How to Fix “Unsupported Security Settings” on Nintendo Switch

The Switch’s unsupported-security message can mean more than a bad password. Set a compatible WPA2-AES network, reconnect the saved profile, and isolate router, band, or public Wi-Fi issues.

The “unsupported security settings” message does not necessarily mean your Wi-Fi password is wrong. On Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, it can mean the router is using an incompatible security mode. The most reliable fix is to set the Wi-Fi network to WPA2-Personal (WPA2-PSK) with AES/CCMP, then remove the saved network from the console and connect again.

Quick fix

  1. In your router’s app or administration page, open the Wi-Fi or wireless security settings. Set the network to WPA2-Personal or WPA2-PSK with AES or CCMP. Avoid WPA3-only and TKIP modes.
  2. Save the router setting and let its Wi-Fi restart. If you change security settings, other devices may need to reconnect.
  3. On the Switch, open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings. Under Registered Networks, select the affected network and choose Delete Settings.
  4. Select the network from the available list, enter its password exactly as configured on the router, and run the connection test.

Router menu names vary by manufacturer. If your router cannot create a WPA2-AES network, see whether it can provide a separate compatible guest or IoT SSID; do not leave the main network open or on WEP as a permanent workaround.

What the message means

Nintendo’s message identifies two likely causes: the password or selected security type may be wrong, or the access point may use a security configuration the console does not support. A typo is only one possibility. WPA3-only, WPA/TKIP, WPA2/TKIP, enterprise authentication, and some router or mesh compatibility modes can also prevent a connection. A saved profile with a mismatched security type can produce a similar result.

Nintendo classifies error codes 2110-2000 through 2110-2899 as connection problems that occur while the console initially connects to a router, often before it receives an IP address. That points to the local Wi-Fi connection, not necessarily DNS, NAT, or Nintendo’s online services. Nintendo’s connection-error guidance explains this error range.

Which Switch models support which Wi-Fi security?

Console Wireless security listed by Nintendo
Nintendo Switch WEP, WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES)
Nintendo Switch Lite WEP, WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES)
Nintendo Switch OLED Model WEP, WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES)
Nintendo Switch 2 WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES), WPA3-SAE (AES); WEP is unsupported

Nintendo’s current compatibility information distinguishes the original Switch family from Switch 2. Do not assume a WPA3-only network compatible with Switch 2 will also work with an original Switch, Switch Lite, or OLED model. See Nintendo’s Switch wireless-network specifications, Switch 2 compatibility information, and security-settings guidance.

The original Switch family supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, along with 802.11b/g/n/ac modes. Support for a band does not guarantee that every router channel, security configuration, or mesh setup will work. Nintendo’s internet connection FAQ covers supported frequencies.

Check and change the router’s security mode

  1. Use a phone or computer connected to the home network to open the router manufacturer’s app or administration page.
  2. Find Wi-Fi, Wireless, Security, or SSID settings for the network the Switch is joining.
  3. Choose WPA2-Personal or WPA2-PSK and explicitly select AES or CCMP if the router offers an encryption choice.
  4. Save the setting and allow the router to reload its wireless network. Reconnect affected devices as needed.
  • Avoid WPA3-only for the original Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED models.
  • Avoid WPA/TKIP and WPA2/TKIP. “WPA2” alone is not enough if the router is actually using TKIP.
  • If the router offers a choice, avoid “AES/TKIP,” “WPA/WPA2,” or automatic mixed modes while troubleshooting; use a pure WPA2-AES option.
  • Enterprise or 802.1X security normally requires credentials or certificates beyond a shared Wi-Fi password and may not be usable without help from the network administrator.

Nintendo lists WPA-PSK (AES) and WPA2-PSK (AES) as compatible configurations and cites WPA-PSK (TKIP) as an incompatible example. See its wireless-network troubleshooting guidance.

Forget the network and reconnect on the Switch

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
  2. Under Registered Networks, select the affected network and choose Delete Settings. Alternatively, use Change Settings if you want to edit its saved details rather than remove the profile.
  3. Return to the available network list and select the SSID.
  4. Enter the password exactly, including capitalization and symbols, then run the connection test.

If you need to enter a profile manually, open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, select the manual or advanced setup option, and set Security to match the router. Nintendo’s listed labels are WEP (Open), WEP (Shared), WPA-PSK (AES), and WPA2-PSK (AES). Enter the matching password, choose OK, and test the connection. See Nintendo’s manual network setup instructions and connection troubleshooting steps.

