How a Crypto Skeptic Is Making a Web3 Game—Without Starting With NFTs

Paul Bettner’s Wildcard began as a game, not an NFT sale. Its blockchain pitch, player-facing features, risks, and August 2026 development status show what the experiment still needs to prove.

Paul Bettner’s case for putting blockchain into Wildcard is unusual: the game came first. The veteran developer says Playful Studios spent years building a competitive arena game before adopting Web3, hoping the technology could connect players, spectators, creators, and digital collectibles more directly. That is a product thesis, not proof that blockchain improves the game—and as of August 18, 2026, official pages show continuing development rather than a confirmed full commercial launch.

Who is Paul Bettner?

Bettner is a longtime game developer whose career has included work on Age of Empires and other Microsoft projects, co-founding Newtoy—the studio behind Words With Friends—and later building Playful Studios. Newtoy was sold to Zynga. His background is in mainstream PC, mobile, and VR game development, not in launching crypto tokens as a starting point.

In a 2023 interview, Bettner described his career as a search for ways games can connect people. His interest in Web3 follows that thread: he presents blockchain as a possible tool for relationships around a game, rather than the reason the game should exist. GamesBeat’s interview with Bettner is the clearest account of that original argument.

What is Wildcard?

Wildcard is a player-versus-player arena game developed by The Wildcard Alliance, part of Playful Studios. In ordinary game terms, it combines real-time arena combat and MOBA-like objectives with collectible-card deckbuilding. Players choose champions with distinct abilities, build around summons or companion creatures, and fight in 2v2 matches. The objective is to outplay the opposing team, reach its goal, and destroy it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The studio also wants matches to make sense to people watching, not just those holding a controller. Playful describes the game as a blend of real-time strategy, arena-based MOBA play, and collectible-card games; the official game site calls it a PvP collectible-card-based arena action game. The intended result is both a competitive game and a spectator-friendly one. That ambition does not, by itself, show that the game has built a durable audience.

Why did a crypto skeptic choose blockchain?

Bettner’s explanation is not that he became an uncritical crypto advocate. He told GamesBeat that the team had been developing Wildcard for roughly five or six years before Web3 became central to the project, and that he remained skeptical of much of the crypto industry. His objection was to projects that begin with a token or NFT sale and try to invent a game around it afterward.

The team’s proposed problem was the distance between the game, its players, its spectators, and its creators. In conventional systems, a studio generally controls the game account and its internal records; streaming, community, and commerce may sit on separate platforms. Bettner’s theory is that blockchain-linked identity and assets could give participants a more persistent connection to the game and one another—including fans who watch without playing. It is a theory about how value and participation might be organized, not an established benefit for players.

Why reject the NFT-first playbook?

The NFT-first pattern Bettner criticized announces a game before it exists, sells digital assets or tokens to finance development, and then has to deliver a game to a community that may already have financial expectations. That can put pressure on design: scarcity, resale demand, and asset appreciation may begin competing with balance and fun.

Playful instead raised venture capital and kept developing the game. GamesBeat reported a $46 million financing round led by Paradigm in March 2023, after years of development. Bettner also framed retaining the studio’s intellectual property as a way to preserve control over the game’s design and future. The figure is a reported financing round, not a current valuation, a verified lifetime budget, or evidence of commercial success. Venture funding changes who bears risk and when; it does not remove the pressure to make the project succeed.

What does the Web3 layer actually offer?

The project’s digital-asset and identity features should be distinguished from the combat game. Official materials describe several ecosystem components, but they do not establish that blockchain is needed to play a match or that every item can be traded.

Wildpass

The Wildpass is a Genesis digital collectible. The official Wildpass FAQ says 4,444 were minted on Polygon through Magic Eden’s launch platform. It says migration from Polygon to Ethereum began on February 25, 2025; that date does not establish that every holder completed migration. The page lists playtests, exclusive events, future Wildlist access, and early access to future ownership opportunities among its privileges. The FAQ explicitly says a Wildpass is not required to play Wildcard.

Wildfile and Flair

Wildfile is described by the project as a soulbound NFT identity layer intended to connect a user’s Discord, wallet, social profiles, and participation in the ecosystem. Soulbound here means the identity asset is designed not to be transferred like a tradable collectible. Flair refers to collectible digital items associated with Wildfile and community participation. These are project-described functions; they do not guarantee that an identity or item will retain utility if the game or its services change.

