Assassin’s Creed Unity’s poor PC performance came from more than one bottleneck. Ubisoft said the game’s crowds and parallel simulation systems put heavy work on the CPU, while launch-era benchmarks also found its demanding graphics settings could overwhelm GPUs. Results ranged from a GTX 970 averaging 50–55 FPS at Ultra to a GTX 770 suffering drops into the low teens and, at times, single digits at 1080p High.
What did the launch-era PC benchmarks show?
The first reviews painted a picture of uneven performance: a strong card could deliver a playable average in one test, yet other hardware could experience severe dips that made the game feel much less smooth. These are results from 2014 hardware and drivers, not predictions for a modern PC.

The GTX 970 result and GTX 770 minimums are not contradictory: they come from different cards and test conditions, and an average FPS figure can conceal much lower moments. In Unity, those dips mattered because busy scenes added simulation work at the same time that high image-quality settings demanded more from the graphics card.
Why could Unity run poorly even on a powerful GPU?
Ubisoft senior producer Vincent Pontbriand described Unity as CPU-bound, explaining that the processor had to handle AI, the number of visible non-player characters and multiple systems running in parallel. That helps explain why crowded Paris scenes could produce sharp slowdowns even when the graphics card was capable of rendering the scene quickly.

“Technically we’re CPU-bound. The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it’s the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel.”
That explanation is only part of the answer. At high settings, Unity also used expensive shadows, TXAA, HBAO+, PCSS, tessellation support and other GameWorks features. Those effects raised GPU workload. The practical picture is a mixed bottleneck: CPU limits could dominate in simulation-heavy scenes, while the GPU could be the limiting component at demanding visual settings. Which one mattered more depended on the hardware, settings and scene.

What hardware did the game ask for?
A 2014 report by TIME listed the published minimum GPU class as a GeForce GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970. That was a demanding baseline for its launch period, but a minimum specification is not a promise of stable frame rates at high settings. AnandTech’s GTX 770 result illustrates why the GPU model alone does not tell the whole story: its 1080p High test still showed very poor minimums.
There is no useful single GPU answer for every PC. A graphics card may handle visual effects well while the CPU struggles with a dense crowd, or the reverse may be true. The launch benchmarks also cannot establish an exact frame rate on a current processor, graphics card, driver or patched game build.

Did AMD systems or launch bugs make performance worse?
Yes, AMD configurations were a specific concern at release. Ubisoft acknowledged that graphics performance could be adversely affected by certain AMD CPU and GPU combinations. Contemporary reports also described low frame rates, stuttering, freezes, crashes and audio problems. Those reports document launch-period issues; they do not show that every AMD PC had the same fault or that every listed problem had one cause.

The statement is evidence of a compatibility problem Ubisoft recognized, not a benchmark quantifying how much performance any particular AMD setup lost.

PC Gamer’s 2014 practical advice included disabling VSync and anti-aliasing, or forcing settings through the graphics-card driver. Treat that as launch-era troubleshooting advice rather than a guaranteed fix for a current installation: the source’s recommendation does not establish how those changes behave on every present-day GPU, driver or game version.

For a meaningful performance comparison, record more than the average FPS. A useful test should include:
- Average FPS and 1% lows or minimums, especially in dense crowds.
- CPU frame time compared with GPU frame time, to identify which component is limiting performance.
- VRAM consumption and the image-quality cost of anti-aliasing and shadow settings.
- Whether results differ between AMD and NVIDIA hardware and drivers.
- The game build, driver version, resolution, preset and test scene, so launch-era and modern results are not conflated.
Did later patches fix Unity’s stuttering?
The available launch-era evidence establishes that Ubisoft acknowledged AMD performance problems and that players and reviewers reported stuttering and other stability faults. It does not quantify the full effect of every subsequent patch or establish a reproducible 2026 PC baseline. It would therefore be misleading to claim either that every stutter was fixed or that a particular modern frame rate is typical without a test on the stated hardware and game build.
