Fortnite returned to Google Play worldwide on March 19, 2026, Epic said. Android players can install it from Google Play or from the Epic Games Store; the comeback followed a settlement resolving Epic and Google’s disputes after years of litigation over app distribution and payments.
Quick answer: Search for Fortnite in Google Play and choose the official listing, or install it through Epic’s own Android store. Epic describes the Play return as worldwide, though a particular device, account, or region may still affect whether the listing appears. Epic’s announcement and current Android instructions are available at Fortnite’s return announcement and Epic’s Android download guide.

Why Fortnite disappeared from Google Play
Google removed Fortnite from the Play Store in August 2020 after Epic introduced an in-app payment option that bypassed Google Play Billing. Google treated the change as a breach of its distribution terms. Epic sued, arguing that Google’s control over Android app distribution and in-app billing limited competition.
The dispute concerned two connected markets: getting Android apps to users and processing purchases inside those apps. The Ninth Circuit’s account of the case describes the jury’s findings that Google unlawfully maintained monopoly power, restrained trade, and tied Play Store distribution to Google Play Billing. The court opinion also describes a 30% commission during the conduct at issue; that figure is historical context, not a statement of Google’s current fee schedule. Read the Ninth Circuit opinion.

How the court battle led to the return
The return was not simply Google changing its mind or a court directly ordering Fortnite’s reinstatement. Epic won a major antitrust case, Google faced court-ordered changes, and the companies later negotiated a broader settlement.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 2020 | Google removed Fortnite from Google Play after Epic bypassed Google’s required billing system. |
| December 11, 2023 | A jury returned a unanimous verdict for Epic on the relevant Google antitrust claims. |
| October 7, 2024 | The district court entered a permanent injunction requiring changes to Google Play. |
| July 31, 2025 | The Ninth Circuit affirmed the verdict and injunction. |
| March 4, 2026 | Google and Epic announced a settlement and sought a revised injunction. |
| March 19, 2026 | Epic announced Fortnite’s worldwide return to Google Play. |
The settlement is a negotiated resolution following litigation, not evidence that Epic prevailed on every demand. The full terms were not all public in the initial reporting. Google described its changes as a redesigned Android business model; Epic presented them as a gain for developer choice. Those are the companies’ respective characterizations, not neutral descriptions of every practical outcome. Associated Press reporting on the settlement.

What Google’s changes mean for app stores and developers
Google’s announced changes cover developer fees, billing choices, and distribution of rival app stores. They do not mean that every developer gets one identical rate everywhere or that all provisions took effect at once.
- Service fees and billing: Google described a new fee structure that separates its Play service fee from charges for using Google Play Billing. For in-app purchases from new installs in the United States, European Economic Area, and United Kingdom, Google set a 20% service fee under the new structure, plus a 5% billing charge when a developer chooses Google Play Billing. Google described a 10% service fee for recurring subscriptions. Some developers in its Apps Experience Program or Play Games Level Up program may qualify for lower rates.
- Alternative stores: Google announced a Registered App Stores program intended to make approved rival stores easier to distribute. Eligibility and safety requirements remain; the change is not unrestricted access for every store or download source.
- United States rollout: Google’s policy page says catalog access and third-party app-store distribution provisions took effect July 22, 2026. It says relevant reporting and fees for alternative payments begin October 1, 2026.
These are developer-side rules, not automatic consumer discounts. A lower or differently structured fee does not, by itself, establish that V-Bucks or other purchases cost less. The terms and rollout details are set out in Google’s announcement of its new Android model and its Google Play policy update.

How to install Fortnite on Android
Install from Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Fortnite and check that you have selected the official listing before installing.
- Download the app and open it from your device as usual.
If the listing does not appear, availability may depend on your device, account, or Play Store configuration. Avoid similarly named apps and unofficial APK downloads. Epic’s official listing can also be reached from its Android page.
Install from the Epic Games Store
- In a mobile browser, open Epic’s official mobile store page.
- Download and install the Epic Games app.
- Open the Epic Games app and install Fortnite from there.
- If Android asks, allow installation from unknown sources for the Epic app installation.
This route installs Fortnite outside Google Play, so use Epic’s own site rather than a third-party APK host. The Android permission prompt is part of installing an app from outside Play; it is not a reason to trust downloads from unknown sites.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

If Fortnite is already installed from Epic
Epic says existing users can update through the original Epic Games Store installation or reinstall through Google Play. Follow Epic’s current instructions rather than assuming you should install a second copy over the first. Its guidance is at Epic’s Google Play instructions for existing installations.

| Your priority | Starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar, straightforward installation | Google Play | Use the official listing and standard Play Store installation and management flow. |
| Installing directly from Epic instead of Google Play | Epic Games Store | Download from Epic’s official page; Android may ask you to permit installation from outside Play. |
| Already playing through Epic’s Android store | Usually keep using the original source | Epic supports updating there; reinstall through Google Play only if that suits you, and avoid duplicate installations unless you have checked the implications. |
| Checking payment options or Epic Rewards | Review the checkout screen in your region | Payment methods and rewards can differ by country and distribution channel. Neither route establishes a lower consumer price in advance. |
Epic’s return announcement says players can receive 20% back in Epic Rewards when using Epic’s payment system. At the time of that announcement, Epic identified this option for Google Play checkout in the United States; it described availability globally on iOS, the web, or PC through the Epic Games Store, and said it was working to bring the option to Google Play globally. “20% back” refers to rewards, not necessarily an immediate 20% price reduction. Check the current regional checkout and reward terms before buying.

The available official information establishes the distribution options and payment-policy distinctions, not a difference in graphics, frame rate, performance, or update timing between Android installations. Epic’s Google Play return also does not imply an equivalent worldwide return to Apple’s App Store: the Google and Apple cases proceeded separately, and Fortnite’s status on Apple devices is a separate question.
What the settlement changes—and what it does not
For Android players, the immediate practical change is a familiar Google Play installation option alongside Epic’s existing direct route. For developers and rival stores, the settlement and Google’s policy changes may lower barriers to alternative billing and distribution, but their effect depends on eligibility, geography, and rollout. It is too early to treat the announced fee model as a universal rate or to assume the changes will automatically reduce game prices.
Google retains safety and program requirements for rival stores, and the court process, settlement announcement, policy changes, and live availability are related but distinct developments. Nor does Fortnite’s return settle the separate Apple dispute. For most players who simply want to reinstall, the official Google Play listing is the easiest starting point; players who prefer Epic’s direct distribution can use Epic’s official Android store.
