To speed up a Fortnite update, first check Epic’s service status and connection guidance, stop other downloads and streams, and use Ethernet or stronger Wi-Fi. Restart the router and device, then check storage. On PC, also make sure Epic Games Launcher is not limiting download speed. If the network rate falls to 0 MB/s, check for disk activity before cancelling: the launcher may be installing or processing files rather than being stuck.
Try these fixes first on any device
- Check whether Epic’s services are having trouble. If a major update has just launched or Epic reports an incident, your connection may be fine and local changes may have little effect. Wait and try again later rather than reinstalling Fortnite.
- Stop competing network traffic. Pause other game downloads, operating-system updates, cloud backups, large browser downloads, streams, peer-to-peer apps, and bandwidth-heavy activity on other devices. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy as a test; it can interfere with the connection, though results vary.
- Try Ethernet, or improve Wi-Fi. A wired connection is usually a more stable test than weak or congested Wi-Fi. If you cannot connect by cable, move closer to the router and try another available Wi-Fi band. Which band works best depends on distance, interference, and your router and device.
- Restart the network and device. Shut down the Fortnite device, unplug the modem and router for about one minute, reconnect the modem and wait for it to stabilize, then reconnect the router and restart the device.
- Check available storage. Leave substantially more free space than the displayed patch size. Updates may need room to download, unpack, compare, and apply files; requirements vary by platform and patch.
Epic recommends trying a different connection, using Ethernet, restarting network equipment, and checking for proxy or connection problems in its slow-download troubleshooting guidance and connection troubleshooting article.
PC: Fix downloads in Epic Games Launcher
Remove the launcher’s download limit
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings and scroll to Download Settings.
- Uncheck Limit Download Speeds, then restart the launcher and resume the update.
Some launcher versions also offer a route through Download Manager in the lower-left corner, then Download Settings and Download Speed. Disable Limit download speeds if that option appears. Labels and locations can vary by version. See Epic’s instructions for changing the download-speed limit and its guidance for the IS-INFO-THROTTLED message.
Update the launcher and inspect disk activity
Open the profile menu, select Settings, and choose RESTART AND UPDATE if it appears. If download speed repeatedly reaches zero while disk activity rises, wait for file processing to finish. Epic notes that the launcher can pause network downloading while it writes files to disk; see its explanation of downloads dropping to 0 MB/s.

On Windows, Task Manager can show whether the drive is busy. Installing on a fast internal SSD may shorten file installation and processing, but it does not increase your internet connection’s download capacity. Avoid force-closing the launcher while it is actively applying files.
Clear the launcher cache if it is malfunctioning
On Windows, exit Epic Games Launcher completely, including from the system tray. Press Windows + R, enter %localappdata%, and open EpicGamesLauncherSaved. Delete any of these folders that are present: webcache, webcache_4147, and webcache_4430. Relaunch the launcher.
On macOS, quit the launcher, open Finder’s Go > Go to Folder, and enter ~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher. Delete the folder containing webcache, empty the Trash if necessary, and relaunch. Epic’s instructions cover clearing the launcher cache.

Verify Fortnite files after repeated errors
If the update repeatedly fails or reports corrupted data, open the Epic Games Library, find Fortnite, select its three-dot menu, choose Manage, then Verify. This checks and repairs game files; it is not a general download-speed booster. Follow Epic’s file verification instructions.

Check network and security settings cautiously
If other steps fail, test with a different connection and temporarily disable a proxy or VPN. Epic also lists DNS troubleshooting and firewall checks. DNS changes may help resolve a connection problem or a particular route, but they do not normally increase the capacity of your internet service and are not guaranteed to improve Fortnite speeds. Avoid permanently disabling antivirus or firewall protection; update security software or allow Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite through the firewall instead. Epic’s connection guidance and ESP error troubleshooting cover related checks. Its 10 GB free-space figure applies to certain PC troubleshooting errors, not as a universal minimum for every Fortnite update.

