If error 0x87e00064 appears while you install or update a game through the Xbox app on Windows 10, troubleshoot it as a PC installation problem—not as an Xbox One console fault. The code alone does not identify one confirmed cause: the failure may involve the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, your account, the installation drive, or download delivery.
Start with a Windows restart, account and update checks, then the Store cache reset. Move to app repair and Gaming Services recovery only if those low-risk steps fail. The instructions below apply to Windows 10 PCs; if the code appears on an Xbox One console, these PC steps are not the right procedure.
First confirm where the error occurs
“Xbox One” refers to a console family, but this article covers the Xbox app and Microsoft Store on a Windows 10 PC. Note whether the code appears during a new installation, a game update, a repair or reinstall, or when launching a game. Also note whether it affects one title or every Xbox game.
- Xbox app or Microsoft Store on Windows: follow the PC troubleshooting steps below.
- Xbox One console: do not apply PowerShell or Windows app instructions to the console; use Xbox console support.
- One title only: check that game’s availability, storage needs, and installation location before removing platform components.
- Every Store app or Xbox game: investigate the Store, account, or shared gaming services rather than assuming one game is damaged.
Microsoft does not provide a definitive code-specific Windows explanation in the guidance cited here. Treat 0x87e00064 as a game-installation failure, not proof that the cache, network, or any single component is at fault.

Try the low-risk fixes first
Restart Windows and retry
- Close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store.
- Restart the PC from Start > Power > Restart.
- Open the Xbox app and retry the installation or update.
A restart can complete a pending Windows update; Microsoft notes that one may be required before Store apps can install. See Microsoft’s Microsoft Store installation guidance.
Check sign-in and game entitlement
- Sign in to both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, preferably with the same Microsoft account.
- Confirm that the account owns the game or currently has the relevant Game Pass entitlement. If you use more than one Microsoft account, verify which one holds the purchase or subscription.
- Avoid switching accounts while an installation is in progress.
- If the Store says the game is unavailable, check account authorization, regional availability, and compatibility; these can affect whether Store content can be installed.

Install pending updates
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install pending updates. Restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Microsoft Store and go to Library or, on some versions, Downloads and updates.
- Install pending updates for Xbox, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, and Xbox Identity Provider if listed.
- Restart Windows, then retry the game.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache
Use the built-in Store cache reset before removing apps or packages. It does not delete the installed game files, but it also does not reinstall Gaming Services or guarantee a fix for every instance of this error.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close. Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Sign in if prompted and retry the download.
Microsoft documents that wsreset.exe resets the Store cache and opens the Store afterward: Microsoft Store installation guidance. If the Store does not open, or is disabled on a managed PC, do not repeatedly run the command; continue with the app checks below or contact your administrator.
Repair Xbox, Store, or Gaming Services
On Windows 10, try Repair before Reset. The Settings path is Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > [app] > Advanced options. Select an app from the list, then choose Repair. If that does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset.

- Repair Xbox first, then retry the install.
- If the problem continues, repair Microsoft Store and Gaming Services if they appear in the app list.
- Repair Xbox Identity Provider if it is listed and the problem persists.
- Use Reset only after Repair fails, then restart Windows and sign in again if asked.
Repair attempts to fix an app without removing its data. Reset clears stored app data and may remove local settings or queue state and require sign-in again; do not assume every app preference will be preserved. Microsoft describes the Repair-before-Reset approach through Advanced options in its Windows app troubleshooting guidance. Windows 10 menu labels can vary across releases.
Repair Gaming Services if Xbox games still fail
Gaming Services is a dependency for Xbox app and PC Game Pass installs. If the Xbox app opens but Xbox games will not install, use the Xbox app’s Gaming Services repair option if it is available. The exact support or settings route can vary by Xbox app version.

- Open the Xbox app and look in its support or settings area for the Gaming Services repair option.
- Run the repair and restart Windows.
- Retry the game installation.
Advanced fallback: remove and reinstall Gaming Services
Use this only if the repair option is unavailable or does not work. The removal command is elevated and removes a Windows app package; it is more disruptive than repairing an app. The sequence below is documented in Microsoft-hosted community guidance for Windows gaming services: Gaming Services recovery guidance. Although that guidance is for Windows 11, package state and Store behavior may differ on Windows 10.

- Search Start for Windows PowerShell, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers- Restart the PC.
- Open the Gaming Services Store listing by running this command in PowerShell, or search for Gaming Services in Microsoft Store:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN- Install Gaming Services from the Store page, then restart Windows again.
- Retry the game installation.
If PowerShell reports that Gaming Services is not installed, do not repeat the removal command; try opening the Store listing and installing the package. The Store link may not work if Store is unavailable, blocked by an organization, or disabled. Do not remove unrelated Xbox packages or promise that this procedure preserves every game’s local state; check your library and install locations afterward.

If Microsoft Store and Gaming Services are working but the Xbox app remains broken, reinstalling the app is a later step, not the first fix. It can clear app state and require you to sign in again. - Open Windows PowerShell as administrator.
- Run:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.XboxApp | remove-AppxPackage -allusers- Open the Xbox app Store listing with:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MV0B5HZVK9Z- Install the app, sign in, and check that your library and intended game installation location are visible before retrying the game.
If Microsoft Store cannot open, this reinstall route is unavailable until the Store problem is resolved. Do not remove other packages based on guesses about their names.

Check the drive and download connection
Verify the installation location
- Confirm the target drive is connected, online, and has enough free space for the download, update, and temporary installation work.
- If a secondary or external drive is failing, try the default system drive if it has sufficient space. Check the Xbox app’s installation settings to confirm the selected location is available.
- Do not manually delete protected
WindowsApps,WpSystem, orXboxGamesfolders, take ownership of them, or broadly change their permissions. Those actions can create more Store installation problems and are not a supported general fix for this code.
Test for a delivery or network issue
- Pause and resume the download once.
- If other services are failing too, restart the router. Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or proxy, or test another network if practical.
- If the Xbox app and Store otherwise work and only one title fails, wait and retry later; a delivery or title-specific issue is possible, but the code does not establish that as the cause.
- Check the official Xbox service status before repeatedly reinstalling apps or packages.
These are diagnostic tests, not a claim that network trouble is the confirmed explanation for 0x87e00064.
Use the pattern of failures to choose the next step

To isolate a title-specific failure, try another free Microsoft Store app and another Xbox game if available. If the game can be obtained through Microsoft Store and the Xbox app queue alone appears stuck, trying the Store route is a reasonable test; it is not a guaranteed workaround.
When to stop and contact Microsoft
If the ordered steps do not help, record the exact code and where it appears, the game title, whether it is an install, update, or launch failure, and which steps you have tried. To capture the Windows version, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note the edition and build. Include Xbox app and Gaming Services versions if available, plus a screenshot of the error.
Contact Microsoft Support for persistent Store, entitlement, or platform-wide failures. On a school- or work-managed PC, an administrator may control Store access or package installation. Microsoft also directs users to support when Store troubleshooting does not resolve an installation problem: Microsoft Store installation guidance. Avoid escalating to a Windows reset, registry cleaner, unofficial repair utility, DLL download, or permanent antivirus disablement for this error.
