Yes, the original JSAUX PC0106 transparent backplate produced modest cooling and fan-speed improvements in reported tests—but it is not all you need to fix an overheating Steam Deck. It replaces the rear cover with a transparent shell and an aluminum heat-spreading plate; the plate can get hot, installation carries some risk, and the original model is not a universal fit for the OLED Deck.
What the JSAUX PC0106 backplate actually is
The original PC0106 is a replacement rear cover for the Steam Deck LCD, not a new APU heatsink, fan, or active cooling system. Its transparent shell incorporates an aluminum plate that spreads heat from the area over the internal heat source toward the back of the device. Packages and later variants may differ in included screws, tools, button parts, vents, or lighting.
Keep the product generations distinct. The original PC0106 has a solid aluminum cooling plate; later vented or RGB versions use related names, while JSAUX also lists PC0108 shell products. Similar appearance and overlapping model labels do not establish that two parts share the same fit or features.
What the reported cooling results show
In a test reported by Tech Times, citing Sean Hollister’s coverage, the modified Deck ran about 4°C cooler in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The cited testing also reported fan-speed reductions of roughly 500–900 RPM in particular scenarios. These are observations from specific tests, not a guaranteed result across games, Deck units, room temperatures, power settings, or charging conditions.

A separate example, summarized by MobileSyrup, recorded 5,674 RPM with the aluminum plate versus 6,475 RPM without it while downloading a 35GB game—a difference of 801 RPM. RPM is not a decibel measurement, so it does not establish a specific reduction in perceived loudness.
Temperature readings are not interchangeable
- CPU and GPU sensors: These describe temperatures at the reported components, not the whole device.
- SSD and other motherboard components: JSAUX argues that these temperatures matter too; an APU reading alone does not show every thermal effect.
- Exterior shell: A hotter plate can mean heat is moving into the shell. A cooler-feeling exterior does not, by itself, prove the APU is cooler.
- Fan speed and noise: Fan demand depends on workload, fan model and curve, power limit, ambient temperature, and whether the Deck is charging.
JSAUX’s own comparison of its later vented design says CPU/GPU temperatures and fan speeds were close to those of the earlier PC0106, while the newer design reduced shell temperature and fan noise relative to the stock backplate in the company’s testing. That is manufacturer testing, not an independent result. Its explanation of the design and heat trade-offs is at JSAUX’s thermal overview.
The trade-off: the aluminum can become hot
Moving heat into an aluminum plate can help dissipate it, but it also puts more heat at the rear surface. JSAUX later acknowledged that prolonged contact with the exposed aluminum in the original design could cause discomfort or a low-temperature burn. Do not treat the plate as safe to hold against skin during sustained play; avoid prolonged contact when it is hot.

A protective case may reduce direct contact, but it can also obstruct airflow or trap heat. JSAUX warns that cases can cause heat accumulation and affect the plate’s heat-dissipation function in its FAQ. Case shape and vent placement matter, and a case may also hide the transparent-shell look.

A replacement backplate may improve thermal headroom in some workloads, but it cannot repair a hardware fault or compensate reliably for poor airflow. Check the underlying cause if the Deck is abnormally hot, loud, or shutting down.
- Make sure intake and exhaust vents are not blocked, and clear dust buildup carefully.
- Consider room temperature and airflow around the device; high ambient heat leaves less room for cooling.
- Undo aggressive overclocking or power-limit changes and check whether software or firmware behavior is driving unusually high power use.
- A noisy or failing fan, deteriorated thermal material, or damaged or poorly seated heatsink calls for diagnosis or repair, not a cosmetic backplate swap.
If the Deck has a suspected fan, heatsink, or board problem, use an appropriate repair route rather than treating the backplate as the cure.

Check the exact model before buying: LCD and OLED differ
The original LCD and OLED Steam Decks have different internal layouts, so their rear covers should not be assumed interchangeable. JSAUX’s FAQ identifies the PC0106-era backplate as incompatible with OLED. Its later announcement says the PC0106C RGB and PC0106D cooling-edition backplates support both LCD and OLED, while current product listings show overlapping labels and variant-specific compatibility information.
Do not buy by appearance alone. Confirm the exact model number and the listing’s LCD/OLED statement before ordering. Check the JSAUX announcement alongside the current product listing; if the variant’s compatibility is unclear, do not assume it fits your Deck.

Installation is a hardware modification, not a snap-on accessory
A rear-cover replacement is less invasive than a full front-shell or screen replacement, but opening the Deck still creates a risk of damaging the device. JSAUX warns that extensive shell work is best left to experienced users or a professional, and that excessive screw force can deform or damage parts. Follow the instructions for the exact product revision; JSAUX’s current listing directs users to its installation tutorial.

- Shut the Deck down completely and remove the microSD card. A card left in place can be damaged when the case is separated.
- Use the correct driver to remove and keep track of the rear-shell screws.
- Separate the rear cover carefully with a plastic pry tool. Avoid levering against buttons, cables, the fan, battery, or other internal components.
- Transfer or fit any included button parts as directed for that specific model. Apply thermal grease or other thermal material only where its instructions specify.
- Seat the new backplate without pinching cables or covering vents, then tighten screws evenly and gently; do not overtighten.
- Reassemble and test the Deck before fitting a protective case. Check that the buttons work, the cover sits flush, vents remain clear, and the fan does not rattle or sound newly obstructed.
Common problems include lost or stripped screws, cracked shell tabs, a damaged microSD card, pinched cables, incorrectly installed buttons, misplaced thermal material, a loose or uneven fit, and new fan noise caused by contact or obstruction. If the cover will not sit flush or temperatures rise, stop and inspect the fit, cable clearance, thermal-material placement, and vents; reinstall the stock cover if needed. Do not keep gaming to see whether an unusual problem settles. Stop using the Deck if it becomes abnormally hot, smells unusual, shuts down, or has a swollen battery. Battery, board, or connector damage warrants professional repair rather than repeated disassembly.

The solid original plate prioritizes heat spreading, but its hot exterior is a meaningful comfort trade-off. JSAUX’s later vented design adds airflow paths and embedded aluminum fins; the company says it balances cooling against dust accumulation rather than leaving the vents completely open. More airflow can also mean more dust exposure, and a case can undermine the intended airflow.
JSAUX’s product announcement listed the RGB backplate at $39.99 and the cooling-edition vented backplate at $26.99; those are prices shown in that announcement, not a promise of current price or availability. Its current store listing has shown different sale prices and “COMING SOON” signals for some variants. Check the live listing and exact SKU before treating a product as available.

For a less invasive first step, keep the vents clear, improve airflow around the Deck, and try a conservative frame-rate or TDP limit. A failing fan or other hardware fault needs repair. An external airflow accessory may change surface airflow or perceived noise, but the evidence here does not establish that one will lower internal APU temperatures.
The transparent PC0106 is best understood as a cosmetic rear-cover mod with plausible, test-specific cooling benefits—not a one-part overheating solution. Its appeal is strongest for an LCD owner who values the look, understands the hot-surface and installation trade-offs, and verifies the exact model before buying.
