An unlocked CPU gives you room to adjust processor settings; it does not guarantee higher speed. For most gaming PCs, a locked processor is the better value if you will leave it at default settings. An unlocked model makes sense when you want to tune a CPU-limited system, experiment with power and voltage, or optimize sustained CPU-heavy work—and have the motherboard, cooling, budget, and patience to support that plan.
What does “locked” or “unlocked” mean?
A locked CPU prevents conventional multiplier-based overclocking. An unlocked CPU exposes the multiplier and typically offers broader controls for frequency, voltage, and power limits. “Unlocked” describes tuning capability, not an out-of-box overclock: the chip runs with its normal automatic boost behavior unless you change settings.
Locked processors can still raise their clocks automatically under the manufacturer’s boost rules. That is different from manually setting frequencies or limits, and it is why an unlocked label does not by itself predict everyday performance. The headroom available varies among individual chips and depends on cooling, power limits, firmware, and workload. Intel’s explanation of locked and unlocked processors describes the distinction.
Memory tuning is separate from CPU-core overclocking. Intel XMP and AMD EXPO load memory profiles that can run RAM above default JEDEC settings; enabling one does not necessarily overclock the CPU cores. They are still memory overclocking, with stability and warranty implications of their own.

How to identify an unlocked processor
Intel K, KF, X, and KS
Intel’s desktop K and KF models are unlocked, as are some products in X and KS families. Suffix meaning varies by product family and generation, so check the exact model’s specifications rather than inferring features from a letter alone. Intel lists examples including the Core i9-12900K, Core i7-11700KF, Core i5-13600K, and Core Ultra K/KF processors in its overclocking overview.
KF is not simply another spelling of K: KF models lack integrated graphics. You need a discrete graphics card to get display output, and you lose the iGPU as a troubleshooting fallback or for workflows that use processor graphics features. Intel’s comparison of the Core Ultra 5 245K and 245KF, for example, shows graphics on the 245K and none on the 245KF.
AMD Ryzen
AMD says every Ryzen processor is multiplier-unlocked from the factory. That makes the locked-versus-unlocked label less useful when comparing Ryzen desktop CPUs than when comparing Intel models. The more important questions are which tuning features the specific processor and platform support, and whether you actually need them. AMD Ryzen Master information and the Ryzen desktop product page describe the platform’s tuning options; feature availability and behavior still vary by model, board, and BIOS.
What hardware do you need to tune a CPU?
Intel desktop systems
Full CPU overclocking requires an eligible unlocked Intel processor, a board and chipset that support CPU tuning, and BIOS firmware that exposes the controls. Intel names Z-series chipsets as examples of full-overclocking platforms; B- and W-series boards may allow memory overclocking without full CPU overclocking. Intel XTU also requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, and its features depend on the processor and board. Check the board’s CPU-support notes and BIOS before buying. Intel’s XTU requirements set out these platform limits.

AMD Ryzen systems
Use a compatible motherboard and current BIOS, and confirm support for the exact features you want—such as Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), Curve Optimizer, Ryzen Master controls, or memory tuning. On AM5, memory is DDR5 and may use AMD EXPO profiles. EXPO tunes memory, not necessarily CPU cores. AMD explains EXPO and memory compatibility separately from its CPU tuning features.
Cooling, power, and airflow
Raising voltage, frequency, or power limits can increase heat and power consumption. Cooler capacity, case airflow, ambient temperature, dust, and motherboard VRM cooling all affect sustained performance and stability. A system that is already thermally limited may gain little from higher limits, and more voltage is not a free performance adjustment: it adds heat and can accelerate degradation.
Choose cooling for the exact CPU and intended settings rather than assuming every unlocked chip needs liquid cooling. As a model-specific example, AMD lists a 95°C maximum operating temperature for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance; that guidance is not a universal requirement for all Ryzen processors. AMD’s 9800X3D specifications give the model’s details.

XTU’s AI Assist is not a universal CPU feature. Intel’s guide lists support beginning with XTU version 7.13.0.x and limits it to selected 14th-generation Core i9 processors, including the 14900K, 14900KF, and 14900KS. Confirm current compatibility before relying on it.
AMD Ryzen Master and EXPO
AMD Ryzen Master offers profiles and supported tuning controls for Ryzen systems, including CPU, integrated Radeon graphics, and DDR5 memory features where available. AMD also describes one-click PBO tuning; automatic controls are convenient but do not guarantee stability or remove the need to check warranty terms.
For AM5 memory tuning, use a compatible DDR5 kit, enable its EXPO profile in BIOS, then verify stability. A kit’s advertised profile is not a guarantee that every CPU and motherboard combination will run it identically. AMD provides a processor memory compatibility list and EXPO guidance.
Will overclocking improve gaming performance?
It can help when the processor is the bottleneck, but there is no reliable universal performance percentage. The result depends on the game, resolution, graphics card, boost behavior, memory, cooling, power limits, and stability settings. An overclock cannot fix a GPU bottleneck.

