1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesZeroTier is the best all-around Hamachi alternative for most groups playing older LAN games, especially when players use different operating systems. Choose Radmin VPN for a simpler Windows-only setup, or Tailscale when the game accepts a direct IP address and you want a modern mesh VPN. If your game is supported by GameRanger, its game rooms may be easier than setting up a virtual network. For a dedicated game server, use playit.gg instead—but it does not create a virtual LAN.
The right pick depends less on which tool claims to be fastest and more on how the game connects: LAN discovery, direct IP, a game lobby, or a dedicated server. Those methods are not interchangeable.
What kind of Hamachi alternative does your game need?
Hamachi connects computers through a private virtual network. Some alternatives create a similar network interface; others solve a narrower problem, such as finding a lobby or publishing one game server. Choose based on the connection method your game supports.
- Virtual-LAN overlay: Connects players’ machines to a private virtual network. Useful for LAN modes and games that accept a host’s overlay IP. ZeroTier and Radmin VPN fit this category; SoftEther can be configured to provide Layer-2 bridging.
- Mesh VPN: Connects approved devices over a private network, usually at the IP-routing layer. Tailscale is a good fit when players can connect to a host IP and port, but it does not automatically reproduce every LAN broadcast or discovery feature.
- Game lobby: Provides rooms or matchmaking for a supported list of games. GameRanger is not a general virtual network.
- Game-server proxy: Gives players a public endpoint for a host-run dedicated server. playit.gg fits here; it does not make every player’s computer appear on the same LAN.
- Per-port tunnel: Shares a selected service or port rather than exposing a whole virtual network. Porthole is a specialist option for compatible games, not a general LAN emulator.
A game’s LAN browser may rely on broadcast or multicast discovery. A successful VPN connection—or a successful ping—does not prove that the game browser will find another player. Direct-IP support is often the deciding factor.

Plan and product details can change. ZeroTier’s listed Personal allowance is tied to pricing effective August 4, 2026; Tailscale’s plan is described on its current pricing page. Neither those limits nor a free tier guarantees that a particular game will work.
Best Hamachi alternatives, by use case
ZeroTier: best overall for a mixed-platform virtual LAN
ZeroTier is the closest general-purpose alternative here for groups that want a managed virtual network across separate homes. Its documentation describes networks that behave like a LAN across remote locations, and its compatibility list covers Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, FreeBSD and more. Windows 10/11 and macOS have GUI clients; Linux use is primarily through the command line. See the official compatibility list and getting-started guide.
Under pricing effective August 4, 2026, the free Personal plan includes 10 devices, one network and one network administrator. That is a useful allowance for a small gaming group, but older articles may quote different limits. The official pricing page lists paid tiers as well.
- Create an account and a network in ZeroTier Central.
- Install the client on each player’s computer or supported device.
- Have each player join using the network ID, then authorize those devices in Central.
- Confirm that each device is online and has a ZeroTier address.
- Test the host’s ZeroTier address with
ping. If the game has a direct-connect option, enter that address in the game.
ZeroTier is not a guarantee of automatic LAN discovery: a game may still depend on broadcasts or choose the wrong network adapter. Device authorization also adds a step for the host.

Tailscale: best for direct-IP connections and broader private-network use
Tailscale is a modern mesh VPN built around WireGuard. It is particularly convenient when a game lets players enter a host’s IP address and port, or when the same private connection will also be used for remote administration or other services. Its free Personal plan is listed as $0, with unlimited user devices and up to six users; the official pricing page describes the current plan.
- Install Tailscale on the host and each player’s device.
- Sign in the devices to the same tailnet, or use an appropriate device-sharing workflow.
- Confirm that the devices appear as approved members.
- Give players the host’s Tailscale IP address, which commonly begins with
100., and the game port if required. - If the game depends on a LAN browser rather than direct connection, test that behavior before committing the group to Tailscale.
Tailscale is not a universal Layer-2 LAN emulator. Its guidance also notes possible interoperability issues with other VPNs, firewalls, antivirus tools, virtualization software and related networking components; see Tailscale’s interoperability documentation. The distinction between its networking model and ZeroTier’s is also covered in Tailscale’s comparison.
Choose it when: direct IP works for your game, your group spans operating systems, or you want a mesh VPN for more than gaming.