If the router already says WPA2-AES

Verify the actual encryption

Some router interfaces show “WPA2” while offering TKIP, AES, or an automatic combination. Look for WPA2-Personal (AES), WPA2-PSK/AES, or WPA2-CCMP. If the router shows only a mixed setting, create a separate WPA2-AES network if possible.

Check WPA3 and transition modes

A router set to WPA3-only is not listed as compatible with the original Switch family by Nintendo. WPA2/WPA3 transition modes may work on some networks, but they are not guaranteed. A dedicated WPA2-AES SSID is the more predictable test when a Switch will not join a transition-mode network.

Test each Wi-Fi band

If the router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, temporarily separate the bands and try each SSID. This can reveal whether band steering or mesh roaming is affecting the connection. A successful connection on one band does not establish a fault with the other; signal, channel, security, and router behavior can differ.

Compare with a phone hotspot

Try connecting the Switch to a phone hotspot with a compatible security setting. If it connects there but not at home, the router or its configuration becomes the more likely source. If it cannot connect to any available network, investigate console software or hardware as well; the hotspot test alone does not prove the console is fault-free.

Update router firmware

Check the router manufacturer’s instructions for a firmware update. Nintendo also recommends contacting the router manufacturer about firmware or resetting router settings if the problem persists. Treat a full router reset as a last resort because it can erase the network name, password, and other configuration.

If the network is greyed out or missing

Network name is visible but greyed out

Nintendo says a greyed-out network name indicates that its wireless security type is not supported by the Switch. Check the router’s security and encryption settings rather than repeatedly entering the password. WPA3-only, TKIP, enterprise authentication, or an unusual compatibility mode may be responsible. See Nintendo’s guidance on networks the console cannot connect to.

Network name is not listed

  1. Move the console to within about 10 feet of the router for the initial test, then rescan.
  2. Confirm the router is broadcasting the SSID and that another device can see it in the same location.
  3. Test the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks separately if the router provides both.
  4. On mesh or dual-band systems, temporarily separate combined SSIDs and use explicit, compatible wireless settings.
  5. Restart the modem and router. Review unusual channel, isolation, or compatibility settings with the router manufacturer before changing them.

Nintendo recommends checking signal distance, SSID broadcast, security compatibility, and router configuration when a network cannot be found. Its network visibility troubleshooting page provides further checks.

Public, hotel, school, and workplace Wi-Fi

On a public network, the issue may be sign-in or access policy rather than home-router encryption. Hotels and hotspots may require a captive-portal page, device registration, or MAC-address authorization; schools and workplaces may use enterprise credentials, certificates, or 802.1X authentication. The Switch can connect to some networks that require a web sign-in, but compatibility depends on how the network is configured. Ask the network administrator whether game consoles are allowed and what connection method is required.

A guest network can be a useful way to give the Switch internet access without changing the main SSID. However, guest isolation may block communication with other devices on the home network, affecting local multiplayer or device discovery. If local connections matter, check the router’s guest-network isolation settings before relying on it.

Power-cycle the network and check the console

Restart the modem and router

  1. Unplug power from both the modem and router.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the modem and wait for its indicator lights to stabilize.
  4. Reconnect the router and wait for its indicator lights to stabilize.
  5. Retry the Switch connection.

This sequence is Nintendo’s recommended network power-cycle procedure for error 2110-2003. The code is associated with failure to connect to a wireless network; Nintendo also recommends restarting the console, re-entering the password, confirming security type, improving signal, trying another band, and checking router firmware. See Nintendo’s error 2110-2003 instructions.

Update the console

If the Switch can connect through another network, install any available system update through System Settings > System > System Update. Reports of this error appearing after a console update are user anecdotes, not proof that a particular update caused it. Nintendo’s recommended checks remain verifying network settings, restarting equipment, and testing the connection.

Decide whether the issue is network-specific

  • If a hotspot works but the home Wi-Fi does not, focus on the router, security mode, band, or network policy.
  • If only one band or one SSID fails, investigate that network’s settings and signal rather than resetting the console first.
  • If the Switch fails on multiple known-compatible networks after the console and router checks, contact Nintendo Support; a network reset or service assessment may be appropriate.

A compatible wired LAN adapter through a dock that supports wired networking can be an alternative for a home connection, but it does not fix the Wi-Fi configuration itself.

Should you use WEP or turn off Wi-Fi security?

Nintendo lists WEP as compatible with the original Switch family, but WEP is obsolete and insecure. It may serve as a temporary diagnostic test on an isolated network: if the Switch connects only after changing the security mode, that points toward a compatibility problem. Do not keep a home network on WEP or leave it open as the permanent solution. Restore secure settings and use WPA2-AES or a separate compatible SSID.
