The ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows 11 gaming handheld with an Xbox-focused, controller-first interface—not a portable Xbox console. Xbox mode makes the device easier to navigate from the couch or on the go, while Windows lets it run supported PC games and applications from multiple storefronts. The standard Ally is the lower-cost option; the Ally X has a faster processor, more memory and storage, and a larger battery.
What is the ROG Xbox Ally?
ASUS makes the ROG Xbox Ally in collaboration with Xbox and Microsoft. Both models run Windows 11 Home and combine PC hardware with built-in gamepad controls. The Xbox branding describes the software experience and access to Xbox services; it does not mean the handheld runs the Xbox console operating system or can install every Xbox console game.
Microsoft describes its Xbox full-screen experience as a handheld-focused interface that can boot directly into Xbox mode and reduce background activity to dedicate more system resources to gameplay. The devices were announced in June 2025, with Xbox announcing an October 16, 2025 launch date. Microsoft’s announcement and Xbox’s launch details describe the collaboration and software. The hardware is available as the ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-spec ROG Xbox Ally X.
How the Xbox full-screen experience works
Xbox mode is designed for gamepad use. You can navigate the aggregated game library with the controls, use the dedicated Xbox button to open Game Bar, and hold that button to switch between open applications. The interface brings together games from supported sources, while Windows desktop access remains available when you need it.

Signing in to an Xbox account can bring supported saves, add-ons and achievements into the experience. Progress does not synchronize universally: cross-save depends on the individual game and account support. Xbox also presents Cloud Gaming and Remote Play as ways to play away from a console, subject to their separate service and network requirements. Xbox’s product page outlines these features.
Can the ROG Xbox Ally play Xbox games?
Sometimes locally, and sometimes by streaming. The key question is whether a game has a compatible Windows PC version, is available in the cloud catalog, or can be streamed from your own Xbox. The Ally does not run every Xbox Series X|S game natively.
| Method | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Windows PC version | Runs the PC edition locally from a supported store or launcher. | The game needs a compatible Windows version, and performance, controller support and anti-cheat compatibility vary. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Streams supported games from Xbox’s cloud service. | Requires an eligible membership, a title available in the cloud catalog, service availability in your region and a suitable internet connection. |
| Xbox Remote Play | Streams games from your own Xbox console to the handheld. | Requires a configured console and a sufficiently responsive network connection. |
For native play, ownership can also differ between console and PC editions; having a console license does not automatically mean you own the Windows version. Streaming avoids local hardware demands but adds network-dependent latency, so it is not an equivalent substitute for native play in every situation.
What Windows gaming adds—and what it complicates
Windows gives the Ally access to supported PC games and software beyond the Xbox app. Depending on the title and launcher, that can include Xbox PC games and PC Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA and other Windows launchers. It also allows desktop applications, mods, peripherals and ordinary Windows tasks.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That flexibility comes with compatibility exceptions. A title may be available on Xbox console but not Windows; a PC game may launch but lack good controller support; anti-cheat can block a game or mode; and some launchers or setup screens still work better with touch, a virtual keyboard, or a mouse. Compatibility badges such as “Should play great” and “Mostly compatible” are useful guidance, not promises of a particular frame rate or settings. ASUS describes supported PC storefronts and compatibility guidance on its ROG Xbox Ally page.
Xbox mode makes the handheld experience more approachable, but it does not turn Windows into a dedicated console operating system. Updates, sign-ins, background services, launcher behavior, sleep and resume, and controller focus can still require attention. The ability to switch to the Windows desktop is useful; it is also a reminder that this is a PC.
ROG Xbox Ally vs. ROG Xbox Ally X
The display and Windows experience are shared, but the X has a higher performance ceiling, more memory and storage, and a larger battery. Prices below are ASUS U.S. e-store listings checked August 18, 2026; they are not necessarily prices in other regions or at other retailers.
| Specification | ROG Xbox Ally | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. ASUS listing price, checked Aug. 18, 2026 | $599.99 | $999.99 |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen Z2 A | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Memory | 16GB LPDDR5-6400 | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 |
| Storage | 512GB M.2 2280 SSD | 1TB M.2 2280 SSD |
| Battery capacity | 60Wh | 80Wh |
| Display | 7-inch 1080p IPS, 120Hz, 500 nits | 7-inch 1080p IPS, 120Hz, 500 nits |
| Operating system | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Home |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 | Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 |
The standard model suits buyers focused on price, lighter games, or a mix of indie and moderately demanding titles. Its 16GB of memory, Ryzen Z2 A processor and 60Wh battery are real differences from the X—not just a smaller SSD. Choose it with the expectation that newer demanding games may need lower settings or resolution.

