The change applies to 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11; Steam client support for 32-bit Windows ended on January 1, 2026. It does not mean that Steam games must be 64-bit: Valve said 32-bit games remain supported on 64-bit Windows.
What changed—and what did not
The change concerns the Steam client, the desktop application used to access the store, library, downloads and community features. Valve’s December 19, 2025 update made that client 64-bit on Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. The announcement is available in Steam’s December 2025 client announcement.
Three different things are easy to conflate: the client’s architecture, the architecture of Windows, and the architecture of a game. A 64-bit Steam client requires a compatible 64-bit Windows installation. It does not require every game launched through Steam to be 64-bit. Valve’s October 2, 2025 notice said 32-bit games would continue to be supported on Windows 10 64-bit (Steam’s October 2 client update).
Timeline: the client update and the support deadline
- December 19, 2025: Steam published the update completing the move to a 64-bit client on supported 64-bit Windows systems (Steam update announcement discussion).
- January 1, 2026, at 10 a.m.: Valve’s October notice set this as the end of Steam client support for 32-bit Windows. The December update did not mean that all 32-bit Windows installations stopped receiving updates on December 19; the notice allowed the 32-bit client to continue until the January deadline (Valve’s October notice).
Both dates have passed. The current question is whether your Windows installation can run the supported client, not whether to wait for the transition.

Which Windows systems are affected?
| System | What it means for Steam |
|---|---|
| Windows 11, 64-bit | Runs the 64-bit Steam client. |
| Windows 10, 64-bit | Runs the 64-bit Steam client; Valve says 32-bit games remain supported. |
| Windows 10, 32-bit | Steam client support ended January 1, 2026. This is an end of supported client updates, not proof that every existing installation stopped working at the same moment. |
| Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 | Already outside official Steam client support after Valve’s January 1, 2024 cutoff (Valve’s Windows support notice). |
A 32-bit Windows installation cannot run the new 64-bit client. Reinstalling Steam alone does not turn 32-bit Windows into 64-bit Windows. Whether the computer can move to 64-bit Windows depends on its processor and other system requirements.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under device specifications, find System type and check whether it says 64-bit operating system.
The operating-system entry is the immediate compatibility check. A separate description such as “64-bit-based processor” indicates processor capability; it does not by itself mean that the installed copy of Windows is 64-bit.

Do you need a separate Steam download?
On compatible 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, the practical guidance is to let Steam update through its ordinary client process; users generally do not need to find a separate public “Steam 64-bit” installer. This automatic-update guidance is described in Steam community support discussion, rather than a formal Valve troubleshooting procedure.
- In Steam, open Steam → Check for Steam Client Updates, if that command is present in your client’s menu.
- Allow any update to finish, then restart Steam.
- To review the installed client build and update date, open Steam → About Steam.
If Steam will not start, first check the Windows architecture and whether the operating system is supported. A blocked update, damaged installation, security software, or hardware and driver issue can also prevent a normal update or startup.

The folder name C:Program Files (x86)Steam is not proof that the running client is still 32-bit. An installation can retain a legacy directory after an architecture change. Community discussions also mention checking for Steam OverlayUI64.exe, but that is an investigative clue, not a definitive Valve-documented verification step (community discussion).
Will 32-bit games still work?
Yes, a 64-bit Steam client can launch 32-bit Windows games on a supported 64-bit Windows installation. The client and game are separate programs with separate architectures, and Valve explicitly said 32-bit games would remain supported on Windows 10 64-bit (October 2, 2025 notice).

That does not guarantee every older title will run perfectly. A specific game may have trouble because of obsolete DRM, a discontinued launcher, missing runtimes, outdated graphics support, injected overlays, or game-specific bugs. A community report about a legacy title such as CS:GO Legacy is anecdotal and does not establish a general incompatibility between the 64-bit client and 32-bit games (Steam Client Beta discussion).

A 64-bit process has access to a larger address space than a 32-bit process, giving the client more headroom for current and future software requirements. That is an architectural advantage, not a published performance benchmark. Valve’s transition announcement does not establish a universal improvement in game frame rates, download speeds or crash rates.

The change is specifically about the Windows client. It should not be read as an announcement that the Steam clients for macOS or Linux underwent the same change.
What to do if you still use 32-bit Windows
Move to a compatible 64-bit Windows installation
If the hardware supports a supported 64-bit Windows edition, moving to it is the direct route back to a supported Steam client. Check compatibility and back up important files before changing or reinstalling Windows. Do not assume cloud saves cover every game; save handling depends on the title.
Replace incompatible hardware
If the processor cannot run a compatible 64-bit operating system, reinstalling Steam will not solve the limitation. A newer computer or compatible replacement hardware is the practical route to supported Steam use.
Keep a legacy system isolated
You can retain an older Windows setup for offline or legacy software, but it is not a supported Steam solution. Unsupported Windows versions can lack security fixes; Valve cited security and platform requirements when it ended support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (Valve’s Windows support notice). Treat continued use as a security risk, especially for accounts and personal data.
