Its strong contrast and low input lag are appealing, but independent testing found substantial motion blur—especially in dark scenes—and possible brightness flicker with variable refresh rate (VRR). Buy it only at a clear discount, with a useful return window, and if you value contrast more than clean motion. For competitive gaming, a newer 240Hz IPS display is usually the safer choice at a similar price.
What the C27RG5 is—and which model this review covers
This review concerns the 27-inch Samsung C27RG5, also identified as the CRG50 or C27RG50FQN; the US model number is commonly listed as LC27RG50FQNXZA. Samsung’s official support page identifies the CRG50 Series C27RG50FQN, while RTINGS tested the 27-inch C27RG5. Do not assume the 24-inch C24RG5 is equivalent: RTINGS identifies that as a separate 144Hz, 1800R model, compared with 240Hz and 1500R for the 27-inch version (RTINGS review and model details).

Gaming performance: 240Hz is not the whole story
A 240Hz display can refresh about every 4.17ms, but refresh rate alone does not determine how clear fast movement looks. Refresh rate describes how often the screen can update; input lag is the delay before a signal appears; pixel response is how quickly pixels change. Motion clarity is the practical result of all of these together.
RTINGS found very low input lag at the C27RG5’s maximum refresh rate, but also poor pixel response and significant blur, particularly behind moving objects in dark scenes. Its overdrive options made little meaningful improvement, and it observed brightness flicker with some VRR content. These findings make the panel’s motion performance its central weakness for competitive play (RTINGS testing).
Tom’s Hardware’s 2019 review was substantially more positive, describing the monitor as unusually fast for a VA panel and reporting strong gameplay performance and low input lag (Tom’s Hardware review). The results differ, so the C27RG5 should not be treated as uniformly poor or uniformly excellent: Tom’s account shows that it can feel responsive, while RTINGS’ later standardized testing is a serious warning for buyers who prioritize motion clarity. For context on the latter review’s response, lag, and viewing-angle tests, see Tom’s Hardware’s test page.
Who may still like it for games
- Players who want high refresh rates in games their PC can run at very high frame rates, and who are willing to tolerate some trailing.
- Players who prefer the deeper blacks and contrast typical of VA panels, especially in a direct-facing, single-player setup.
- Buyers who find it substantially cheaper than modern 240Hz IPS options and can return it if motion artifacts or flicker are distracting.
Who should look elsewhere
- Competitive players who want consistently clear movement and minimal dark-level smearing.
- Anyone particularly sensitive to ghosting or VRR brightness changes.
- Buyers choosing between this and a similarly priced newer 240Hz IPS monitor: the newer IPS is generally the safer motion-focused option.
Picture quality: contrast versus sharpness and viewing angles
The VA panel’s main picture advantage is contrast. Samsung rates static contrast at 3,000:1, and RTINGS found high contrast, good black uniformity, excellent gray uniformity, and generally good reflection handling. Those traits suit a single viewer playing darker games in a room where reflections matter.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
The trade-off is that dark transitions can smear, and the image degrades when viewed off-center more than on a typical IPS alternative. That makes the C27RG5 less suitable for several people watching together or for work that depends on consistent color across the screen. Samsung lists 300 nits typical brightness; this is not an HDR display, and Tom’s Hardware notes the lack of HDR and extended color support in its review.
At 27 inches, 1920 × 1080 works out to roughly 81 pixels per inch, as Tom’s Hardware also notes. Games are comparatively easy to drive at high frame rates, but text and fine interface details look less crisp than on a 24-inch 1080p display or a 27-inch 1440p monitor. The C27RG5 therefore makes more sense as a gaming-first screen than as a general-purpose desktop display.
Design, connections, and ergonomics
The 1500R curve wraps the screen around a single viewer, but the stand is tilt-only: Samsung lists an approximate range from -2° to +15°, with no height, swivel, or pivot adjustment. If that position does not suit your desk, use a riser or a compatible 75 × 75mm VESA mount. Check the arm’s weight rating and screw fit before installation.
The inputs are one DisplayPort 1.2 connection and two HDMI ports, plus a 3.5mm headphone output. Samsung lists features including Eye Saver Mode, Flicker Free, Black Equalizer, Low Input Lag Mode, Refresh Rate Optimizer, and Screen Size Optimizer. It does not list a USB hub. The monitor also uses an external power supply.

