The Steam Deck’s central promise held up: it brings a substantial slice of PC gaming to a handheld, with flexible controls and a desktop mode. But it is not a smaller gaming desktop or a console where every game simply works. The original hands-on session, held on pre-production hardware in August 2021, showed both sides: impressive performance in some games and rough compatibility edges in others. Today’s LCD and OLED models retain that basic trade-off.
What the 2021 hands-on session actually tested
The original report was published August 6, 2021, after a roughly one-hour demonstration at Valve’s Bellevue, Washington office the previous day. The unit was an early pre-production 512GB model, and Valve warned that it still had bugs. This was a preview, not a final-product review: it could not establish long-term comfort, retail software quality, battery life, or how broadly games would work after launch.
The account mixed direct play impressions with a few reported frame-rate observations. Its figures describe that demonstration build and should not be treated as a performance guarantee for current hardware or every game. GeekWire’s August 2021 hands-on report documents the session.
How it feels to hold and control
Large, weighty, and built around the grips
The original LCD Deck weighs about 1.7 pounds. The 2021 reporter found it lighter than expected, but still large, with weight concentrated around the grips. Its fuller controls felt less cramped than a standard Nintendo Switch, though the size and weight may become tiring in a long session. Comfort depends on hand size, grip, game and whether you use the sticks, D-pad, trackpads, gyro or rear buttons; one person’s verdict cannot settle it for everyone.

A controller layout with PC ambitions
The Deck combines two analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, four shoulder buttons, two trackpads, a touchscreen, a gyroscope and four programmable rear buttons. It also has volume controls, a power button, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB-C port. The D-pad’s position takes adjustment for some players. The left trackpad can serve as a D-pad substitute, while the right can provide cursor or aiming control; the original previewer found that right pad less immediately intuitive.
Steam Input lets players remap controls and use community or custom layouts, which can make keyboard-and-mouse games workable on the handheld. That flexibility comes with a setup cost: a layout that suits one game or player may not suit another, and some titles still depend on keyboard shortcuts or precise mouse input.
What the games demonstrated—and what they did not
The Deck’s custom AMD APU pairs Zen 2 CPU cores with RDNA 2 graphics. It was designed for a low-power handheld and a 1280×800 screen, not desktop-class graphics settings. A practical expectation is roughly 30–60 frames per second in compatible games, with the result depending on the title, settings, frame-rate cap and power demand. Older or well-optimized games can fare very well; newer, demanding releases may need reduced settings, upscaling or a lower frame-rate target.

In the 2021 pre-production session, Doom Eternal was reported at about 110fps, an unusually strong result in that demonstration rather than a typical target for the library. Control reportedly ran well. Portal 2 showed texture problems, Sunset Overdrive failed while loading shaders, The Ascent was difficult to read on the small screen, and Hades was also among the games tried. These mixed results illustrated a defining point: raw speed is only part of the experience. Compatibility, readable interfaces and reliable launch behavior matter just as much.

The Deck is powerful for its size and power envelope; it is not the handheld equivalent of a modern desktop gaming PC. Its native resolution helps keep the graphics workload manageable, but playing on an external monitor at a higher resolution can make performance constraints more apparent.
Compatibility: check the games you actually play
SteamOS is Linux-based, while many PC games are built for Windows. Proton translates the Windows games environment so many titles can run on Linux, but it cannot make every game or launcher behave identically. Valve’s compatibility labels are a useful starting point:

A badge is not a promise that every update, mode, peripheral or individual setup will work flawlessly. Anti-cheat systems, launchers, unsupported video codecs, DRM, always-online requirements, tiny text, awkward controller mapping and online-play restrictions can all spoil an otherwise functional game. Check the specific games and modes you care about before buying, especially competitive multiplayer titles.
SteamOS: console-like Game Mode, flexible desktop
Two ways to use the same computer
Game Mode offers a controller-friendly interface for launching and managing games. Desktop Mode opens a Linux desktop environment for browsing, installing software and using PC applications. In the 2021 demonstration, Valve connected the Deck to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and showed Blender, VLC, Chromium, Visual Studio Code and a game. That illustrates what the device can do, not that it replaces a powerful workstation.

Users can add non-Steam games and software, and can install another operating system such as Windows. Valve also supports multi-boot and booting from microSD. Those options increase flexibility but may add configuration work and reduce the simplicity of the default SteamOS workflow. Installing Windows does not guarantee that every game, driver or peripheral will work better.

