Steam Deck Desktop Mode is a KDE Plasma Linux desktop built into SteamOS. It lets you browse the web, manage files, install compatible desktop apps, configure non-Steam software, and use the Deck with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It is not Windows or a separate operating system: it complements Gaming Mode, which remains the simpler interface for launching Steam games.

Desktop Mode vs. Gaming Mode

Gaming Mode is the controller-first Steam interface for browsing, installing, updating, and playing games. Desktop Mode opens a KDE Plasma workspace with windows, a taskbar, an application launcher, file manager, software center, browser, and terminal. KDE describes the Deck as a Plasma-based portable PC that can connect to a display and peripherals (KDE’s Steam Deck overview); Valve likewise describes the Deck as a PC that can access a desktop and install software outside Steam (Valve’s Desktop Mode FAQ).

Area Gaming Mode Desktop Mode
Best for Pick-up-and-play Steam gaming Setup, file management, browsers, utilities, and general desktop tasks
Interface Console-like Steam interface KDE Plasma desktop
Input priority Controller Mouse and keyboard; Deck controls also work for many tasks
Software Steam games and library shortcuts Linux desktop applications, Flatpaks, and compatible third-party programs

They are two ways to use the same SteamOS installation, not separate systems. Desktop Mode does not erase games or reinstall the operating system when you switch to it.

How to switch to Desktop Mode and back

Enter Desktop Mode

  1. Press the Steam button.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Switch to Desktop.
  4. Wait for SteamOS to transition to the desktop. The display may pause briefly; avoid repeatedly pressing the power button while it switches.

That is Valve’s documented route (Steam Deck basic-use guide). You should see the desktop, taskbar, application launcher, system tray, and shortcuts including Discover and Return to Gaming Mode.

Return to Gaming Mode

  1. On the desktop, open Return to Gaming Mode.
  2. Confirm if prompted and wait for the Steam interface to load.

If the shortcut is missing or unresponsive, close open applications, then try logging out from Plasma’s system menu or restarting from the desktop. Force a restart by holding the power button only if the Deck is unresponsive. Valve identifies the desktop shortcut as the normal return route (Valve’s Desktop Mode FAQ).

Use the desktop with the Deck’s built-in controls

You can do basic desktop tasks without extra accessories. Valve documents these controls:

  • Right trackpad: move the pointer; click it for a primary click.
  • Left trackpad click: secondary click.
  • R2: left click; L2: right click.
  • Steam + X: open the on-screen keyboard while Steam is running.

These controls are adequate for opening menus, launching an app, browsing casually, or typing a short command. A physical keyboard and mouse are much more comfortable for passwords, long typing, file renaming, drag-and-drop, mod installation, and terminal work. The on-screen keyboard is not a universal substitute, and some tasks require physical input (Valve’s Desktop Mode FAQ).

Install desktop applications with Discover

Discover is the graphical software center on the desktop. On Steam Deck, its applications are generally installed as Flatpaks in the writable portion of storage rather than by replacing SteamOS’s protected base system. Valve says this separation is intended to help keep installed applications from being broken by future system updates; it is not a guarantee that every app or its settings will always behave identically after an update (Valve’s Desktop Mode FAQ).

  1. Open Discover from the taskbar or application launcher.
  2. Search for the app you want.
  3. Check the publisher and app details, then select Install.
  4. Launch it from Discover or the application launcher.

Discover can provide browsers, media players, messaging tools, creative and productivity apps, emulators, and utilities. Availability does not guarantee ideal Deck controls, display scaling, performance, file access, or integration with Gaming Mode.

Flatpak, Discover, and SteamOS are different things

  • Discover is the graphical interface for finding and installing software.
  • Flatpak is an application packaging and distribution format used for many desktop apps.
  • Flathub is one possible source, or remote, for Flatpak apps; availability depends on the configured sources.
  • SteamOS is the underlying operating system. Its protected, read-only design means system-level changes are different from installing an ordinary desktop app.

Flatpak apps use sandbox permissions, which can limit access to folders, removable drives, devices, or services unless access is granted. They also use storage for runtimes, app data, and caches. If an app cannot see a file, consider its permissions and the file’s location before changing system settings. Third-party tools such as Flatseal can help inspect Flatpak permissions, but they are not Valve components.

Optional Flatpak commands

Most users can install ordinary applications through Discover. If you choose to use the terminal, these generic commands require the relevant remote to be configured and the correct application ID:

  • flatpak search <app-name> searches for an application.
  • flatpak install flathub <application-id> installs an app from Flathub.
  • flatpak update updates installed Flatpaks and runtimes.
  • flatpak list lists installed Flatpaks.
  • flatpak uninstall <application-id> removes an app.
  • flatpak repair attempts to repair local Flatpak installation data; it is not a fix for every Discover problem.

Prefer Discover and official app instructions over commands copied from an unknown source. Valve cautions that random scripts and commands can damage the device or compromise data (Valve’s Desktop Mode FAQ). Avoid piping an unfamiliar script straight into a shell, and back up important files before changing permissions or configuration. Disabling SteamOS protections is an advanced system change, not a routine app-installation step.

Add non-Steam software to your Steam library

Valve supports installing software outside Steam and adding it to the Steam library. A typical workflow is:

  1. Install the program through Discover, its official installer, or another legitimate method.
  2. Open Steam in Desktop Mode and select Games.
  3. Choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  4. Select the program or browse to its executable, then add it.
  5. Open its library properties to adjust artwork, launch options, controller layout, or compatibility settings where needed.
  6. Test it in Gaming Mode if you want to launch it from there.

