Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe official PC tool is PlayStation Accessories. It updates the device software—often called firmware—on DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers from a Windows PC, so you do not need a PS5. Connect the controller by USB for the update; Bluetooth is not the recommended troubleshooting connection.
What PlayStation Accessories does
Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app is the official Windows utility for updating DualSense and DualSense Edge controller software. Sony may call it “device software” in its support materials; “firmware” is the common shorthand. For a standard DualSense, updating is the main relevant app function. DualSense Edge owners can also use the app to manage profiles and settings such as button assignments, stick inputs, dead zones, vibration, and trigger intensity.
This is not a Steam feature, a generic Windows driver package, or an unofficial firmware flasher. Download the app through PlayStation’s official support pages rather than a third-party mirror.
What you need
- A DualSense or DualSense Edge controller.
- A Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 PC. Sony lists these for DualSense compatibility; check the current app download page for any app-specific requirements.
- A USB-C cable that supports data, not just charging. A charging-only cable can power the controller without making it visible to the app.
- A direct USB port on the PC where possible. A working internet connection is practically needed to obtain the app and any available update; check the installer’s current requirements.
Sony documents USB and Bluetooth for connecting a DualSense to compatible devices, but use USB for this update procedure. Sony’s PC update instructions do not establish that updating over Bluetooth is supported. See Sony’s DualSense PC compatibility and connection guidance.

Download and install the official tool
- Open Sony’s PlayStation Accessories support page and follow its download link for Windows.
- Install PlayStation Accessories using the downloaded installer. Use the live download page for the current installation requirements and instructions.
- Connect the controller to the PC with a data-capable USB-C cable. If possible, connect directly rather than through a hub.
- Launch PlayStation Accessories. Close games and other controller-management tools temporarily if the controller is not detected.
Update the controller
- With the controller connected by USB, wait for PlayStation Accessories to identify it.
- Open the controller’s firmware or device-software area in the app. Screen layout and exact wording may change.
- Check the installed version. If a newer version is available, the app will offer an update; for DualSense Edge, Sony documents choosing Update when one is available.
- Choose the update option and follow the on-screen prompts. Do not turn off the PC or disconnect the controller while the update is in progress.
- Wait for the app to report completion. If needed, reconnect the controller, then test it in Windows or a game.
Sony advises updating multiple controllers one at a time. Its DualSense Edge PC setup instructions also describe checking the current version and updating from PlayStation Accessories.
Check whether the update worked
Return to the controller’s software section in PlayStation Accessories and check the displayed installed version. If there is no update option, the app may not have a newer update available for that controller. Sony’s cited support pages explain how to update but do not establish a current public firmware version number, so there is no reliable universal version number to quote here.

If the PC does not detect the controller
Try these checks in order. The cable, port, and app-conflict suggestions are practical Windows troubleshooting; Sony’s pages establish USB updating and the reset procedure.
- Connect by USB rather than Bluetooth.
- Try another USB-C cable known to transfer data. A controller that charges but is not listed in the app may be connected with a charge-only cable.
- Try another USB port directly on the PC, avoiding an unpowered hub.
- Temporarily close Steam, DS4Windows, reWASD, emulator software, or other controller tools that might be communicating with the device.
- Restart PlayStation Accessories, then restart Windows if the controller remains missing.
- Reset the controller: disconnect it, then press the small reset button in the hole on the back for at least five seconds. Reconnect by USB and try again. See Sony’s DualSense troubleshooting instructions.
- If it still is not detected, try the PS5 update route below if one is available, or contact PlayStation Support or Repairs.
If the update fails or appears stuck
If the app is still working, do not immediately unplug the controller. Wait for completion or for an error message. If the app clearly reports failure, restart the app and PC, reconnect directly by USB, and retry. If the controller becomes unresponsive, use the reset procedure above and reconnect it. Sony’s public support pages do not provide a more detailed DualSense-specific failed-update recovery sequence; contact PlayStation Support if the controller remains unusable after these steps.

PlayStation Accessories is not PlayStation Link PC Driver
The names are easy to confuse, but the tools serve different hardware. PlayStation Accessories handles DualSense-family controllers. The separate PlayStation Link PC Driver is for PlayStation Link products such as PULSE Elite, PULSE Explore, and the PlayStation Link USB adapter—not for updating DualSense firmware.
Use a PS5 instead
A PS5 is an alternative if the PC app cannot be installed, the PC does not recognize the controller, or you already have the console available. Sony’s manual update path is Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. Controller updates are also included with PS5 system software updates. Details are on Sony’s PS5 support page.

What an update can—and cannot—change on PC
A firmware update does not guarantee that every game will expose every DualSense feature. Support depends on the game and, for some features, the connection method. Sony notes that adaptive triggers depend on game support; haptic feedback on PC may require USB; the built-in microphone and speaker work on Windows when supported by the game; and the headset jack requires a wired PC connection. Consult Sony’s PC compatibility guidance and the game’s own controller documentation.
Steam Input and game-specific settings can help with mapping or compatibility, but they do not update controller firmware. Likewise, remapping utilities are not substitutes for Sony’s updater. An update should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for stick drift or mechanical wear; persistent hardware problems belong with PlayStation Repairs.
