Game- and implementation-dependent | Support varies by title; Sony does not promise universal support. |
| Haptic feedback | Do not assume it is available | Available when supported by the game | Sony says PC haptics require USB when supported. |
| Headset jack on the controller | Not supported over Bluetooth on PC | Supported with a wired PC connection | Connect headphones to the PC instead if playing wirelessly. |
| Firmware updates | Not the update method | Use USB | Update with PlayStation Accessories on Windows. |
These PC limitations and qualifications are documented by Sony’s DualSense connection guide.

- Check for a controller software update and follow the on-screen instructions while the controller remains connected.
- Disconnect the cable, put the controller back into pairing mode, and try Bluetooth again.
This is a useful step when pairing or connection problems persist; it does not guarantee that a specific game supports the controller.

The controller does not appear in the Bluetooth list
- Turn the controller off, unplug USB, and repeat the Create + PS pairing sequence until the light bar flashes.
- Move the controller close to the PC and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- On Windows 11, check Bluetooth device discovery settings; Microsoft suggests using Advanced discovery if a device is not visible.
- Remove an old Wireless Controller entry from Windows Bluetooth settings, then pair again.
- Restart Bluetooth or Windows. If Bluetooth settings are missing, check Device Manager and update or reinstall the Bluetooth adapter driver.

Windows says connected, but the game gets no input
- Confirm the game supports a PlayStation controller and check whether it expects XInput.
- Test in Steam or another controller-aware application to separate a game issue from a pairing issue.
- For a Steam game, try Steam Input on or off for that game, depending on whether native support is available.
- Close other controller-remapping software and restart the game after changing settings.
The controller disconnects during play
- Charge the controller and reduce distance or obstacles between it and the PC.
- Check for Bluetooth driver updates and nearby wireless interference.
- If using a USB Bluetooth adapter, reposition it away from USB 3.0 devices or ports; Microsoft notes that some unshielded USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth.
- Try a different USB port or adapter position. A higher Bluetooth version number alone does not guarantee better range or fewer dropouts.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting page covers potential USB interference and other Bluetooth connection faults: Bluetooth troubleshooting.
Haptics, triggers, or headphones do not work
First check whether the game supports the feature. For PC haptics that the game supports, connect by USB. The controller’s headset jack requires a wired PC connection; for wireless play, connect headphones to the PC. Missing haptics or audio through the controller jack does not by itself mean Bluetooth pairing failed.
Switch back to a PS5
For the standard reconnection method, connect the controller to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable and press PS. Once it reconnects to the console, remove the cable. Sony has also described multi-device pairing for DualSense and DualSense Edge, but availability depends on controller model and firmware; do not assume every controller has the feature. See Sony’s multi-device pairing announcement and the standard reconnection instructions.
Bluetooth or USB: which should you use?
| Use Bluetooth when… | Use USB when… |
|---|---|
| You want untethered play and your PC has stable Bluetooth. | You are updating controller firmware. |
| The game needs ordinary button and stick input and recognizes the controller. | You want PC haptic feedback in a supported game or need the controller headset jack. |
| You play at a distance from the PC and prefer fewer cables. | You want to remove Bluetooth interference and pairing as variables while troubleshooting. |
A Bluetooth adapter solves missing or unreliable PC Bluetooth; it cannot fix a game that does not support the controller. For the simplest wireless setup, use built-in Bluetooth if it is reliable, or a reputable adapter with current Windows drivers if it is not.
