Why 64GB needs a storage plan
SteamOS, game updates, shader caches, compatibility data and personal files all use space, so the capacity available for games is less than the nominal 64GB. A microSD card can add game storage without opening the Deck, but it does not increase internal capacity. Replacing the internal SSD is another option, but it adds parts, installation effort and the possibility of recovery or reinstallation work.
Compare the total cost of a 64GB unit plus any storage you expect to need—not just its advertised price—with a larger-capacity Deck. Current card and SSD prices are not established here. For internal-drive work, consult iFixit’s Steam Deck guides; only attempt an upgrade if you are comfortable opening the device and handling operating-system recovery.

The OLED is a more refined version of the Steam Deck experience, not a wholly different performance generation. The two models offer broadly similar game performance; OLED’s advantages are chiefly its screen, efficiency, battery capacity and wireless hardware. OLED’s contrast and black levels, larger screen and higher refresh-rate capability can make everyday play look and feel better. Its larger battery and more efficient hardware also suit unplugged play, but actual battery life varies with the game, brightness, frame-rate cap, power settings and wireless activity. Neither model has a universal playtime guarantee. Wi-Fi 6E can help only when the network and conditions support it.

When LCD makes sense
- You find a genuinely low-priced unit and prioritize the lowest entry cost over screen refinements.
- You mainly play indie, 2D, older or backlog games, or titles that suit the Deck’s performance envelope.
- You often play near a charger, or are buying a secondary handheld rather than a daily travel device.
- You are comfortable expanding storage or adjusting graphics settings.
The LCD Deck still provides access to a large Steam library through SteamOS and Proton, supports microSD expansion and can connect to an external monitor or TV. Its usefulness as hardware is distinct from whether a particular used, refurbished or remaining-stock listing is good value.

When OLED or another option is more compelling
- You will use the handheld frequently and value display quality, HDR or smoother motion.
- You regularly play away from power or want the larger battery and more efficient design.
- You expect to keep several large games installed and do not want to manage a 64GB starting capacity.
- A used or refurbished LCD listing is close enough in price to an OLED alternative that the LCD’s compromises no longer justify the savings.
For a used or refurbished LCD unit, assess its condition and the seller’s terms independently. Battery health, screen condition, storage, accessories, warranty and return rights can differ; a marketplace price is not a Valve price.

- Open Valve’s Steam Deck store and check the listing for your region.
- Confirm the exact model and storage capacity; do not assume a price applies to every configuration.
- Check whether the listing is new, refurbished or used, and identify the seller.
- Review shipping, taxes, warranty and return terms before comparing the final cost.
