Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to any available HDMI IN port on your Roku TV, turn on both devices, then select that HDMI input on the TV. You do not need a Roku app, Roku account, internet connection, or special Roku channel just to play through HDMI.

What you need

  • A PS4, PS4 Slim, or PS4 Pro and its power cable.
  • A working HDMI cable.
  • An available HDMI input on the Roku TV.
  • The Roku TV remote or access to the TV’s input controls.

The HDMI cable carries picture and sound together, so a separate audio cable is not normally needed. Internet access is optional for the connection itself; you may need it for PS4 updates, online play, streaming apps, or account sign-in.

Before you connect: Roku TV or Roku streaming device?

A Roku TV has Roku software built into the television. Connect the PS4 directly to one of the TV’s HDMI inputs. A Roku streaming stick or box is a separate device and is not needed for PS4 gameplay; it can stay connected to a different HDMI input. Roku lists PlayStation 4 among the consoles supported through a Roku TV’s HDMI inputs (Roku’s console compatibility guidance).

Find the port labeled HDMI OUT on the PS4 and an available port labeled HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or similar on the TV. You can use any suitable HDMI input; the one marked ARC is not required. ARC is primarily used to send TV audio to an external audio system, not to make a console connection work (Roku HDMI settings guidance).

How to connect a PS4 to a Roku TV

  1. Turn off the PS4 and Roku TV.
  2. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the PS4’s HDMI OUT port and the other into an available HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Connect the PS4 power cable.
  4. Turn on the TV, then the PS4.
  5. On the Roku TV, select the numbered HDMI input you used. Depending on the TV model and software, open Home screen → Inputs, choose Home → Settings → TV inputs, or select the HDMI tile on the Home screen. Labels and menus vary by manufacturer, model, region, and software version.
  6. Wait for the PS4 startup screen or home screen to appear. Confirm that sound plays through the TV speakers or your connected audio system.

The console may be detected and the input may be named “PlayStation 4” automatically, but neither detection nor renaming is necessary. If there is no picture, confirm the selected input matches the port you used before troubleshooting further.

Organize the input and optional automatic switching

If your TV offers input naming, you can label the HDMI input “PS4” or “Game Console.” The exact renaming path depends on the Roku TV brand and software version; it is a convenience, not a requirement.

HDMI-CEC is an optional control feature that may let the TV switch inputs or respond to device power behavior. It is separate from the HDMI connection that carries the PS4’s picture and sound. On PS4, the setting is Settings → System → Enable HDMI Device Link (the exact menu may vary with system software). Roku TV’s CEC controls are generally under Home → Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC); options can include System audio control and 1-touch play. Enable the relevant options on both devices and restart them if you want to try automatic switching. CEC behavior varies, and manual input selection remains reliable when automatic switching does not work (PS4 user guide; Roku HDMI settings guidance).

Picture settings: standard PS4, PS4 Pro, and HDR

The original PS4 and PS4 Slim are not 4K-game consoles; their gameplay output is generally up to 1080p, depending on the game and display settings. PS4 Pro can output 4K in compatible games and applications when the TV, cable, content, and settings support it. A higher-rated cable will not make an original PS4 render games in 4K or improve game performance.

PS4 systems can output HDR when the console, TV, cable, content, and signal path meet the requirements. Sony’s HDR guidance specifies an HDR10-capable 2K or 4K display, HDR-capable content, a Premium HDMI cable, and PS4 system software 7.0 or later. For video settings, use Settings → Sound and Screen → Video Output Settings; Video Output Information on that screen shows the detected display capabilities. Sony recommends connecting the PS4 directly to the TV while configuring HDR (Sony’s PS4 HDR instructions).

If the Roku TV exposes an HDMI mode setting, a typical route is Home → Settings → Inputs → select the HDMI input → HDMI mode. Roku recommends starting with Auto; on some newer 4K HDR gaming setups, Standard may be suitable. Compatibility is intended for older devices and can reduce picture quality. Exact names and availability vary by model; consult the TV’s instructions if the labels differ (Roku 4K, 8K, and HDR device guidance).

