ShadowPlay Not Recording Sound? 2026 Causes and Fixes

Diagnose silent ShadowPlay clips by separating game and microphone problems, checking Windows routing and privacy settings, and testing audio tracks before reinstalling drivers.

If your game sounds normal but a ShadowPlay clip is silent, first check NVIDIA’s audio settings and Windows’ per-app output routing. If only your microphone is missing, check the selected input, mute controls, and Windows microphone permissions. “ShadowPlay” is still a common name for NVIDIA recording, though current NVIDIA documentation and capture controls are centered on the NVIDIA App.

Identify which audio is missing

What you hear or see Where to look first
The game has sound, but the recording does not NVIDIA audio capture, Windows app routing, or the file’s audio tracks
Game audio records, but your voice does not Microphone selection, mute state, privacy permissions, or a virtual microphone
Your voice records, but game audio does not Windows playback routing, Volume Mixer, or the output device selected by the game
Neither game nor microphone audio records NVIDIA audio configuration, an audio service or driver problem, or a capture setup issue
An editor shows audio, but a media player is silent Track selection or player compatibility
Sound is doubled, echoing, or intermittent Duplicate capture sources, virtual-device routing, or a device that changes when reconnected

If the game itself is silent, fix its Windows or in-game audio before troubleshooting the recording. NVIDIA says its capture supports supported games, including windowed and borderless-windowed games, as well as desktop capture; whether a particular game or capture mode works can still depend on compatibility and setup (NVIDIA’s ShadowPlay support information).

Run a controlled test before changing drivers

  1. Play the game and confirm the sound is audible through the device you intend to use.
  2. Open the existing clip in a second player, such as VLC or Windows Media Player. If you use an editor, inspect and audition each audio track; a silent playback result alone does not prove the file has no audio.
  3. Press Alt+Z, open Settings, then Audio. Menu names and locations can vary between NVIDIA App and older GeForce Experience releases.
  4. Confirm system/game audio capture is on and its level is above zero. If you want voice, enable the microphone, select the intended input, and check that it is not muted in the overlay.
  5. Turn Instant Replay or recording off, apply any changes, then turn it back on. Make a fresh 10–15-second manual recording and play it back.

Use the recording or any available meters to verify that the selected devices are actually supplying audio. NVIDIA documents the NVIDIA App’s recording and compatible GPU requirements, but settings and labels can change between releases (NVIDIA App and ShadowPlay system information).

Fix missing game or desktop audio

Check Windows per-app output routing

Windows can send one game to a different output than the system default. Changing the default device alone may not change a game’s existing per-app selection.

  1. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  2. Under Apps, find the game. Make sure it is not muted, raise its volume, and set its Output device to the headset, speakers, monitor, DAC, or virtual mixer that should produce the sound.
  3. If an NVIDIA-related process such as NVIDIA Container appears in the mixer, check that it is not routed to an unintended device.
  4. Close and reopen the game, then make a new test recording.

On Windows 10, right-click the speaker icon and open Volume mixer to check app volume; use Sounds > Playback to review the output device. Microsoft recommends checking per-app volume and output routing when an app has no sound even though system sounds work (Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting steps).

Match the game’s output to the device you hear

Open Settings > System > Sound and confirm that Output is the device actually playing the game. Common mismatches include a game routed to a monitor over HDMI or DisplayPort while you listen through a headset, or the game using a virtual mixer while the NVIDIA capture is set up around another device.

For a clean test, avoid switching among HDMI audio, USB, Bluetooth, and virtual devices. Bluetooth headsets can change audio profiles when their microphone is activated; a headset may also reconnect under a different Windows device name. NVIDIA Broadcast, SteelSeries Sonar, Voicemeeter, and Wave Link can be the active output rather than the physical headset itself. Select the device the game is actually using, then relaunch the game before recording again.

Fix missing microphone audio

Select and test the input

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the microphone you intend to record.
  2. Open its properties, choose Start test, speak normally, then choose Stop test and Play. Raise input volume if needed.
  3. Check the microphone’s physical mute button, headset switch, and any mute control in its companion software.
  4. In the NVIDIA overlay’s Settings > Audio, select the same microphone—or the intended virtual microphone if you use one—and check its mute state.
  5. Record a short clip and verify that your voice is present.

These Windows 11 input selection and test controls are also part of Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance (Microsoft microphone troubleshooting).

Allow desktop microphone access

In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop applications may not appear as individual entries, so the absence of an NVIDIA App entry does not by itself show that access is unnecessary. In Windows 10, the comparable controls are under Settings > Privacy > Microphone.

