Restart Windows, update the relevant apps and services, then repair or verify the game before trying disruptive steps. Avoid deleting save data unless you have confirmed that your progress is synchronized.
Start with the symptom

These symptoms are clues, not diagnoses. Forza’s PC launch and crash guidance recommends a layered approach that includes Windows, drivers, Gaming Services, software conflicts, and system requirements.
Identify where you installed Forza
Steam
Use Steam’s file verification before reinstalling: open Library, right-click Forza, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Update Steam and temporarily disable the Steam overlay for a test. Steam does not rule out Xbox-side causes: account, cloud-save, or Gaming Services errors may still involve Microsoft components.
Xbox app or PC Game Pass
Update the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, then repair Gaming Services and Forza using the steps below. Menu labels can vary with app versions. If the Xbox app offers a game-management option such as Verify and Repair, use it before reinstalling.

Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and install available updates for the Store, Xbox app, Gaming Services, and related components. Use the Store cache reset and Windows app repair steps below if updating does not help.
Try the low-risk fixes first
1. Restart and check for a wider service or update problem
- Close Forza, Steam, the Xbox app, and Microsoft Store.
- Restart Windows 11, then launch the game from its usual launcher.
- If it still fails, check Forza Support announcements, Xbox service status, and the game’s official release notes or known issues. A service outage or broken game update may not be fixable from your PC.
2. Confirm the PC meets the game’s requirements
Compare your PC with the current official specifications for the specific game and edition you own. Requirements can differ by game, platform, resolution, and graphics preset, so avoid relying on an old minimum-spec list. Check available storage, drive health, RAM, CPU, GPU and DirectX feature support, and whether a laptop is using its discrete GPU. Forza’s PC troubleshooting guidance also advises confirming that the PC meets the applicable minimum requirements.
3. Update Windows and Store components
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install pending updates and restart.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. Update Microsoft Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, and any related Xbox components shown.
- Retry Forza before making further changes.
Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting guidance puts Windows and Store updates before app repair, reset, or reinstallation.
4. Repair Gaming Services
For an Xbox app or Microsoft Store installation, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Gaming Services > Advanced options. Select Terminate, then Repair; restart Windows and test the game. Use Reset only if repair did not work. Forza lists Gaming Services repair or reinstallation among its remedies for Windows launch failures. On Steam, investigate this component when the error points to Xbox identity, account sign-in, cloud saves, or online services rather than assuming it explains every crash.

5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen, then restart Windows and check for Store updates.
This clears the Store cache; it is not an uninstall of Forza. Forza’s installation and Microsoft Store troubleshooting recommends WSRESET. Its save-recovery guidance says the cache reset does not change account settings or delete installed apps.
Repair or verify the game
Xbox app or Microsoft Store: repair, then consider reset
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Forza Horizon 4 or Forza Horizon 5 > Advanced options. Select Terminate, then Repair. Restart and test. If repair fails, Reset is a more disruptive option and may remove local app state. Confirm that cloud synchronization has completed and protect any important local data first.
Steam: verify the installation
In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let verification finish, then launch the game. File verification can replace missing or damaged installation files; it will not resolve a bad driver, overheating, account trouble, or a conflicting program.
Fix driver and background-software conflicts
Update or roll back the graphics driver
If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver. Otherwise, get the current driver from the GPU maker and restart after installation. Choose a clean-install option if the installer provides one, then test with default game graphics settings. A newer driver is not automatically better when a regression is suspected.

