Apple’s reported gaming hub is now a real product: Apple Games launched with iOS 26 and is also available on iPad and Mac. It brings game discovery, a library, social features and launch shortcuts together, but it is not a cloud-gaming service or an Xbox Game Pass equivalent.
What Apple Games does
Apple Games is a gaming-focused home for finding and opening games across Apple devices. It collects recently played titles, previously downloaded games, recommendations, friends’ activity and game-related events in one place. Apple announced the app on June 9, 2025, as part of iOS 26; Apple now lists it for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement introduced the app, while its Games app developer page describes how it connects players with games and Game Center features.
- Continue Playing: Return to recent games.
- Library: Browse games you have downloaded, including titles that are no longer installed.
- Discovery: Find recommendations and games friends play.
- Events and updates: See activity associated with games.
- Social play: View achievements, leaderboards and challenges, and follow friends’ activity.
- Apple Arcade: Browse the subscription catalog from the same app.
Apple Games organizes access; it does not change the price or business model of an individual App Store game. A title appearing in the app does not mean it is free or included with Apple Arcade.
Apple Games gives Game Center a new front door
Apple Games is the new user-facing hub, but Apple’s documentation says Game Center continues to power features such as achievements, leaderboards and challenges. It is more accurate to describe the app as a new home for Game Center-backed features than as the end of Game Center. The social tools are most useful when a game supports the relevant features and you are signed in to Game Center.

On iOS 26, the Game Overlay also lets players adjust settings, connect with friends and view game-related updates without leaving a game. Apple lists this among the update’s gaming features in its iOS 26 feature guide.
Which devices support Apple Games?
Apple says Games is available to customers and preinstalled on devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26 and later. It can also be downloaded from the App Store. The iOS 26 announcement lists iPhone 11 and later as eligible for that operating-system update; that compatibility statement does not guarantee identical behavior for every game or feature on every device.

Apple’s current Games-app materials identify iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple Arcade games can also be available on Apple TV, but that does not establish Apple Games as a standalone Apple TV app.
Apple Games, Apple Arcade and Xbox Game Pass are different things
The Xbox comparison makes sense as a description of a centralized gaming interface and social layer, not as a claim that Apple has recreated Game Pass. Apple Games is the hub; Apple Arcade is an optional catalog subscription; the App Store remains the marketplace for individual games. Xbox Game Pass is a separate subscription ecosystem, with cloud gaming available for eligible games and plans.

Apple described Apple Arcade as having more than 200 games in a June 4, 2026 announcement. At that time, the U.S. price was $6.99 per month, with a one-month free trial and family access for up to six people. Apple said Arcade games have no ads or in-app purchases; catalog and device availability vary by title, compatibility and region. Mac has a broader library view, with limits
Apple says the Mac Games app can show games downloaded from outside the App Store in Continue Playing and Library. That makes the Mac version more than a directory of Mac App Store purchases, but visibility is not the same as a universal launcher: Apple does not promise that Games will install, update or manage every title from Steam, Epic Games Store or another storefront. Nor does a listing establish cross-save or cross-device compatibility; those depend on the individual game and its developer.

How to find and launch a game
- Update the device to iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26, or a later version.
- Open the Games app. If it is not installed, search for Apple Games in the App Store.
- Choose Continue Playing to return to a recent game, or open Library to browse downloaded and previously downloaded titles.
- Explore recommendations, events, friends’ activity or Apple Arcade, then select a title to launch it or redownload it when available.
Navigation labels and layout can vary by device, region and software revision. If a title is missing, check that it was downloaded through a supported source, remains available and is compatible with the device. If friends, scores or challenges are absent, check Game Center sign-in and whether the game implements those features. An Arcade title that will not run on another device may have narrower platform eligibility.

Apple Games gives players a dedicated place to rediscover titles and gives game events and Apple Arcade more visibility. It is also a promotional surface: in June 2026 Apple said developers could submit featuring nominations for special offers or limited-time discounts in the app. That points to a role in both discovery and game promotion, though it does not by itself establish Apple’s strategic motives. Developers can see Apple’s announcement on App Store capabilities.

The original Xbox-like framing appeared in a May 2025 report, before Apple announced the product. Its enduring point is that Apple is making games easier to find and return to—not that the app has the same catalog or subscription model as Xbox. The original report is best read as a description of the idea that later became Apple Games.