The X is the choice for people who play demanding games more often, want 1TB of built-in storage, or value the larger battery and additional memory. At the U.S. ASUS prices above, it costs $400 more; whether that premium is worthwhile depends on how often you use its extra headroom. Xbox says the X adds impulse triggers. For model-specific specifications, see Xbox’s product listing and ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X page.
Performance: capable PC gaming, not a 120-fps promise
Both handhelds have a 1080p, 120Hz screen, but refresh rate is not a guarantee that a game will render at 120 frames per second. Performance varies with the game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, drivers and whether the handheld is plugged in. Demanding games may call for reduced settings, lower resolution or upscaling; lighter games are better candidates for high frame rates.
ASUS claims up to 20% better performance for the standard model than the original ROG Ally, and up to 30% for the X than the previous ROG Ally X in selected tests. These are manufacturer results under selected conditions, not universal gains across games. Frame-generation features such as AMD Fluid Motion Frames can make motion appear smoother, but generated frames are not the same as natively rendered frames and may bring artifacts or added latency.
Independent results illustrate why a single benchmark should not be treated as a general forecast. Tom’s Hardware reported 64 fps plugged in and 79 fps unplugged in its specific Shadow of the Tomb Raider test at 720p; that result does not predict performance in other games or at 1080p. Tom’s Hardware’s review provides the test context.

Battery life: capacity helps, but game choice matters
The standard Ally has a 60Wh battery and the X an 80Wh battery. Both offer power profiles ranging from Silent to Performance and Turbo-style operation. Higher power can improve performance, but it also increases heat, fan activity and battery use. Screen brightness, frame-rate caps, resolution and the game itself affect runtime too.
ASUS claims up to 110% more battery life for the standard model than the original ROG Ally, and up to twice the battery life for the X than the previous ROG Ally X in specified tests. Those are test-specific manufacturer comparisons, not a promise of a fixed number of hours. Independent Windows Central testing reported about 1 hour 53 minutes in a Cyberpunk 2077 test on the X at 25W, and about 5 hours 6 minutes in Celeste at a 13W Silent setting. Its standard Ally review reported about 1 hour 48 minutes in a Cyberpunk 2077 test at 20W. These results apply to those test setups, not every user or game. See Windows Central’s X review and its standard Ally review.
Light games and streaming can be much gentler on the battery than demanding AAA titles, but neither model should be treated as an all-day device for high-end gaming away from a charger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Display, controls and portability
Both models use a 7-inch 1080p IPS touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate, and 500-nit brightness. ASUS also lists Gorilla Glass protection and an anti-reflection treatment. The 16:9 panel is well suited to many games and video, but it is not as tall as a 16:10 display, and IPS does not deliver OLED’s contrast or black levels. At this size, 1080p can also be demanding for new AAA games.

The contoured, textured grips and familiar Xbox-style layout are intended for handheld comfort. The controls include sticks, triggers, bumpers and programmable rear buttons; the X adds impulse triggers according to Xbox’s launch information. Both models list Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. The standard model’s weight is approximately 670g in ASUS product-guide material; a comparable X weight is not stated in the cited specifications, so don’t assume the two feel identical. For a larger screen, docked play, or external peripherals, the Windows PC foundation offers more flexibility than a conventional console handheld.
Storage and upgrades
The standard model’s 512GB SSD can feel tight after Windows and several large games take their share. The X starts at 1TB, which is more comfortable but not unlimited. ASUS says the standard model supports storage expansion through an off-the-shelf SSD. Before replacing a drive, make a recovery plan and preserve any data you need.
MicroSD expansion is another option, particularly for a library of smaller or less demanding games. Card performance varies, so verify speed and compatibility rather than assuming every game will perform like it does from the internal SSD.
Who should buy each model?
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if
- You want Xbox mode and Windows storefront flexibility at the lower U.S. listing price.
- Your library leans toward indies, older games, esports or moderately demanding titles.
- You are comfortable reducing settings or resolution in demanding games.
- You value the shared 7-inch VRR display and familiar controller layout more than maximum performance.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if
- You frequently play demanding AAA games and want the stronger of the two configurations.
- You want 24GB of memory, 1TB of storage and an 80Wh battery.
- Longer sessions matter enough to justify the additional cost, while recognizing that high-demand games can still drain it quickly.
- You expect to use it with a dock or peripherals as well as in handheld mode.
Consider another device—or keep your current Ally—if
- You want a simple console-like experience with minimal Windows maintenance, or your library is overwhelmingly Steam-based and you prefer SteamOS. The Steam Deck OLED is a better fit for that combination, though Windows-only launchers, Game Pass PC and some anti-cheat games can be less straightforward on it.
- You want a larger screen or detachable controllers and are willing to accept a larger Windows handheld; the Lenovo Legion Go line is an alternative, with configuration-dependent trade-offs.
- You already own the previous ROG Ally X and are considering an upgrade mainly for raw frame rates. The new software experience, memory, storage and platform features may matter, but ASUS’s selected-test performance claim is not a guarantee of a large gain in every game.
- You expect every Xbox console game to run locally, want an OLED screen, or mainly play demanding AAA titles away from power.
Xbox advertises three months of Game Pass Premium with either model and describes it as almost $45 of value. The offer is time-sensitive; check the current Xbox product page for terms, availability and catalog details. The subscription does not change the distinction between locally installed PC games and streamed console titles.