Where the PC flexibility stops
The Deck can serve as a basic Linux desktop, browser and media machine, small development computer, docked Steam client or portable emulation and indie-game system. It is less suited to demanding creative workloads or as a full replacement for a high-performance desktop. The small screen and virtual keyboard, single USB-C port, Linux application compatibility and limited graphics performance all matter. Valve says external GPUs are not supported; PC VR headsets may technically connect, but the Deck is not optimized for PC VR. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ covers these platform capabilities and limits.
Today’s models: LCD versus OLED
Valve’s US-facing product page listed these models and prices on August 18, 2026. Prices, regional availability, taxes and promotions can change; check the page before buying.
| Model | Price shown by Valve (US, Aug. 18, 2026) | Display | Storage and notable hardware | Valve-advertised gameplay battery range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck LCD 256GB | $789 | 7-inch, 1280×800 LCD, up to 60Hz | 256GB NVMe SSD, 7nm APU, Wi-Fi 5, 40Wh battery | 2–8 hours, depending on content |
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB | $949 | 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz | 512GB NVMe SSD, 6nm APU, Wi-Fi 6E, 50Wh battery | 3–12 hours, depending on content |
| Steam Deck OLED 1TB | $949 | 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz | 1TB NVMe SSD, 6nm APU, Wi-Fi 6E, 50Wh battery, etched anti-glare glass | 3–12 hours, depending on content |
The OLED models’ higher refresh ceiling, HDR contrast, larger battery and wireless improvements are meaningful quality-of-life upgrades, but they are not a major raw-performance generation. Valve says it aimed to maintain the same performance specifications for OLED and that Deck Verified ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models. The 1280×800 resolution is modest beside a PC monitor, but suits a handheld screen and helps keep the graphics workload in check. Valve also warns that setting an application refresh rate above the hardware’s limit does not improve performance and may increase battery drain. See Valve’s OLED performance and compatibility notes and its refresh-rate guidance.

Battery, storage and docking
Battery life depends on the game and settings
Valve advertises 2–8 hours for the LCD model and 3–12 hours for OLED, with actual play time varying by content. A demanding game, high brightness, Wi-Fi use, higher refresh rate, shader compilation and performance settings can all affect runtime. Those broad ranges are not a promise for any particular game; plan for shorter sessions between charges when playing demanding titles.
Storage is part of the buying decision
Current models use NVMe SSDs, and games can be installed to microSD. Valve formats a Deck microSD card as ext4 with casefolding, so do not assume it can move between the Deck and another device without reformatting or other compatibility work. Modern PC games can be large; 256GB may require more frequent game juggling, while larger internal storage or a card can help. SSD replacement is possible, but opening the Deck carries a risk of damaging components, and Valve warns that damage caused by modification may not be covered. Valve directs owners to iFixit parts and repair guides.
A dock adds connections, not speed
A dock or USB-C hub can provide monitor output, USB ports, Ethernet and power delivery, or you can use Bluetooth peripherals. Docking does not increase gaming performance: Valve says the Deck runs at full performance in handheld mode. External displays and hubs can introduce compatibility or settings issues, so docking is best understood as a convenience for desk or living-room use, not a performance upgrade.
How it compares with a Nintendo Switch
Both offer handheld play, optional display output and a console-like launcher. The Steam Deck is a more open PC with a much broader and less predictable software environment, traditional PC controls and access to a Steam library. It is also larger and heavier than a Switch and may require more per-game setup. It does not provide Nintendo’s first-party catalogue. The useful comparison is not which device “wins,” but whether the player values a curated console experience or a flexible PC handheld.
Who should consider a Steam Deck?
It is a strong fit for
- Existing Steam users who want to play a compatible library away from a desk.
- Players who prioritize portability over maximum graphics settings.
- Fans of indie, older, turn-based, emulation and controller-friendly games.
- Tinkerers who value desktop access, control customization and software flexibility.
- Travelers who want a self-contained gaming device and accept its size and battery variability.
It is a poor fit for
- Players who expect every PC game to behave like a console release.
- Competitive players who require high refresh rates and maximum performance.
- People whose main games rely on unsupported anti-cheat or launcher systems.
- Buyers who want a lightweight device or cellular connectivity.
- Anyone seeking a substitute for a high-performance desktop workstation or unwilling to manage occasional PC troubleshooting.
If SteamOS has a problem
For general software instability, Valve’s recovery guidance starts with updates and a restart. Use recovery tools only when simpler steps fail; re-imaging can erase data. The current steps and controls should be checked against Valve’s SteamOS recovery instructions because support procedures can change.
Quick Recap
- Install available updates at Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Restart from that section or choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode if the problem began after adding software.
- If the device is unresponsive, hold the power button for about 4 seconds on LCD or 7 seconds on OLED. If needed, Valve’s instructions list a longer forced power-off hold of 10 seconds for LCD or 16 seconds for OLED.
- If it cannot boot or needs a full wipe, use SteamOS recovery tools. Consider rollback where appropriate before re-imaging, which can erase data.