If it is slow or stuck
- Pause other downloads and close games or media apps that are using the network.
- Try Ethernet, restart the console and router, and confirm there is enough free storage.
- Check Epic and PlayStation service status, especially during a new patch release.
- If the update reports corrupted data, use the console’s repair or reinstall procedure instead of repeatedly forcing the same failed download.
Rest-mode download settings differ between PS4 and PS5 and can change with system software, so use the instructions for your console rather than assuming one universal menu path. Epic’s Fortnite technical-support index includes platform-specific stuck-update and corrupted-data topics.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: Improve the connection and update manually
Check for the update
- Connect the console to the internet and open the Home menu.
- Highlight Fortnite and press the + or − button.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
Epic provides these steps in its Fortnite update instructions.
Test Wi-Fi and wired options
For a Wi-Fi test, Nintendo recommends moving the console to within about 10–15 feet of the router and reducing network use by other devices. A supported wired adapter can be another test where applicable; Nintendo notes that Switch Lite may use a licensed compatible USB LAN adapter. See Nintendo’s slow-download guidance.
If a download will not progress
Confirm the console is online, restart it, let it reconnect, and retry the update. These are Nintendo’s steps for a stuck software download. Avoid deleting Fortnite as an early fix: reinstalling may require downloading the full game.

Android: Use the official update channel for your installation
Depending on how Fortnite was installed and your device or region, updates may come through Epic Games Launcher or an app store. If installed through Epic Games Launcher, connect to the internet, open the app, select Fortnite, and select Update. If installed through Google Play, use the Play Store’s normal app-update process. Epic lists the available routes in its update instructions.
- Use stable Wi-Fi, keep the device connected to power for a large update, and leave internal storage free.
- Pause other app updates and temporarily test without a VPN or proxy.
- Restart the device and, if the update is stuck, clear the cache for the relevant official store or launcher.
- Samsung devices and other Android models may have different security settings and distribution routes. Check Epic’s current Fortnite FAQ for availability and installation details.
Do not use unofficial APK mirrors; they create security and authenticity risks without being a reliable speed fix.
iPhone and iPad: Check regional availability and the installation route
Fortnite availability and update procedures on iPhone and iPad depend on region and distribution channel. Do not assume the App Store route applies to every location or installation. Check Epic’s current availability information and update through the official channel used to install the game.
- Use strong Wi-Fi, connect the device to power, and free internal storage.
- Pause other large downloads and restart the device if the update is not progressing.
- Check that the Fortnite installation method is supported in your region before troubleshooting an update that is not offered.
Why an update can look frozen
Download, installation, and verification are different stages
Download speed measures data arriving over the network. Installation can involve unpacking, comparing, rewriting, or applying files, while verification checks existing files. On PC, Epic specifically says the launcher can stop downloading temporarily while writing files to disk. If network speed reaches 0 MB/s, look for disk activity and allow it to finish before cancelling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPatch size is not always the space or time required
An update may download compressed data, then unpack or rewrite files and reserve temporary space. Some updates genuinely require substantial file replacement; an unexpectedly large update is not automatically an error. Epic’s verification and file-size guidance also addresses cases where reported sizes can be affected by communication errors.
Speed-test results do not guarantee Epic’s download rate
Internet plans are commonly advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), while game launchers often show megabytes per second (MB/s). Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, 100 Mbps works out to a theoretical maximum of about 12.5 MB/s before overhead. Actual Fortnite rates can be lower because of Wi-Fi conditions, network overhead, congestion, server performance, or device processing. A speed test measures the connection to its own test service, not the rate Epic or a platform store will deliver.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step from the symptom
| What you see | Possible bottleneck | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Other downloads are slow too | Home network, ISP, or competing traffic | Pause other traffic, test Ethernet, and restart the router. |
| Only Fortnite is slow | Epic or platform delivery route, launcher setting, or file processing | Check service status; on PC, remove the launcher speed limit and inspect disk activity. |
| Speed alternates between downloading and zero | File installation or processing | Check disk activity and wait before cancelling. |
| Update will not start | Store, launcher, account, service, or network issue | Restart the launcher or device, check status, and confirm the connection. |
| Update repeatedly fails | Storage, cache or file problem, proxy, firewall, or connection | Check storage and network settings; clear launcher cache or verify files on PC. |
| Hotspot is faster than home Wi-Fi | Home router, Wi-Fi environment, ISP route, or congestion | Troubleshoot the home network; account for mobile-data limits before using a hotspot. |
| Console reports insufficient storage | Local storage constraint | Free space before considering reinstalling. |
| Mobile update is unavailable | Region, device, or distribution channel | Check Epic’s official availability and installation information. |
When to wait, retry, or reinstall
- Wait if Epic reports an incident, a new patch is drawing heavy demand, or PC disk activity shows files being processed.
- Retry after a restart when service status is normal but the update will not begin.
- Clear cache or verify files on PC if the launcher misbehaves or reports repeated file errors.
- Contact the platform or ISP if service status or a comparison with another connection points to a console service or home-network issue.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. It can replace a small patch with a full-game download, so try less disruptive checks first.