Test without overlays and nonessential utilities
Close or disable one group of software at a time, then test Forza. Candidates include Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, recording and streaming tools, RGB or motherboard utilities, VPNs, traffic filters, virtual-display tools, and mod loaders or injectors such as ReShade. Third-party antivirus or ransomware protection may also block a game component; do not leave protection disabled. If testing a security block, make it brief and restore protection afterward.
A clean boot or selective startup test is more informative than uninstalling several programs at once: re-enable items in batches to identify a conflict. Forza has documented software conflicts and PC crashing reports. The official Forza Forums were retired in July 2026, so use Forza Support for current FAQs and support tickets rather than treating old forum discussions as an active support channel.
Check Windows security and required components
Look for a security block
If Forza closes without an error, open Windows Security > Protection history and look for a block involving Forza, Xbox, Gaming Services, or the launcher. Allow or restore a file only when its origin is trusted and the block clearly relates to the failure. Do not download replacement game files or DLLs from unofficial sites.
Install Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft
Forza’s PC crash guidance recommends installing the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable when launch problems persist. Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. The x64 package is appropriate for a typical modern 64-bit Windows installation; this is a component check, not a guaranteed Forza-specific cure.

Repair Windows system files if corruption is suspected
Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
sfc /scannowIf SFC says it could not repair some files, follow Microsoft’s documented System File Checker repair procedure for the next steps rather than downloading DLLs or running registry cleaners.

Return overclocked components to stock settings
Temporarily remove GPU or CPU overclocks and undervolts, custom power limits, and RAM XMP/EXPO profiles. Check CPU and GPU temperatures, free storage, and SSD health. Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer can show when a crash occurred and which module was involved, but a module name alone does not prove the root cause. Repeatable crashes in several demanding games increase suspicion of broader system instability; a Forza crash by itself does not prove defective hardware.
Make sure a laptop uses the right GPU and power mode
- Connect the laptop to AC power and turn off battery-saving modes for the test.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select Forza, and choose the high-performance GPU option if available.
- Use a performance-oriented Windows power mode and install chipset or graphics drivers recommended by the laptop manufacturer where required.

Protect progress when saves or synchronization are involved
Do not delete a WGS folder or local save files as a routine crash fix. Repairing installation files is generally different from resetting an app; resetting may remove local app state, while deleting save data can destroy progress that has not reached the cloud. Confirm that the correct Microsoft/Xbox account is signed in and let synchronization complete. Do not repeatedly cancel a sync prompt or assume offline play means progress is safely backed up.
Forza’s lost-progress and save-recovery article describes local save locations for Store versions of Horizon 4 and Horizon 5. Treat manual save recovery as a last resort and follow Forza’s current support instructions; a local copy cannot restore progress that was never synchronized.
Choose the next step based on what still fails
- Only Horizon 4 fails: Compare its installation source, game files, add-ons, save state, and per-game graphics settings with Horizon 5. A failure in one title does not by itself establish a Windows-wide fault.
- Both Horizon games fail: Focus on shared components such as Windows, graphics drivers, Gaming Services, Store cache, overlays, security software, and system stability.
- The crash happens at the same loading point: Check game files, save synchronization, the installation drive, and whether a particular event or add-on asset is involved before considering save recovery.
- It works offline but not online: Check account sign-in, Xbox services, firewall or VPN filtering, and service status. Offline play can delay cloud synchronization, so do not treat it as a permanent save workaround.
- Windows was debloated or modified: Restore required Store, Xbox, identity, or Gaming Services components through supported Windows methods. Debloat scripts can remove dependencies; do not replace missing components with unofficial downloads.
Reinstall only after the less disruptive fixes
Before uninstalling, verify the correct account, cloud-save status, target installation drive, and available space. Remove the game itself rather than unrelated Xbox or Gaming Services components unless Forza Support directs otherwise. Forza’s installation troubleshooting says Horizon 5 requires more than 100 GB of available installation space; check the current listing for your game and edition because requirements can change. Reinstalling is unlikely to fix a driver, account, service, security, or hardware problem, and moving the game to another drive is not a universal remedy.
If Forza still will not launch
Contact current Forza Support for a support ticket or FAQ, rather than posting to the retired forums. Include the game and edition, installation source, Windows version/build, GPU and driver version, exact point of failure, error code, recent updates or hardware changes, and the steps already tried. Attach relevant Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer details if available. For bug reports or suggestions, Forza directs players to its Feedback Portal.
