The Xbox app’s “We can’t sign you in right now. Try again later” message is a generic authentication failure, not proof that Xbox is down or that your password is wrong. First check Xbox status, then test the same account at Microsoft account and Xbox.com. If browser sign-in works but the Windows app does not, work through the Store and Xbox app fixes below. If browser sign-in fails too, address the account, network, or service issue before resetting apps.
If this started after repeated failed attempts, stop retrying, close Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Game Bar, and wait about 30 minutes before one new attempt. Microsoft recommends that wait as a troubleshooting measure; it is not a guaranteed lockout timer. Its general sign-in guidance also recommends trying a private browser session and temporarily disabling a VPN or proxy: Microsoft account-access troubleshooting.
Start by separating an account problem from a Windows app problem
Check the Xbox status page before changing settings. A local error does not establish that there is a service outage; only treat it as one if Microsoft’s status page or announcement confirms it. Microsoft’s sign-in guidance for a separate Office error also notes that service interruptions can prevent sign-in, so retry after a confirmed incident is resolved: Microsoft Support.
Next, sign in to the same account in a browser at Microsoft account and Xbox.com. The result determines which steps are most relevant:

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Browser sign-in fails too: Check the account, security verification, service status, and network. Avoid repeated attempts; try a private browser window, another network if available, and account recovery or Microsoft support if the account remains inaccessible.
- Browser sign-in works, but Xbox does not: Focus on Windows app state, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, identity components, and cached account associations.
- A different Microsoft account works on this PC: The original account’s cached token or Windows account association may be involved. That test does not by itself prove the account is defective.
Temporarily disconnect a VPN, manual proxy, or filtering service for a single test, then restore it. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. Microsoft specifically lists VPN or proxy use among possible sign-in obstacles in its account-access guidance.
Update Windows, Microsoft Store, and Xbox components
- Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted.
- Open Microsoft Store → Library, then select Get updates or Check for updates (the label can vary). Update Xbox, Gaming Services, Xbox Game Bar, Microsoft Store, and Xbox Identity Provider if they appear.
- Restart Windows, open Xbox, and make one sign-in attempt.
Updating Windows, the Store, and Xbox is recommended in a Microsoft Q&A response concerning this message, but it is community troubleshooting guidance rather than a guaranteed fix: Microsoft Q&A.
Check date, time, and region
Incorrect system time can interfere with certificate and token validation, so confirm it as a basic diagnostic rather than assuming it is the cause.

- Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region and verify the country or region is correct.
Clear the Store cache, then repair Xbox
Run the Microsoft Store cache reset
- Press Windows + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. - Wait for the blank command window to close; Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Restart Windows and try Xbox sign-in again.
A community troubleshooting thread recommends wsreset.exe and Store updates in the context of Xbox identity-component update problems: Windows Phone Info discussion. This clears the Store cache; it is not a reason to delete unrelated folders or edit the registry.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repair the Xbox app
- On Windows 11, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. On Windows 10, use Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu or app entry, and select Advanced options.
- Select Terminate, then Repair. Reopen Xbox and test sign-in.
Repair attempts to fix the app without clearing its local app data. The Windows 10 and Windows 11 labels differ slightly.
Reset Xbox only if Repair does not help
- Return to the Xbox app’s Advanced options.
- Select Terminate, then Reset, and confirm.
- Restart Windows, reopen Xbox, and sign in.
Reset clears local app settings and cached data. It does not normally remove installed games, but check where your games are installed and do not reset individual game apps unless needed. Microsoft Q&A responses describe Repair/Reset for this error, but neither is a universal remedy: Microsoft Q&A.

Repair Microsoft Store if it also has trouble
If Store updates fail or Store itself cannot sign in, repair it before reinstalling Xbox. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10), find Microsoft Store, open Advanced options, then select Terminate and Repair. If that does not help, select Reset, restart Windows, and reopen Store. Reset can clear Store app data and settings; it is separate from deleting games.
Check Xbox services and identity components
Review service status
- Press Windows + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Look for Gaming Services, Gaming Services net, Xbox Accessory Management Service, Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Networking Service, and Xbox Live Game Save.
- If a relevant service exists but is stopped, try Start. If it is set to Disabled, change it to Manual or the default startup type shown on that PC, then restart Windows.
Names and startup behavior vary with Windows version and installed components. Do not change every service to Automatic or download replacement service files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck Xbox Identity Provider in Microsoft Store
Some Xbox installations use Xbox identity components provided through Microsoft Store, but availability and app architecture can differ. Open Microsoft Store → Library and install pending updates. If Xbox Identity Provider is listed in Store, install or update it, then restart. Community reports connect a missing or stuck component with this message, but they are anecdotal: component-update discussion and Store installation discussion. Do not use unofficial package downloads; if Store does not offer it, use Microsoft support channels.

Resolve conflicting personal and work accounts carefully
On a PC with multiple Microsoft accounts, Xbox or Store may be using a different or stale account association from the one intended. Open Settings → Accounts → Email & accounts to review accounts used by apps, and Settings → Accounts → Access work or school to review managed connections. Disconnect only an obsolete or unauthorized connection. Do not remove an employer- or school-managed account without permission; organizational policy may block personal Xbox sign-in.
After restarting, sign in to Microsoft Store with the account that owns the game or subscription, then use the intended Xbox/Microsoft account in Xbox. Case reports describe failures across Microsoft apps caused by account associations, but do not establish a single cause for every PC: Microsoft Q&A discussion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reinstall Xbox only after the app and Store fixes
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Uninstall Xbox and restart Windows.
- Reinstall Xbox from Microsoft Store, install its available updates, and try signing in.
Reinstalling the Xbox front end may not repair Gaming Services or Store authentication. Avoid uninstalling several dependencies at once; changing one component at a time makes it easier to identify the fault and avoids creating new installation problems.

Use the error code to guide the next step
Record the complete code shown with the message, including all digits and letters. Reports have paired this generic message with codes such as 0x409, 0x80070002, 0x80070424, and 0x80080300, but those codes do not share one established cause. For example, a Microsoft Q&A report includes 0x409 and 0x80070002, while a community post reports 0x80070424: Microsoft Q&A and Reddit report. Search or contact support with the exact code instead of applying a fix based only on the generic sentence.
When the error persists
- If browser sign-in fails on multiple networks, use Microsoft account recovery or support and include any verification or security message.
- If browser sign-in works but Xbox, Store, Game Bar, and Microsoft games all fail, the shared Windows authentication or Store components are more relevant than an Xbox-only reinstall. A Microsoft Q&A case reports a similar multi-app pattern: Microsoft Q&A discussion.
- If only one game fails, check which launcher installed it, which account is signed in, whether that account has the entitlement, and whether the game’s own service is available. A new Game Pass purchase, privacy-setting change, or Windows reset is not a first-line sign-in fix.
- For support, provide the exact error and code, Windows version, Xbox app version, whether browser sign-in works, and which Microsoft apps are affected.
Do not use registry deletion or broad PowerShell package-removal commands as routine troubleshooting. One Microsoft Q&A user reported a registry change for a particular multi-app sign-in case, but that is not an official general procedure and can affect stored identity data: case discussion. If the standard steps fail across Microsoft apps, contact Microsoft or Xbox Support rather than deleting identity records.