Temporarily simplify competing audio devices

If Windows can hear the mic but NVIDIA cannot, reduce the number of possible inputs for a diagnostic test:

  • Disconnect unused USB microphones and headsets.
  • In More sound settings > Recording, disable unused recording devices temporarily.
  • Exit virtual audio and voice-processing software, such as SteelSeries Sonar, Voicemeeter, Wave Link, or NVIDIA Broadcast.
  • Choose one physical microphone as the Windows input and select that same device in NVIDIA’s audio settings.
  • Test, then reopen the other tools one at a time to find which device or route changes the result.

Treat this as diagnosis, not a permanent blanket fix: disabling a device can disrupt conferencing, streaming, VR, or other software. A report on NVIDIA’s developer forum describes a multiple-device and SteelSeries Sonar setup, but it is a user report, not proof of a universal defect (NVIDIA developer forum discussion).

Check separate tracks and playback compatibility

If NVIDIA is set to save system and microphone audio on separate tracks, inspect every audio stream in a capable editor or player. Some basic players or editing setups may play only one track by default. Do not assume the file is silent until you have checked the other streams.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For diagnosis, temporarily turn off separate tracks and record a simple mixed-audio test. If that clip plays correctly, track separation or playback selection is likely involved. Keep separate tracks enabled if you need to edit voice and game audio independently; a single mixed track is simpler to play but gives you less control afterward.

Resolve echo, duplicate, or intermittent sound

  • Echo or doubled game audio: Avoid capturing the same sound through both desktop audio and another application-specific or virtual source. Disable one route for the test.
  • Virtual-device loop: Check that a mixer is not sending monitored output back into the input being recorded. Simplify to one capture route, then re-enable routing one step at a time.
  • Bluetooth changes: Recheck Windows output and input selections after the headset reconnects or its microphone is enabled. The active profile may have changed.
  • Audio stops after switching devices: Close and reopen the game after selecting the new output, then restart the capture and make another test clip.

Restart audio services, then update drivers

Try service recovery only after checking device selection, mute states, permissions, and tracks. Press Start, type services.msc, and open Services. Right-click Windows Audio and choose Restart, then do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder. Relaunch the game and NVIDIA App before testing again. Microsoft includes these services among the steps for application-audio problems (Microsoft app-audio troubleshooting).

If the problem remains, note your Windows version, NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience version, graphics-driver version, and audio-device model before changing software. Then:

  1. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers and update the relevant audio device.
  2. Restart Windows and retest the selected input and output.
  3. If Windows does not detect the device correctly, use Device Manager to uninstall that device, restart, and let Windows try to reinstall it.
  4. Install the current NVIDIA App and a compatible graphics driver from NVIDIA, restart, and confirm the in-game overlay is enabled. Test ordinary recording before relying on Instant Replay.

Updating or reinstalling is not a guaranteed audio fix; it is most useful after routing and configuration checks. If the issue began just after an update, keep the version numbers and use an official NVIDIA-supported route if you decide to roll back. NVIDIA’s current documentation describes GPU and NVENC requirements; check its live compatibility information rather than relying on an old fixed GPU list (NVIDIA compatibility information).

When to switch to OBS

NVIDIA capture is a practical fit for quick gameplay recordings and Instant Replay when you want a low-setup workflow and supported GeForce hardware. OBS is a better fit when you need visible audio meters, independently controlled game and microphone sources, application-specific audio, scenes, filters, or separate tracks.

OBS’s quick-start guide says desktop audio and microphone capture are enabled by default, with manual selection under Settings > Audio (OBS quick-start guide). Its application-audio capture guide covers Windows 10 version 2004 and later and Windows 11, along with application audio in supported Game Capture or Window Capture configurations (OBS application audio capture guide).

If an application’s sound cannot be captured through ordinary application capture, OBS documents VB-CABLE as a possible routing workaround. A virtual cable adds setup complexity and can cause echo or monitoring loops, so it is not a first-line fix for ordinary game audio. Use it only when you need that routing and can verify the signal path.

Windows 10 and capture compatibility notes

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. The menus above may still be available on an existing installation, but menu paths and software support can differ from Windows 11. For NVIDIA recording, check your GPU model, driver, NVIDIA App version, Windows version, game mode (fullscreen, borderless, or windowed), and whether you are trying to capture the desktop or a game. NVIDIA’s compatibility and game-support pages are the authoritative place to verify current requirements and supported capture behavior.
