MTG Arena Crashing or Freezing on iPhone and iPad: What to Check

Players report MTG Arena crashes and freezes on iPhone and iPad, but that does not confirm a platform-wide outage. Check status, compatibility, updates and connection before reinstalling.

MTG Arena players have reported crashes, freezes, failed updates and trouble rejoining matches on iPhone and iPad, including after client updates. Those reports do not establish a confirmed iOS- or iPadOS-wide outage. Check the official status and known-issues pages first, then narrow the problem by symptom: a crash, a network stall, an update mismatch and a match-rejoin failure are not the same issue.

What iPhone and iPad players are reporting

Wizards’ mobile support page recognizes crashing, freezing and trouble starting Arena as mobile performance problems. Players have also described matches freezing after updates and needing to restart the game to play again. These are player reports, not independently measured crash-rate data, so they show that people are encountering problems without proving a single cause. Wizards’ mobile troubleshooting guidance and player reports on the feedback portal provide the relevant context.

  • Crash: Arena closes or returns to the Home Screen.
  • Freeze: The app stays open but stops responding.
  • Soft lock: A menu or match remains visible, but an action does not complete.
  • Connection stall: The client may appear frozen while waiting for a network response.
  • Update mismatch: Arena says an update is required, but the App Store offers only “Open.”
  • Loading or rejoin failure: The game hangs retrieving data, or relaunching does not restore an ongoing match.

A store error, deck-builder problem or inability to rejoin can have different causes from an app closing unexpectedly. Note exactly where the failure occurs before choosing a fix.

Check whether the problem is an outage or a local issue

A crash on one device does not, by itself, mean Arena’s servers are down. Check MTG Arena’s service-status page, the official Known Issues List, and recent patch notes. Search or review the Wizards feedback portal for similar reports. A status page is most useful when checked at the time the problem occurs; a past status snapshot cannot confirm what is happening now.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Wizards’ January 6, 2026 known-issues list included mobile and iOS defects, including battlefield or rejoin problems, deck-builder issues and a store error. It did not list a general iPhone or iPad crash-and-freeze outage in that release snapshot. That dated list is not an all-clear for later releases.

  • If Arena will not launch, check app and operating-system updates, compatibility and storage.
  • If it opens but hangs while loading or logging in, check the service status and compare network connections.
  • If only a match freezes, record the game state and whether the client responds before assuming the opponent or servers are at fault.
  • If the App Store will not offer an update Arena demands, treat that as a separate update mismatch.

Check iPhone and iPad compatibility

The current App Store listing requires iOS 15.0 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 15.0 or later on iPad. It lists the app at about 1.3 GB; store size and requirements can vary by storefront or version. Wizards changed Arena’s minimum iOS version to iOS 15 in its October 6, 2025 patch notes. Older pages citing iOS 14.1 are historical, not the current baseline.

Wizards’ supported-device guidance gives examples such as iPhone 8, X, XS, XR, 11 and 12; iPad mini (5th generation); iPad (8th generation); iPad Air (3rd and 4th generation); and 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models of the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th generations, respectively. Wizards says this list is not comprehensive: an unlisted model is not automatically unsupported. Its memory and graphics specifications are not an Apple-specific checklist for everyday iPhone or iPad troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot in order

  1. Check for a reported incident. Look at the service-status page, Known Issues List and current patch notes before changing the app.
  2. Update Arena and iOS or iPadOS. Check the App Store for an Arena update and install the latest operating-system update available for the device. Wizards recommends keeping both current.
  3. Check storage and update availability. The App Store lists Arena at about 1.3 GB, but Wizards does not specify a minimum amount of free space. If Arena says an update is required while the store shows “Open,” refresh the listing, fully close and reopen the App Store, restart the device, and check again. Players have reported this exact mismatch on the feedback portal; these steps are not guaranteed to resolve it. If it persists, take screenshots and report the mismatch rather than assuming reinstalling will fix App Store availability.
  4. Compare connections. Try another Wi-Fi network or, where available, cellular data or a temporary hotspot. Wizards recommends checking the connection and toggling Wi-Fi off and on; its mobile connection guidance also recommends Wi-Fi where available. If the failure changes between networks, that points toward a connection-specific issue but does not prove the client is otherwise fault-free.
  5. Reduce background activity and restart. Force-close Arena, close other background apps, restart the iPhone or iPad, and try again with fewer apps open. Avoid repeatedly switching between apps during a match while testing.
  6. Reinstall only after checking account access. Wizards lists uninstalling and reinstalling as an option for mobile performance problems. Before doing so, make sure you know the correct account credentials and can use the intended login method. The download is substantial, and reinstalling cannot fix a server-side incident, a broken release or an incompatible device.

These are troubleshooting recommendations, not guaranteed fixes. If the same failure persists on a supported device after updates, a restart and a connection comparison, record the details and report it rather than repeating the same steps indefinitely.

If Arena freezes during a match

A nonresponsive screen can be a local freeze or a client waiting on a connection; it is not proof that the opponent is deliberately stalling. If safe to do so, note the details before closing the app. Wizards’ known-issues history has included a mobile battlefield problem after rejoining an ongoing match, so a rejoin failure should be reported as such rather than automatically labeled a crash.

  • Device model, iOS or iPadOS version, and Arena version.
  • Wi-Fi or cellular connection and whether another network changed the result.
  • Game mode, turn and phase, and the card, animation or battlefield interaction immediately before the problem.
  • Whether the app closed, remained open but unresponsive, or showed a connection/loading state.
  • Whether the issue also happens in menus, and whether relaunching restores the match.

Wizards says it does not recommend competing in Magic esports events on mobile and places responsibility for gameplay or connection problems on players who do. For a high-stakes event, a mobile device carries that stated risk.

Report a reproducible problem to Wizards

  1. Follow Wizards’ bug-report instructions and search the bug-title field for an existing report.
  2. If a report matches, vote for it and add a comment with your device, OS and Arena versions, connection type, symptom and reproduction details.
  3. If there is no matching report, submit a new one with the same information and the exact steps leading to the failure.
  4. For a crash that needs diagnostic files, use Wizards’ support documentation for creating log files on iOS; follow its iOS-specific instructions rather than PC or Mac steps.

The feedback portal is for bugs, product feedback and suggestions. For account, payment or login problems, use Wizards customer support rather than treating the issue as a game-bug report.
