Is Ubuntu Good for Gaming in 2026?

Ubuntu is a capable gaming OS for many Steam players, but compatibility depends on your games—especially multiplayer titles with anti-cheat. Here’s how to decide and set it up.

Yes—Ubuntu is good for gaming if the games you care about work on Linux. Steam and Proton make a large range of Windows games playable, and native Linux games are straightforward. But Ubuntu is not a guaranteed Windows replacement: multiplayer anti-cheat, some launchers, VR, and Windows-only peripheral tools can be deal-breakers. Check your essential games before switching; if only a few are uncertain, dual-booting is a practical compromise.

What gaming on Ubuntu means in 2026

As of October 2026, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, released on April 23, 2026, is the current long-term-support release. It receives five years of standard support through April 2031. Its newer Linux kernel, graphics improvements, and NTSYNC driver are useful foundations, but none guarantees that a particular game will run or perform better. Ubuntu 26.04 release notes and the 26.04 LTS summary describe the release changes.

There are several ways to play on Ubuntu, with different levels of compatibility work:

  • Native Linux games are built for Linux and are generally the simplest case.
  • Windows games on Steam can run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer integrated with Steam Play. Proton enables many games, not every game. Ubuntu’s Proton guide explains the setup.
  • Non-Steam Windows games may work through tools such as Lutris or Heroic, but launcher, DRM, and anti-cheat compatibility varies.
  • Cloud gaming runs remotely, so local Linux game compatibility matters less; availability depends on the service and its browser or app support.
  • Emulation is a separate setup with emulator- and controller-specific requirements.
  • VR is more limited and sensitive to drivers and packaging than ordinary desktop gaming.

Ubuntu’s appeal is that it combines gaming with a general-purpose desktop. It is especially plausible for a Steam-focused library, single-player games, indies, older titles, and players willing to check compatibility or adjust settings.

Will your games work?

Compatibility is a property of an individual game and its current updates, not a promise made by Steam or Ubuntu. A title may launch and work well, need a specific Proton version, have graphical or controller issues, fail at its launcher, or work in single-player but not multiplayer. A game update, graphics-driver change, Proton update, or anti-cheat policy change can alter the result.

Before changing operating systems, list the five to ten games you play most and check their current status in ProtonDB, alongside the publisher’s support information for multiplayer titles. ProtonDB is crowdsourced: reports are useful clues, not a guarantee for your hardware or configuration. Steam’s Linux game compatibility information is another reference.

Lower-risk and higher-risk libraries

  • Often a good fit: native Linux games, many single-player Steam games, indies, older titles, and games that use common DirectX 9, 10, or 11 technologies.
  • Check carefully: new releases, games with separate launchers or unusual DRM, games with complex mod managers, and titles that depend on proprietary codecs or middleware.
  • Highest risk: competitive multiplayer games whose publishers do not enable Proton-compatible anti-cheat, games requiring Windows-only services or utilities, and some VR titles and accessories.

Steam Deck compatibility can be a useful clue, but it is not a permanent guarantee: the title, update, hardware, and configuration may differ.

Anti-cheat is the biggest reason to keep Windows available

Valve says Proton supports some anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, when the game developer enables and configures Linux/Proton support. The mere presence of one of those products does not mean a game works on Ubuntu. Valve says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported and are not recommended for Proton. See Valve’s Proton and anti-cheat documentation.

For an anti-cheat failure, changing graphics settings is unlikely to help: the game may be rejecting the compatibility environment rather than having a rendering problem. Verify the publisher’s current support status and recent player reports for the exact game. If an essential title depends on unsupported kernel-level anti-cheat, Ubuntu is not a dependable sole operating system for that library.

Steam installation and Proton setup

Ubuntu officially documents a Steam Snap package, while Valve also distributes an official Steam package for Ubuntu. Neither is the universal best choice. The Snap is a convenient, sandboxed, automatically updated starting point for ordinary Steam gaming. Valve specifically says SteamVR should use the native distribution package rather than Snap or Flatpak because those packaging formats interfere with DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection. The native package may also be more convenient for complex external libraries, launchers, and modding workflows.

