The Metropolitan Museum of Art launched Art Links on January 23, 2025, calling it the museum’s first Web3-based experience. Developed with art and technology platform TRLab, the mobile-first browser game challenged players to connect works from The Met’s collection. Its NFT rewards and prize giveaway belonged to a 2025 campaign that has ended; the available official materials do not establish whether the game is playable now.
What was Art Links?
Art Links was a serialized art-connection puzzle built around The Met’s collection. The launch announcement described more than 140 artworks and weekly challenges over 12 weeks. The project was created with TRLab; The Met described it as its first Web3-based experience. The Met’s January 23, 2025 announcement framed the game as a short-session, mobile-first experience played in a browser.
Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer, called it “This groundbreaking online game is an exciting first for The Met and a singular experience in the museum field at large,”
How did the puzzles work?
Each chain contained seven artworks connected by six links. Players moved through three rounds of increasing difficulty and had four attempts to complete the chain. The game was designed not to require prior art-history knowledge, and an icon on each artwork representation opened built-in learning material. Art Links game details

Connections drew on several kinds of clues, including Highlights, Material, and Emojis, alongside Web3 concepts such as randomization, security, and ledgers. Destinee Filmore, Assistant Curator in The Met’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, led the artwork selection with a cross-disciplinary museum team. The Met said every chain included at least one work from its 20th- and 21st-century collection.
Did players need a crypto wallet?
No wallet was required to play. The official game page says Art Links was built on Base, and that players had to sign in and connect or create a wallet only to claim NFT badges and achievements. Official Art Links page

The distinction matters: the puzzles were browser-game content, while the wallet was for the collectible layer. The Met’s launch materials also said the game used screen-reader-friendly code and visual descriptions developed with its Access team and individual testers.
What NFTs and prizes were part of the 2025 campaign?
Players could claim free NFT badges for completed weekly chains and earn achievements through challenges. At launch, The Met said five of seven achievement tokens were free and two could be purchased; it also stated that no purchase was necessary to enter or win. Under the official rules, the NFTs granted no intellectual-property rights in the artworks, had no cash value, and could not be transferred.

The giveaway is over, so its prizes are historical rather than current offers. The official FAQ says the promotion ended April 17, 2025, with reward drops scheduled for April 21 and 23. The rules instead specify an April 16, 2025 giveaway end date and an April 17 snapshot. The Met listed 570 rewards with an approximate total retail value of $39,437.50; these were campaign figures, not an ongoing prize pool. Possible rewards included museum publications, a Met Store code, virtual and member events, a one-year membership, and a curator-led tour. Art Links FAQ · Official promotion rules
