Best Motherboards for RTX 4090 Gamers and PC Enthusiasts

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need a special motherboard for an RTX 4090. NVIDIA specifies the card for PCI Express Gen 4, so a motherboard with a CPU-connected PCIe 4.0 x16 slot is already a suitable match; PCIe 5.0 is optional. Choose the board around your processor, storage and expansion plans, case clearance, and required connectivity—not in the expectation that a more expensive board will raise gaming frame rates.

For a new AMD enthusiast build, start with an AM5 X870E or X870 board if you will use its USB4, PCIe 5.0 storage, or other expansion features. If you already have a compatible Intel LGA1700 processor, a Z790 board such as the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero can make sense when its premium I/O is useful and the price is right. For a single-GPU gaming PC, a capable mainstream board is often the better value.

Quick recommendations

Board or category Platform Best suited to RTX 4090 connection Storage and networking highlights Main trade-off
Current X870E or X870 board AMD AM5 New Ryzen builds that need current-platform features PCIe 5.0 graphics support; the RTX 4090 itself is PCIe Gen 4 AMD lists PCIe 5.0 NVMe support and USB4 for X870E and X870; check the individual board for slot count and networking May cost more than a one-GPU gaming build needs
MSI MPG X670E Carbon WiFi AMD AM5 Discounted enthusiast builds with expansion needs PCIe 5.0 x16; documented x16/x0 or x8/x8 graphics configurations PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 support, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5 Gb Ethernet, six SATA 6 Gb/s ports Earlier AM5 chipset generation; lane sharing and CPU support depend on configuration and BIOS
Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master AMD AM5 Storage-heavy builds, especially when discounted PCIe 5.0 x16 Two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 sockets, two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 sockets, Wi-Fi 6E Large, expensive board with more capacity than most gaming-only builds need
ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero Intel LGA1700 Existing compatible Intel builds that need premium I/O PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot Five M.2 slots in ASUS’s listed configuration, Wi-Fi 6E, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, 2.5 Gb Ethernet Premium cost and an older platform; check how M.2 use affects PCIe lanes
Competent mainstream board AM5 or compatible Intel platform One GPU, ordinary storage needs, and cost-conscious gaming builds Look for a CPU-connected primary PCIe x16 slot; confirm its electrical width Choose only the M.2, USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet features you will use Fewer premium ports or expansion options than flagship boards

These are use-case recommendations, not a claim that one board is best for every build. Current retail prices and stock vary by country and date; no current street prices are established here. Gigabyte’s X670E Aorus Master had a reported launch price of $499.99 in Tom’s Hardware’s review, which is historical rather than a current price. Tom’s Hardware’s X670E Aorus Master review.

What an RTX 4090 motherboard actually needs

A compatible CPU platform

The motherboard must support your processor and memory. Start by choosing AMD AM5 or the Intel socket that matches the CPU you plan to use. Then check the board maker’s CPU support list for the exact processor and required BIOS version. A product listing alone may not tell you whether an older board needs a firmware update before it can boot with a newer CPU.

A suitable primary graphics slot

The RTX 4090 supports PCI Express Gen 4. NVIDIA’s specifications identify its interface as PCIe Gen 4, so a full-length, CPU-connected PCIe 4.0 x16 slot is a direct match. A PCIe 5.0 graphics slot is backward compatible, but the card does not require PCIe 5.0. NVIDIA RTX 4090 specifications.

Keep four separate details in mind when reading motherboard specifications:

  • Generation: PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 describes the interface generation.
  • Electrical width: x16, x8, and x4 indicate how many lanes the slot receives. A long, x16-shaped slot can be wired for fewer lanes.
  • Connection: A slot can connect to the CPU or through the chipset. The manual identifies the actual route and any sharing.
  • Physical fit: A motherboard slot’s position does not guarantee that a very thick graphics card will leave neighboring slots accessible.

Do not assume every x8 setup has the same effect in every game or workload. The RTX 4090’s intended interface is PCIe Gen 4, but performance with fewer lanes can depend on software and the rest of the system. If full x16 operation matters to you, confirm that installing other devices will not split the GPU’s lanes.

Features that fit your build

For a single graphics card, prioritize CPU support, a well-placed primary slot, enough M.2 storage, useful USB ports, the networking you actually need, and a firmware recovery option such as BIOS Flashback. More VRM phases, RGB lighting, or a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot are not automatic reasons to pay extra.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose AM5 for a new Ryzen build

AMD’s chipset information lists X870E and X870 as supporting Ryzen 9000, 8000, and 7000 processors, DDR5, PCIe 5.0 graphics and NVMe connectivity, and USB4. X870E offers one PCIe 5.0 x16 link or two x8 links in AMD’s chipset table. Check the specific motherboard manual for its actual slot layout, M.2 connections, and sharing behavior. VIPERA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition Graphic Card
  • 16.384 NVIDIA CUDA Core
  • Supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR and Variable Refresh Rate as specified in HDMI 2.1a
  • New Flow Multiprocessors: Up to 2x performance and power efficiency
  • Fourth Generation Tensor Cores: up to 2x AI performance
  • Third Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance

For a gaming-focused Ryzen build, a high-end chipset is worthwhile when its storage, USB4, networking, or expansion features solve a real need. It is not required simply because the GPU is an RTX 4090. A mainstream B650 or B850 board may be a better fit if it supports your CPU and supplies the slots and ports you need.