Start with Ubuntu’s Steam documentation for the supported Snap route, or Valve’s Steam for Linux project for its package and guidance.

Enable Proton and choose it for a game

  1. Open Steam and select Settings > Steam Play.
  2. Enable Enable Steam Play for supported titles.
  3. To try games Steam does not list as supported, also enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
  4. For a specific game, right-click it in your library and select Properties > Compatibility.
  5. Check Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select a Proton version to test.

Begin with the default choice unless a recent game-specific report points to another version. A custom Proton build such as Proton-GE can be a troubleshooting option, not a requirement. For Steam Snap, Ubuntu documents this directory for custom compatibility tools:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

mkdir -p ~/snap/steam/common/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d

Extract the custom build into that directory, restart Steam, and select it in the compatibility-tool menu. Custom builds are community-maintained, so use them when they address a specific issue rather than assuming they are always better. See Ubuntu’s Proton configuration guide.

Graphics drivers and performance

Ubuntu does not automatically run games slower or faster than Windows. Results depend on the title, whether it is native or using Proton, the graphics driver and translation layer, kernel and Mesa versions, shader-cache state, display session, CPU or GPU limits, and game updates. Ubuntu 26.04’s NTSYNC driver is intended to improve performance potential for Windows games under Wine and Proton; that is an infrastructure change, not a promise of higher frame rates in every game. Ubuntu’s 26.04 summary covers the release improvements.

NVIDIA

For modern NVIDIA gaming, Ubuntu’s recommended proprietary driver is generally a better starting point than Nouveau. Install the recommended driver through Ubuntu’s driver tools and include the 32-bit graphics libraries Steam games may need. Valve’s general Ubuntu driver guidance includes sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall; Ubuntu explains dedicated-GPU setup in its dedicated GPU guide. Exact driver availability depends on the GPU generation, Ubuntu release, kernel, and enabled repositories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD and Intel

AMD and Intel graphics depend heavily on the open-source Mesa graphics stack. Ubuntu 26.04 has a newer kernel and graphics base than older LTS releases, which can help with newer hardware, but owners of very recent GPUs should confirm support for their specific model. There is no universal rule that one GPU vendor is faster or better on Ubuntu.

To compare operating systems meaningfully, use the same game version, settings, resolution, driver where comparable, and frame-rate cap; allow shader caches to settle. A result from one game or machine should not be generalized to all Ubuntu gaming.

Playing games outside Steam

Non-Steam libraries are possible, but usually require more setup than Steam Play. These tools do not remove per-game compatibility limits.

  • Lutris manages games from multiple sources, Wine versions, and separate Wine prefixes. It can help with standalone installers, GOG titles, older games, and launchers such as Battle.net. Community installation scripts may become outdated when a launcher changes.
  • Heroic Games Launcher supports GOG, Epic Games, and Amazon Games libraries and can manage Wine/Proton versions outside Steam. Owning a game through one of those stores does not guarantee its launcher, DRM, multiplayer, or anti-cheat works on Ubuntu.

Use these tools when you need them rather than installing every launcher up front. A game’s storefront and its compatibility are separate questions.

Controllers, mods, peripherals, and VR

Standard USB and Bluetooth controllers commonly work as input devices, and Steam Input can handle mapping for many Xbox-style and PlayStation controllers. A supported gamepad does not guarantee that every wireless receiver or advanced feature works.

Gaming mice, keyboards, racing wheels, HOTAS devices, and fight sticks deserve a separate check. A device may function as a basic human-interface device while losing Windows-only software features such as macro configuration, per-game profiles, RGB controls, firmware updates, or display integration. Mod managers and third-party tools can likewise be more involved than on Windows.

For SteamVR, use Valve’s native distribution package, not Steam Snap or Flatpak. Valve’s SteamVR Linux support guidance also says NVIDIA users need the proprietary driver and AMD or Intel users need supported Mesa drivers. Check the exact headset, runtime, tracking, controllers, and games before making VR the reason to switch; Linux VR is more setup-sensitive than ordinary gaming.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, older LTS releases, or dual boot?