Valve documents this capability in its Steam Deck developer FAQ and Steam Deck FAQ. Adding a shortcut does not make the program compatible: it only gives Steam a way to launch it, with features such as Steam Input available in some cases. A shortcut may still fail because of dependencies, DRM, launcher behavior, sandbox permissions, or missing controller support. Some desktop apps are awkward to use from Gaming Mode even if they launch.

What Proton does—and does not do

Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games through SteamOS. Steam can select a Proton version for a game, and a user can sometimes change the compatibility tool in that game’s properties. Non-Steam programs may need manual setup. Proton is not a universal Windows emulator: a Windows desktop application that launches can still have broken audio, video, input, networking, or updates. Compatibility varies by program and version. Valve explains Proton and SteamOS’s Linux foundation on its SteamOS page; its Deck Verified information applies as a compatibility signal for Steam games, not a promise for arbitrary desktop apps.

Use the Deck as a docked desktop

Desktop Mode works on the built-in screen; a dock is optional. For a more comfortable desk or living-room setup, connect a USB-C dock or hub, external display, keyboard, mouse, and power. Ethernet can also be useful. KDE describes a Plasma desktop experience with a screen and peripherals, and Valve maintains a docking support guide.

Display behavior depends on the Deck, SteamOS version, dock or hub, cable, power supply, and monitor. A dock adds connectivity rather than performance, and not every combination supports every resolution or refresh rate. If you already have a reliable compatible hub, the official dock is not a requirement. For basic app installation, no accessory is needed; a keyboard and mouse matter most for substantial typing, while a dock is worthwhile mainly for a persistent monitor setup.

Storage and microSD cards

Desktop apps, Flatpak runtimes, browser caches, downloads, emulator files, shader caches, and compatibility data all use storage. Check free space if an installation fails or the Deck feels crowded; a microSD card does not necessarily move every app’s data, cache, or compatibility files off internal storage.

Valve recommends UHS-I microSD cards rated Class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but the Deck does not support their higher interface speeds. To format a card, use Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card. Formatting erases the card, so copy off anything you need first (Valve’s basic-use guide).

What Desktop Mode cannot promise

  • It is not Windows: SteamOS is Linux-based, so a Windows .exe does not ordinarily run by double-clicking, and Windows drivers are not installed like Linux packages. Valve identifies SteamOS as Arch Linux-based (SteamOS overview).
  • Not every program has a Linux version, and not every Windows game works through Proton. Anti-cheat, DRM, launchers, codecs, and dependencies can prevent a title from working.
  • A Flatpak sandbox can restrict file or device access. Sandboxing improves separation but is not absolute isolation; granted permissions matter.
  • System-level tweaks and third-party scripts can be affected by SteamOS’s protected design or updates, and third-party software may not have official Valve support.
  • The Deck can handle light desktop tasks, but a laptop generally has more comfortable typing, a larger display, broader native Windows compatibility, and better multitasking ergonomics. The Deck is a useful compact PC for some jobs, not an automatic laptop replacement.

Troubleshoot common Desktop Mode problems

Desktop Mode will not open

  1. Install available SteamOS updates and restart; Valve recommends updates and a restart as initial troubleshooting steps.
  2. Try Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop again.
  3. Disconnect unusual USB devices or hubs, then test using the Deck screen.
  4. If the problem persists, consult Valve’s recovery options rather than trying unverified system commands.

Basic troubleshooting guidance is in Valve’s Steam Deck guide.

Discover is stuck or an app will not install

Check the network and available storage first, then restart and install pending SteamOS updates. If possible, try a different app; a repository, metadata, runtime, or individual app issue may be the cause. Use terminal repair commands only if you understand what they do, and do not delete system directories or disable protections as a first response.

An app cannot access a file

The app may be sandboxed away from that folder, the file may be on a removable drive the app cannot see, or the mount path may have changed. Check the app’s permissions and the file’s actual location. Avoid granting broad file access unless it is necessary.

The controller does not work in a desktop app

Check that Steam is running and, if the app needs Steam Input, launch it through Steam. Confirm that the selected layout suits the app and that the app supports gamepad input. Some desktop interfaces are designed for pointer and keyboard use instead.

An external display is blank or unstable

Reconnect the USB-C connection, connect power to the dock or hub, test another cable or port, and try the Deck screen by itself. Restarting with the display connected may help; if the manufacturer provides an official firmware updater, check for dock updates. Valve’s docking guide covers support, but exact results depend on the equipment and SteamOS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A system tweak breaks the Deck

First undo the change if you can. Depending on the problem, Valve’s recovery choices include rollback, factory reset, or re-imaging SteamOS. Some recovery options erase games and user data, so read the option carefully and back up what matters when possible (Valve’s recovery instructions).

Who should use Desktop Mode?

Desktop Mode is useful if you want to browse, manage files, install Linux desktop apps, configure mods or emulators, add non-Steam software, or connect the Deck to a monitor. Discover makes ordinary application installs accessible without requiring Linux expertise, though permissions and compatibility can require troubleshooting.

If you only want to play Steam games, Gaming Mode is usually the more convenient choice. If you need Windows-only professional software, specialized drivers, or a workflow that depends on Windows compatibility, Desktop Mode may not meet that need. The Deck is best understood as a handheld PC with a capable Linux desktop, not as a replacement for every laptop or Windows PC.