Choose Intel based on the CPU you own or intend to use

A Z790 board remains suitable for an RTX 4090 when paired with a supported LGA1700 processor. It is most compelling for an existing Intel build or when a board’s specific I/O justifies its price. Do not choose an Intel motherboard just because the graphics card is high-end, and do not treat LGA1700 as a reason by itself to expect a long CPU-upgrade path.

Recommended boards by use case

Best current AMD enthusiast direction: an X870E or X870 board

Choose a well-equipped X870E or X870 board for a new Ryzen build when you want USB4, PCIe 5.0 NVMe support, or broader expansion options. Those features offer flexibility for storage and other devices; they do not make the RTX 4090 run as a PCIe 5.0 card. The exact number and placement of M.2 sockets, network ports, and usable expansion slots vary by model, so compare board manuals rather than relying on chipset branding alone.

Buy this class if: You will use its newer storage or connectivity features, or want a current AM5 board with the options you need. Skip the premium if: your plan is one RTX 4090, one or two drives, and ordinary USB and networking.

Best discounted AMD enthusiast option: MSI MPG X670E Carbon WiFi

MSI lists PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics support, PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 support, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5 Gb Ethernet, and six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Its specification also lists x16/x0 and x8/x8 graphics configurations, making lane allocation particularly important if you add a second CPU-connected device. • TRI FROZR 3-Stay cool and quiet. MSI’s TRI FROZR 3 thermal design enhances heat dissipation all around the graphics card.
  • TORX FAN 5.0-Fan blades linked by ring arcs and a fan cowl work together to stabilize and maintain high-pressure airflow.
  • Copper Baseplate-Heat from the GPU and memory modules is captured by a copper baseplate and then rapidly transferred to Core Pipes.
  • Core Pipe-Precision-machined heat pipes ensure max contact and spread heat along the full length of the heatsink.
  • Airflow Control-Sections of different heatsink fins disrupt unwanted airflow harmonics and reduce noise.

It is a strong candidate when discounted and when its expansion options fit your build. Before buying, verify the exact Ryzen processor and memory against the current support information, and check the manual to see whether populating particular slots changes GPU lanes or disables ports.

Best for storage-heavy AMD builds: Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master

Gigabyte lists Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 support, PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics, two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 sockets, two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 sockets, and Wi-Fi 6E. Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master specifications.

This board is aimed at builders who will use its storage capacity or other enthusiast features. Its heatsinks and layout can make compact builds and oversized GPU installations more difficult, and paying a premium for unused features is poor value. The reported $499.99 launch price is not a current retail quote.

Best premium Z790 option for an existing Intel build: ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero

ASUS lists an Intel Z790 chipset, LGA1700 socket, DDR5, a PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot, five M.2 slots in the listed configuration, Wi-Fi 6E, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, Intel 2.5 Gb Ethernet, and a 20+1 power-stage design. ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero specifications.

Its case is premium connectivity, not extra RTX 4090 performance. Consider it when you already have a compatible LGA1700 CPU or can obtain the board at a price that makes its I/O worthwhile. Check ASUS’s current CPU and memory support, BIOS requirements, and lane-sharing details before purchase.

Best value for a single-GPU gaming PC: a suitable mainstream board

For one RTX 4090, one or two NVMe drives, and no unusual add-in cards, a competent mainstream AM5 or compatible Intel board is usually enough. Look for a primary slot that runs at the intended lane width, adequate cooling for your chosen CPU, the required number of M.2 sockets, and the ports you will use. A BIOS recovery feature can also simplify a build if firmware needs updating.

Spending less on the motherboard can leave more budget for the CPU, cooling, power supply, case airflow, or display—parts that may matter more to the overall system than flagship-board features.

How PCIe lanes and M.2 sharing can affect the GPU

Motherboards have a limited number of direct CPU lanes as well as chipset-connected lanes. Depending on the design, populating a second expansion slot can split CPU-connected graphics lanes—for example, from x16 to x8/x8. A physically long secondary slot may instead run at x4 through the chipset. Neither its length nor a retailer’s brief feature list tells you the whole story.