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is the sensible default for most new installations: it is current and has a five-year standard-support window. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS remains an option if a particular device or software setup is known to work better on its older base. Interim releases have newer packages at times but receive nine months of support, making them less attractive if the priority is a longer, stable support window. Ubuntu’s release information lists support periods. Desktop flavors such as Kubuntu and Xubuntu change the desktop environment and resource profile; the desktop alone does not determine game compatibility or performance.

  • Internal Specifications: 32GB DDR5 5600MHz Memory (2 DDR5 Slots Total, Maximum 32GB); 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD (2 x PCIe M.2 Slots | 1 Slot Available)

Choose based on your essential use:

  • Switch to Ubuntu: your key games have favorable current compatibility reports, your hardware has supported drivers, and occasional per-game adjustments are acceptable.
  • Dual-boot: most of your library works, but one or two important games, a peripheral suite, or a VR setup still needs Windows. Keep Windows available as a fallback while testing Ubuntu.
  • Keep Windows as your main gaming system: your regular play depends on unsupported anti-cheat, Windows-only software, or broad plug-and-play compatibility, and you do not want to troubleshoot.

A practical first setup

  1. Install the 64-bit Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS release unless a known hardware or software requirement points to another supported release.
  2. Update the system with sudo apt update followed by sudo apt full-upgrade, then reboot if updates require it.
  3. Install Ubuntu’s recommended graphics driver. For NVIDIA or mixed hardware, Valve’s general guidance is sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall; confirm the recommended driver for your GPU.
  4. Install Steam from Ubuntu’s official Snap route for ordinary gaming, or choose Valve’s native package if SteamVR or a complex library setup is essential.
  5. Enable Steam Play in Settings > Steam Play, then check current reports for your most important games.
  6. Test one representative game, including multiplayer if you rely on it, before moving your entire library or removing Windows.
  7. Add Lutris or Heroic only for the non-Steam libraries you actually use.

Common problems and what to check

A game opens and immediately closes

Check the game’s current compatibility reports, try Proton Experimental or another reported version, and use Steam’s option to verify game files. Confirm that the GPU driver and required 32-bit components are installed. If the failure occurs at anti-cheat or a launcher, changing Proton versions may not overcome a publisher-side block.

Black screen or graphical corruption

Try a different Proton version and temporarily remove unusual launch options. Check current reports for the game and, where available, compare Wayland and X11 sessions. Driver regressions, Vulkan behavior, video codecs, HDR, or upscaling can all be involved; do not assume the game itself is at fault.

The game runs but multiplayer fails

Check the publisher’s anti-cheat configuration and recent reports for that exact title. A rendering workaround will not solve a multiplayer service that rejects Proton.

Steam cannot see an external library

Check the drive’s mount location and permissions, including how an NTFS partition is mounted, and whether the Steam package can access the library path. Snap sandbox permissions can matter here; the native Valve package may be more convenient for complex storage, although the Snap remains Ubuntu’s documented option for ordinary use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update breaks a game that used to work

A game patch, Proton release, driver update, or anti-cheat change can alter compatibility. Keep a known-good Proton version available when one is working, and avoid changing several parts of the system at once when diagnosing a failure.

Ubuntu versus Windows for gaming

Area Ubuntu Windows
Steam gaming Strong for native titles and many Windows games through Proton; compatibility is game-specific. Broadest native support for the Windows game library.
Anti-cheat multiplayer Depends on the title and publisher’s Proton configuration; kernel-level anti-cheat is a major barrier. Usually the wider-supported choice for games built around Windows anti-cheat.
Graphics drivers Good support, but driver freshness and setup vary by GPU and release. Broad vendor support and the default target for many PC releases.
Peripheral software Basic input may work even when vendor-specific configuration tools do not. More likely to support manufacturer configuration utilities.
VR Possible for some setups, but limited and sensitive to packaging and drivers. Generally the safer choice for broad PC VR support.
Cost and control Ubuntu is available without an operating-system purchase price and offers more control over the desktop environment. A Windows license may have a cost depending on the device and license already available; it is a proprietary platform.

Neither operating system has a universal frame-rate advantage. The practical difference is breadth of compatibility versus the Linux desktop’s flexibility and the games and tools that currently support it.
