There is no single game directory on a Mac. The location depends on whether you need the visible app, the installed game files, or separate data such as saves and settings. For a game installed through Steam or another launcher, use its option to browse or show local files first; it accounts for custom libraries and external drives. To find a Mac app, check /Applications or ~/Applications.
Find the installed game files through its launcher
A launcher is usually the most reliable way to locate the game’s installation folder because it can show a custom or external-drive location instead of assuming a default path. Look for a command such as Browse local files, Show in Finder, or Open install location.
In Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Control-click or right-click the game.
- Choose Manage, then select Browse local files or the equivalent option shown by your Steam client.
The folder Steam opens is the installed location. If the game is listed but the folder cannot be opened, its files may be missing or the drive containing them may not be mounted.
Other launchers have similar file-browsing commands, though labels vary. Use the launcher’s library or install settings if you cannot find the command in the game’s context menu. This is particularly important for games installed in a custom library or on an external drive.

Find the game app in Finder
Open Finder and choose Go > Applications. Look for the game’s .app. Apps installed for all users are commonly in /Applications; an app installed just for your account may be in ~/Applications. Apple describes Applications as the normal place to find installed apps (Apple Support).
Select the app and press Command-I to open Get Info and check its location. If there are multiple copies, compare their full paths and modification dates before opening, moving, or deleting one. A mounted disk image (.dmg) or an old backup can also look like another copy.
Inspect a game’s app bundle
Many Mac apps are bundles: Finder presents them as a single app, but internally they are package directories. Control-click or right-click a game app and choose Show Package Contents, then open Contents. Apple’s documentation describes the application bundle as the app’s installation directory (The Mac Application Environment).
Contents/MacOS/commonly contains executable files.Contents/Resources/commonly contains bundled resources.Contents/Frameworks/may contain supporting frameworks.Contents/SharedSupport/may contain additional app data.
Contents differ by game. The bundle may contain only a launcher or part of the game; saves and downloadable content may be elsewhere. Avoid changing bundle contents unless the game’s developer instructs you to: edits can interfere with updates or app integrity checks.
Open the hidden user Library folder
The user Library is hidden by default in Finder. To open it without changing Finder settings:

- Bring Finder to the front and choose Go > Go to Folder….
- Enter a path, such as
~/Library/Application Support. - Press Return.
Apple documents Go to Folder as a way to open a known pathname directly (Apple Support). You can also open Finder’s Go menu, hold Option, and choose Library. In macOS versions that offer it, another option is to open your home folder, choose View > Show View Options, and enable Show Library Folder.
These paths are different: ~/Library is the current user’s Library, while /Library is system-wide. The tilde (~) means your home folder, so ~/Library is equivalent to /Users/your-username/Library for your account. Apple describes separate user, local, and system file domains (File System Basics).
Find saves, settings, mods, and other game data
These files are not necessarily in the installation folder. Check the locations below, replacing the example folder name with the game, developer, or bundle identifier where appropriate:

~/Library/Application Support/— a common location for user-level app data in non-sandboxed apps. Apple identifies this as the normal user Application Support directory (Apple Developer).~/Library/Containers/<bundle identifier>/Data/— sandboxed apps may keep support files inside their container rather than the usual Application Support folder (Apple Developer).~/Documents/or~/Documents/My Games/— some games put saves or settings here.~/Library/Preferences/— some app preferences are stored here.
A folder might use the publisher or developer’s name instead of the game title, and a game may not create its data folder until you launch it. For a sandboxed Mac App Store game, the visible app may be in /Applications while its user data is in a container. Check the game’s support documentation or settings for its specific save and mod paths. Back up a suspected folder before modifying it; Application Support can contain saves, settings, launcher data, or other important files, not just disposable cache.

~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/
A game may be inside a folder under common, with an app bundle nested within it. This is a default to check, not a guarantee: Steam libraries can be customized or stored on another volume. Steamworks documents the Mac Application Support root (Steamworks); the more specific steamapps/common layout is also commonly reported by Steam users (Steam Community). Prefer Steam’s local-files command when available.

Use Finder
- Open Finder and search for the game title.
- Choose This Mac rather than limiting the search to the current folder.
- If the title does not find a result, try the developer name or executable filename.
- Select a result and use File > Get Info to check its location.
Finder search may not reveal every hidden folder or file inside a package. You can also enable the path bar with View > Show Path Bar. To copy a full path, Control-click an item while holding Option and look for Copy “item” as Pathname, where available. Dragging a file or folder into Terminal inserts its path.
Search with Terminal
To search your home folder for a game title, open Terminal and run:
find ~ -iname "*game-name*" 2>/dev/null
Replace game-name with a distinctive part of the title. To search likely user folders only:

Recommended Free Tools
To search for app bundles in the usual Applications locations:
find /Applications ~/Applications -iname "*.app" 2>/dev/null
If the game may be on an external drive, make sure the drive is mounted, then search:
find /Volumes -iname "*game-name*" 2>/dev/null
2>/dev/null hides permission-denied messages. A whole-disk search can be slow and may require privacy permissions. Do not run destructive commands from an unfamiliar guide.
If the usual locations do not show the game
- Check that it is installed. A launcher listing does not prove its files are present; try its local-files command or install-location settings.
- Check external volumes. Look in Finder’s sidebar and under
/Volumes/. A game on a disconnected drive will not appear at its normal location. - Look under another name. Search for the developer, publisher, bundle identifier, or executable, not just the game title.
- Check the container and Documents folders. A sandboxed game or a game that stores user data separately may not create a named folder in the usual Application Support location.
- Check search permissions. If Finder or Terminal cannot inspect a location, review its access under System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Account for wrappers. Compatibility layers and launchers can put the playable files in a nested directory or virtual environment, while the visible Mac app is only an entry point. GOG’s developer documentation, for example, recommends Mac games as
.appbundles by default, but installation layouts vary (GOG Developer Docs). - Check the game’s official support instructions. They are the best guide to game-specific save, mod, or log locations.
Before moving or deleting game files
Use the launcher to uninstall or move a game when possible. Do not delete folders from Application Support or Containers just because they are large: they may contain saves, settings, mods, license data, cloud-sync information, or files needed for troubleshooting. Application Support is intended for app-support files rather than ordinary documents (Apple Developer). If you are unsure what a folder contains, back it up and identify it through the game’s documentation before removing anything.