M.2 drives can also share resources. On one board, an M.2 socket may use dedicated lanes; on another, installing a particular drive or adapter may disable SATA ports or change expansion-slot behavior. These details are model-specific. Before purchase, use the manual’s block diagram and storage or expansion tables to check:

  • Whether the primary graphics slot remains at x16 with your planned M.2 drives and add-in cards.
  • Whether an M.2 adapter in a PCIe slot changes the GPU to x8.
  • Which M.2 sockets are PCIe, and whether any also support SATA M.2.
  • Whether populating an M.2 socket disables one or more SATA ports.
  • Whether the M.2 heatsink fits your SSD and provides suitable cooling.

MSI’s X670E Carbon specification, for example, lists x16/x0 and x8/x8 graphics options; the manual is the place to determine which installed-device combination applies. For a second GPU or other lane-sensitive add-in cards, check the board’s own bifurcation documentation. ASUS describes board-specific PCIe bifurcation and add-in-card compatibility in its PCIe bifurcation support information.

Check physical fit before choosing a motherboard

The motherboard cannot fix a graphics card that does not fit the case. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition dimensions are 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and three slots thick; NVIDIA also recommends additional room for the power cable. Partner cards can be longer, wider, thicker, and heavier, so use the exact card manufacturer’s dimensions rather than treating the Founders Edition measurements as universal. NVIDIA RTX 4090 specifications.

Check the case and board together for:

  • GPU length against the case’s maximum, including the space occupied by front fans or a radiator.
  • GPU thickness and which lower PCIe slots it covers.
  • Clearance around chipset fans, M.2 heatsinks, and front-panel connectors.
  • Side-panel clearance for the GPU power cable; avoid forcing a sharp bend against the panel.
  • Whether a support bracket can be installed without blocking a fan or connector.
  • Airflow around a large, high-power card, especially in a compact case.

ATX, micro-ATX, or Mini-ITX describes motherboard form factor; it does not establish whether an RTX 4090 will fit. Check the specific GPU, case, power supply, cooler, and—if used—riser cable as a complete system.

Power delivery, cooling, and networking

Motherboard power delivery is for the CPU

The RTX 4090 receives power through its auxiliary GPU power connection, not the motherboard’s CPU VRM. Choose a board whose power delivery and cooling suit the processor at its intended power settings. For sustained high-load work on a high-end CPU, VRM heatsinks, BIOS behavior, and CPU cooling are more relevant than a headline phase count. Manufacturers’ phase counts are not directly comparable across different designs.

Size the power supply for the whole system

NVIDIA lists 450 W total graphics power and an 850 W minimum system power for the RTX 4090 Founders Edition, with that system-power figure based on a configuration using a Ryzen 9 5900X. This is reference guidance, not a guarantee for every processor, overclock, or complete build. NVIDIA lists either three PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter or a 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable as supported power options. Consult the GPU and PSU makers’ instructions; do not substitute a daisy-chained cable for required separate connections unless the PSU manufacturer explicitly supports that arrangement. NVIDIA RTX 4090 specifications and RTX 4090 Quick Start Guide.

Choose networking and audio for your setup

Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 is a network convenience, not a graphics-performance feature. The useful choice depends on your router, distance, interference, wired Ethernet availability, and Bluetooth needs. For many home connections, 2.5 Gb Ethernet is sufficient; faster Ethernet is more relevant to compatible local networks, NAS devices, or workstation workflows.

Onboard audio affects the analog output options and convenience, not game frame rates. Give it extra weight if you use demanding headphones or analog speakers without an external DAC or audio interface.

Choose by build, not by the GPU label

  • New Ryzen build: Compare AM5 boards by CPU support, BIOS, required M.2 slots, USB4 or other I/O, and the manual’s lane-sharing diagrams. Choose X870E or X870 when you will use the features; consider a mainstream board when you will not.
  • Existing Intel LGA1700 build: Keep a compatible Z790 board if it meets your CPU, memory, storage, and I/O needs. A board upgrade is not required solely to install an RTX 4090.
  • One GPU and a couple of SSDs: A mainstream board with a well-connected primary slot and enough M.2 sockets is the practical starting point.
  • Four or more NVMe drives: Map every drive to the board’s M.2 sockets and read the storage table for lane sharing, SATA disables, and cooling before buying.
  • Capture card or high-speed networking card: Confirm that a three- or four-slot GPU will not physically block the required slot, then verify its electrical connection.
  • Compact case: Verify the exact GPU model, cable clearance, power supply, cooling, and airflow; motherboard form factor alone is not a compatibility check.
  • Used or older board: Confirm CPU-supporting BIOS, socket condition, included antennas, M.2 screws and heatsinks, slot condition, and return or warranty terms.

A second RTX 4090 is an edge case, not a normal gaming upgrade path: the card does not support NVLink, and dual-card builds bring substantial spacing, airflow, power, lane-allocation, and software-support constraints. Two x16-shaped slots do not guarantee two full-bandwidth links or usable physical clearance.