Rewards, tests, and organized play

The official site has promoted pre-launch community rewards such as cosmetics, cards, and other in-game content, alongside Alpha updates, organized play, creator activity, and event participation. These are signs of development and community activity, not proof of retention, broad demand, or a completed launch. Nor do they establish that players can reliably earn money from the game.

Does blockchain add something a conventional game cannot?

Some proposed benefits—persistent identity, collectibles, participation records, rewards, creator programs, and spectator engagement—already exist in conventional games and platforms. A developer can run accounts, loyalty programs, creator codes, tournaments, and cosmetic stores using databases and standard payment systems. Public blockchains may make selected records or assets independently verifiable and potentially portable, but that advantage matters only if other services actually recognize them and users can use them safely.

Token ownership is not the same as ownership of the game, control over its rules, or a guarantee of access. A token may show that a wallet controls a particular asset; the studio can still control servers, game balance, and whether that asset has in-game utility. Interoperability is also not automatic: another game must choose to support the asset, and its format and rights must permit that use.

Blockchain does not make intermediaries disappear. Wallet providers, marketplaces, smart-contract systems, custodians, and platform operators can still shape the experience and charge fees. The practical test is whether Wildcard gives ordinary players a meaningful degree of portability or control that justifies wallet setup, transaction complexity, scams, and support burdens. The available official descriptions do not show that its core combat requires these systems.

Why spectatorability matters—and what remains unproven

Bettner’s broader ambition is to make competitive games compelling entertainment for people who do not play them. He has compared the opportunity to the emotional investment audiences bring to major sporting events. For Wildcard, that means pursuing more than a playable match: the studio wants an esport, a creator and streamer platform, a social arena, and a community that persists around the game.

That is a product goal, not evidence of a sustainable audience. Conference appearances, NFT sales, social followers, and Discord membership are not substitutes for repeat play, tournament activity, creator adoption, retention, or enough players to support reliable matchmaking. A game can be designed to watch well and still fail to attract regular viewers.

The main risks in the model

  • Speculation can distort design. If scarce assets become the focus, players may be treated as buyers or holders rather than competitors. If assets affect match power, fairness can suffer; if they are cosmetic, their practical value may be limited.
  • Wallets and markets add risk. Phishing, stolen keys, mistaken transfers, confusing networks, and marketplace dependence are extra problems for players who only want to play.
  • Migration and utility are not guaranteed. A chain migration can create confusion about contracts and transfers. On-chain control of a token does not guarantee that the studio’s servers will continue to recognize it.
  • Communities can pull in different directions. Collectors may value scarcity and resale prospects; competitive players may prioritize balance; casual players may want a low-friction game. Their interests can conflict.
  • The product can miss its window. Long development can leave a game with a community but no established release, while a spectator-first ambition can prove expensive if it does not produce an audience.

These risks do not prove that the experiment cannot work. They define what would have to be demonstrated: enjoyable matches without asset ownership, accessible onboarding, competitive integrity, and durable player activity independent of speculation.

Wildcard’s status as of August 18, 2026

Playful’s corporate site still labels Wildcard “Coming soon.” The game’s official site shows Alpha activity, including Alpha 5 references, organized play, community rewards, Steam Next Fest participation, and a planned path toward Early Access. Its latest prominently indexed newsletter is dated October 2025 and announces Steam Next Fest participation. Together, those pages establish ongoing development and public testing; they do not establish a completed full commercial launch by August 18, 2026. The project’s own status can change, so readers should treat that as a dated snapshot, not a permanent release forecast.

How to judge the experiment

Wildcard is best understood as a conventional game with a proposed Web3 layer, not as proof that blockchain has solved game ownership or community economics. The decisive questions are practical:

  • Can a newcomer enjoy and compete without buying a collectible or managing a wallet?
  • Are matches balanced independently of asset rarity and resale value?
  • Are blockchain transactions optional, clearly explained, and safe to avoid?
  • What do token holders actually control, and what depends on the studio’s servers or future decisions?
  • Does the game earn repeat players and viewers, rather than merely attention around digital assets?

Bettner’s distinction between building a game first and selling assets first is meaningful, but it is only a starting point. The project still has to show that its game works for ordinary players and that any blockchain feature adds enough value to justify its added complexity.