Radmin VPN is marketed for connecting remote computers into one local network and playing LAN games. The vendor says it is free, has no paid features or advertisements, and does not limit the number of gamers. Its official support lists Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11; it is not a native recommendation for macOS, Linux or SteamOS. See Radmin VPN.
- Host: install Radmin VPN, select Create network, enter a network name and password, then select Create.
- Players: install and launch Radmin VPN, select Join network, enter the network name and password, then select Join.
- Use the remote-computer context menu’s ping command to check connectivity, then launch the game.
Radmin’s help guidance calls out matching game versions, joining the same Radmin network and allowing both the game and Radmin through firewall or antivirus controls. If the client reports Relay/TCP, it means a direct connection was not established; that can point to the ISP or network environment, but changing providers or obtaining a public IP is not a guaranteed fix.

Choose it when: every player uses Windows and you want a short, Hamachi-like create-and-join workflow.
GameRanger: best when your exact game is supported
GameRanger offers rooms and matchmaking for supported games rather than a general virtual LAN. Check whether your exact title and game version are supported before installing it; mods, launchers and unusual builds may change compatibility. Its network support page says normal network configuration is generally unnecessary. For router problems, it identifies UPnP or manual forwarding of UDP port 16000 as possible remedies.
Choose it when: the game appears in its supported catalog and your group would rather join a room than manage a private network.
SoftEther VPN: best for self-hosting and advanced control
SoftEther is a free, open-source, multi-protocol VPN project. Its capabilities include client and server components, virtual hubs, Layer-2 Ethernet bridging, Layer-3 routing, NAT traversal and SSL-VPN over HTTPS. The project lists support for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD and Solaris, among other client platforms. See the project site and download and version history.
Its flexibility comes with operational work: someone must set up and maintain the server, authentication, routing and firewall rules. The project page lists version 4.44 Build 9807 RTM dated April 16, 2025; check the version history for a newer release before installing.

Choose it when: you can administer a VPN server and need self-hosting, Layer-2 bridging or unusual routing—not when you want a quick gaming app.
playit.gg: best for a dedicated server, not a shared LAN
playit.gg publishes a game server through a public endpoint. The host runs its agent; players connect to the server address, without the host configuring router port forwarding, according to the official site. It offers game-specific options and custom TCP/UDP, with a free tier and Premium advertised at $3 per month on the current site.
This is appropriate when the game supports a dedicated server and players can join by address. It will not make LAN-only peer discovery work or put every player on a shared private subnet. Confirm that the game’s server and required protocols are supported; the product’s pricing page gives current plan details.
Choose it when: one player can host a dedicated server and the group wants public server access rather than a virtual LAN.
Porthole: a narrow option for selected ports
Porthole describes a Steam-network-based approach that proxies selected ports instead of putting an entire computer on a shared virtual LAN. Its product page lists Windows and Linux/SteamOS support and positions the tool for self-hosted games over Steam. See Porthole’s product page for its current platform and plan details.

- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
It can be a better-scoped approach when a game has a known port and direct service access is sufficient. It is not a solution for arbitrary LAN browsing, and suitability depends on the game and Steam-network behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right tool
- All players on Windows, conventional LAN mode: start with Radmin VPN for the simplest setup.
- Mixed platforms or an older game expecting a virtual network: try ZeroTier; use direct IP if the game offers it.
- Game accepts a host IP and port, or you also need private remote access: try Tailscale.
- Your exact title is supported by a lobby service: check GameRanger before configuring a VPN.
- You can run a dedicated server and want friends to connect publicly: consider playit.gg.
- You can administer your own VPN server and need advanced network behavior: consider SoftEther.
- You only need to expose one compatible game service: investigate a per-port tool such as Porthole instead of sharing a whole virtual network.
Do not choose by generic speed rankings. No controlled, geographically matched comparison establishes that one of these services is always fastest. Real performance depends on player locations, ISP routing, NAT traversal, whether traffic is direct or relayed, Wi-Fi and the host’s connection.
Check these basics before troubleshooting
- Match the game version, patches, DLC, mods and launch options on every machine.
- Confirm that the host has actually started the LAN session or dedicated server.
- Allow the game executable and networking client through the operating-system firewall; set the overlay network to trusted or Private where appropriate.
- For a first test, temporarily disable unrelated VPN clients and avoid adding multiple active overlays.
- Test with one host and one player before inviting the whole group.
- Test overlay connectivity with
pingwhere the tool supports it, then test the game separately.
Only change security settings temporarily for diagnosis. A whole-machine overlay can make services beyond the game reachable to authorized network members unless firewall rules and access policies limit them. Keep accounts protected, authorize only people you trust, and restrict access to the game when possible.
Troubleshooting by symptom
You cannot join the virtual network
- Check that the device is online and, for ZeroTier, authorized in the network’s administration page.
- Confirm the virtual adapter is enabled and the client has not been blocked by firewall or antivirus software.
- Check whether another VPN, virtual-machine adapter or restrictive school, workplace or carrier network is interfering with routes or connectivity.
The overlay connects, but ping to the host fails
- Verify the address belongs to the overlay, not the host’s home-network address.
- Check firewall rules on both machines; a firewall can block ICMP ping even when the client is connected.
- Confirm both devices are members of the same network and that no route conflict is sending traffic elsewhere.
Ping works, but the game cannot find the host
This usually means the virtual connection works but the game’s discovery method does not. The game may rely on broadcast or multicast, bind to the wrong adapter, or require a manually entered host address.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Look for Direct Connect, Join by IP or a similar option and enter the host’s overlay address and required port.
- Allow the game executable—not only the VPN client—through the firewall on the overlay interface.
- Close other overlays or unused network adapters for a test, then check whether the game is using the intended interface.
- If the game has no direct-connect option, try a virtual-LAN tool with behavior better suited to that title, or use GameRanger if the game is supported.
The host appears, but joining fails
- Recheck game version, mods, DLC and launch arguments.
- Verify the host session is still running and that the game’s firewall rule permits inbound connections.
- Check the game’s required port and protocol in its own documentation; do not assume every title uses the same ports.
The connection is slow or shows Relay/TCP
A relay can be necessary when direct NAT traversal fails, but a relay is not by itself proof of a product-wide speed problem. Check connection status where available, then consider geographic distance, ISP routing, Wi-Fi congestion and the host’s upload capacity. Radmin identifies Relay/TCP as a case where a direct connection was not established; the network environment may be responsible.
Linux or Steam Deck behaves differently
Check that the chosen tool has an official client for the operating system and whether it requires command-line setup. ZeroTier documents Linux CLI support; Radmin’s listed support is Windows 7 and later. Compatibility layers and multiple adapters can also affect which interface a game uses, so test a single host and client with direct-IP connection before relying on LAN discovery.
When Hamachi is still a reasonable choice
You do not need to migrate just because alternatives exist. If everyone already has a working Hamachi setup, the game instructions specifically call for it, and the group is small, keeping the existing configuration may be simpler than changing tools. Switch when a concrete limitation—platform support, connection reliability, administration or the game’s connection model—makes another option a better fit.
Quick Recap
Alternatives that solve a different problem
- Direct port forwarding: can expose a host-run game server, but requires router configuration and careful firewall rules; it does not create a shared virtual LAN.
- Dedicated game hosting: moves the server off a player’s home connection, but is a separate hosting choice rather than a Hamachi-style network.
- Remote-play tools: can stream one player’s game to others for titles designed for local co-op, but they do not connect separate game clients as LAN peers.