- A MODERN AESTHETIC: Featuring a super-slim design with ultra-thin border bezels, this monitor enhances any setup with a sleek, modern look. Enjoy a lightweight and stylish addition to any environment.
Do not count on built-in speakers. Samsung’s current support specifications list an audio output but do not list speakers; Tom’s Hardware’s review contains conflicting speaker information between its specification table and its cons list. Plan to use headphones or external speakers rather than relying on a seller’s listing.
Office work and everyday use
The 27-inch screen gives a single user room for ordinary desktop tasks, and its reflection handling and contrast can be useful in a bright room or for video and games. But the 1080p resolution is relatively coarse at this size, the stand offers limited positioning, and off-angle viewing is weak. RTINGS likewise describes it as only adequate for office use, citing mediocre text clarity, poor ergonomics, and image degradation at an angle.
For reading, coding, detailed creative work, or sharing the screen, a 27-inch 1440p IPS monitor is generally a better-balanced choice if your budget and graphics hardware allow it. The C27RG5’s 1080p resolution is easier to drive, but that advantage matters most when high frame rates are the priority.
How the reviews differ
Tom’s Hardware published its review in 2019 and reported favorable gaming performance, contrast, color accuracy, and low input lag. RTINGS’ later testing emphasizes slow response behavior, motion blur, VRR flicker, and weak ergonomics. The reviews use different testing approaches, units, settings, and evaluation priorities; neither result guarantees how every individual C27RG5 will behave.

For a buyer mainly concerned with clean motion, give particular weight to RTINGS’ response-time findings rather than equating a high refresh-rate label with fast pixel transitions. Tom’s Hardware’s favorable account remains relevant evidence that the monitor can feel fluid and responsive in favorable conditions. RTINGS also notes possible unit-to-unit variation; its tested sample was manufactured in January 2021.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set it up and check it while returns are available
- Confirm the model: check the rear label or on-screen information for the 27-inch C27RG50FQN or LC27RG50FQNXZA family. Do not rely on a marketplace title, since the 24-inch C24RG5 is a different 144Hz model.
- Connect by DisplayPort: use DisplayPort from the gaming PC as the preferred route for 240Hz and adaptive-sync gaming. Maximum refresh rate still depends on the source, cable, and settings.
- Set the refresh rate: update the graphics driver, then open Windows Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select 240Hz if offered. Confirm the GPU control panel and the game are not limiting the screen to 60Hz or 144Hz.
- Try adaptive sync: enable G-Sync Compatible or FreeSync in the graphics control panel, then test games you actually play, including dark scenes and menu transitions. If brightness pulses distract you, compare the same content with VRR disabled.
- Check motion: test quick lateral movement, camera pans in a dark game, and high-contrast scrolling text. Look for dark trails, ghosting, inverse ghosting, and whether overdrive choices change the result. Some smearing is a VA behavior; it is not by itself proof of a defect.
- Inspect the unit: check for dead or stuck pixels, uneven backlighting, excessive clouding, brightness flicker, adapter buzzing, and damaged stand parts. Verify the included power adapter and any accessories you need.
- Check desk fit: confirm that the tilt-only stand puts the screen at a comfortable height. If using a riser or VESA arm, verify stability, weight support, and compatible mounting hardware.
Samsung lists G-Sync support and AMD FreeSync support, but this is adaptive-sync compatibility, not a claim that every computer, HDMI setup, or game will behave identically. The Samsung US model-specific warranty page is a starting point for coverage; confirm terms for your country, seller, purchase channel, and product condition.
Buying advice and alternatives
No dependable current new-retail price was established for this older design as of August 2026. Treat listings as potentially old stock, used, refurbished, or region-specific unless the seller clearly states condition and warranty. Tom’s Hardware’s launch-era price was about $370, with a temporary $300 Black Friday 2019 promotion; those historical figures are not current price guidance.
Judge the offer against what else costs the same where you shop, rather than a fixed threshold:
- Consider it at a steep used or refurbished discount, if the exact model is confirmed, the panel passes inspection, and returns are available.
- Pass if it approaches the price of a current 240Hz IPS monitor, or if the seller offers no meaningful return protection.
- Look at a 27-inch 1440p high-refresh option if you want a sharper desktop and a more versatile mix of gaming and work. RTINGS provides direct comparisons with the AOC CQ27G2 and Dell S2721DGF; these pages are useful for comparing tested characteristics, not current prices or availability.
- Consider a 24-inch 1080p high-refresh display if you prefer sharper 1080p text and a smaller screen; the C24RG5 is 144Hz, not a substitute when 240Hz is essential.
- Choose a modern VA model if contrast is your priority, but check independent motion testing for that specific model rather than assuming all VA panels behave alike.
For used or refurbished stock, confirm the included adapter, stand, VESA hardware, exact model, return terms, and any remaining warranty before paying. Samsung’s Best Buy product listing may help identify the product, but a listing alone does not establish current availability or condition.