For HDR, verify that the TV supports HDR10, the game or video supports HDR, the correct HDMI input has its enhanced or HDR mode enabled, and the PS4’s HDR and Deep Color Output settings are set to Automatic. TV manufacturers use different names for enhanced HDMI settings, including “HDR mode,” “HDMI Enhanced Mode,” and “UHD Color,” so check the manual for your specific TV.

Fix “No signal,” a black screen, or a flickering picture

  1. Check the input and ports. Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input used by the cable and that the cable is plugged into the PS4’s HDMI OUT port.
  2. Reseat and test the cable. Turn off both devices, disconnect and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable, then try another TV HDMI input and a known-good cable. A shorter cable can help diagnose intermittent flicker.
  3. Remove intermediary equipment. Connect the PS4 directly to the TV, bypassing a receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, or capture device. Such equipment can interfere with HDCP, HDR, or signal negotiation. Sony notes that a PS4 Pro routed through an AV receiver or home theater system that does not support HDCP 2.2 may produce a black screen; direct connection is its recommended workaround (Sony’s HDCP troubleshooting guidance).
  4. Check HDMI mode on compatible 4K Roku TVs. If the image has static or flashes, inspect the input’s HDMI mode and try an appropriate alternate setting. TCL identifies HDMI mode as a possible factor for static or flashing with PS4 on compatible 4K Roku TV models (TCL troubleshooting guidance).
  5. Recover from a video setting that the TV cannot display. If the problem began after changing PS4 resolution or HDR settings, start the console in Safe Mode and use its video resolution reset/change option. Follow the official PS4 user guide for entering Safe Mode; connect the controller with a USB cable when prompted. Once the picture returns, set output from Settings → Sound and Screen → Video Output Settings. Let the console detect the display or choose a supported standard resolution rather than assuming one resolution works on every TV (PS4 user guide).
  6. Isolate a possible hardware fault. If possible, test the PS4 on another TV or monitor. If it still has no picture with a known-good cable, the console or its HDMI port may need service; if another display works, focus on the Roku TV input or its settings.

Black screens do not have one universal cause: input selection, a damaged port or cable, unsupported output settings, HDCP negotiation, or intermediary equipment can all be involved.

  • BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices

Fix picture without sound

  • Check the TV volume and mute status.
  • Check whether audio is being sent to a soundbar, Bluetooth device, or ARC/eARC system instead of the TV speakers.
  • On the PS4, review Settings → Devices → Audio Devices.
  • Make sure the HDMI cable is fully seated. Try the TV’s internal speakers first, then add external audio equipment once the direct PS4-to-TV connection works.

If the PS4 is connected directly to the TV, configure the TV’s audio output for the soundbar or receiver afterward. ARC/eARC can carry TV audio to an external audio system, but it is not a special input required by the PS4 (Roku HDMI settings guidance).

When to use an HDMI switch or receiver

Use a direct PS4-to-TV connection if the TV has a free input. An HDMI switch is an option when all TV inputs are occupied, but it adds another device that must support the needed resolution, HDR format, HDCP version, and audio path. A receiver or switch that does not pass the required signal can cause black screens or prevent HDR. For a PS4 Pro HDR setup, direct connection is the safer baseline; route audio separately only if needed.

A switch is not a fix for a wrong input selection or faulty cable. Test the PS4 directly with a known-good cable before adding one. A Roku streaming stick can remain on another HDMI input, and no Roku streaming device needs to sit between the PS4 and TV.

Wireless casting is not the normal PS4-to-Roku connection

For ordinary gameplay on the television, HDMI is the direct, low-latency connection and does not rely on Wi-Fi. The Roku mobile app and Roku Channel Store are not part of this setup; searching for a PS4 channel or casting the console through Roku is not required. Remote Play through a compatible device is a separate use case, not a replacement for connecting the PS4’s HDMI output to the TV.