- High-refresh esports: A CPU-limited game at low resolution may show measurable gains, particularly when the system is chasing very high frame rates.
- GPU-limited AAA games: At demanding settings or higher resolutions, the graphics card often sets the pace, so extra CPU frequency may make little visible difference.
- Rendering, compiling, simulation, and encoding: Sustained all-core tuning can help if the workload scales with CPU performance, but added heat and power may reduce efficiency.
- Office work and browsing: These tasks rarely justify paying specifically for overclocking capability.
Efficiency tuning can be a better goal than a headline clock speed. A carefully validated undervolt or curve adjustment may reduce heat and power or improve sustained boost, but results depend on the processor and workload. For a concrete illustration of why test conditions matter, AMD’s EXPO page describes a March 2026 system using a Ryzen 7 9700X, DDR5-6000, an X870E motherboard, Windows 11 Pro, and a GeForce RTX 5090; those results should not be treated as a prediction for a different build.
Is an unlocked CPU worth the extra cost?
Compare the whole platform rather than the processor price alone. An unlocked Intel CPU may call for a Z-series board and stronger cooling to make full use of its controls. Tuning may also increase power and noise, require more PSU headroom, and consume time in stability testing. A KF CPU additionally requires a discrete graphics card for display output. Memory-profile compatibility is another consideration if you plan to tune RAM.
If your gaming system is GPU-limited, spending the difference on a faster graphics card may do more for gaming than buying an unlocked CPU and supporting hardware. An unlocked model is more compelling if you already have a strong GPU, target very high frame rates, run sustained CPU-heavy workloads, or genuinely enjoy tuning. For Ryzen, compare the model’s actual feature support and performance rather than paying a premium just for the assumption that “unlocked” is a special upgrade.
Prices change by region, retailer, stock, and date. AMD’s U.S. store listed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at $479 including tax and out of stock when the page was crawled; that is a dated store observation, not a general current market price. Check AMD’s store listing for the page’s current status.

Warranty, stability, and other risks
Read the policy for your exact processor and tuning method. Intel warns that changing clock frequency or voltage may void product warranties and may reduce stability, security, performance, or component life. AMD says operating the processor or memory outside published specifications through overclocking or undervolting can void the applicable warranty, including when tuning is enabled through AMD hardware or software. AMD also warns of possible hardware damage, data loss or corruption, and reduced performance. See Intel’s warranty and tuning guidance, AMD’s EXPO terms, and AMD’s Ryzen Master information.
Enabling XMP or EXPO is memory overclocking when it takes memory beyond published default specifications; it is not automatically warranty-neutral. Likewise, a vendor-provided one-click profile is still a tuning choice, not a promise of stable operation or protected warranty coverage. Intel has announced a protected overclocking profile for selected Core Ultra 200-series K-SKUs under its 200S Boost program, but eligibility and current terms must be verified for the exact processor. Intel’s 200S Boost announcement describes the program.
Instability does not always appear in a short benchmark. A system can boot and then crash in a long render, fail in one game while passing another test, or produce memory errors after a profile change. Excessive voltage may cause thermal throttling and lower sustained performance; a fixed all-core frequency can also interfere with the processor’s normal light-thread boost. Keep important data backed up before experimenting.
A cautious CPU-tuning workflow
- Record a baseline. Note normal clocks, temperatures, power, fan noise, idle behavior, and results in the workloads you care about. Save the original BIOS profile if the board supports it.
- Check firmware and compatibility. Review the motherboard maker’s CPU-support notes, update BIOS as appropriate, and confirm the CPU and memory kit are supported. Know the board’s clear-CMOS or recovery procedure before changing settings.
- Check cooling first. Verify cooler mounting, thermal paste, fan direction, pump operation if applicable, and case airflow.
- Change one category at a time. Do not alter CPU ratio, voltage, memory speed, timings, and power limits all at once. Begin with conservative or automatic tuning if you choose to use it.
- Use modest changes. Make small adjustments and do not copy someone else’s voltage: two CPUs with the same model number can behave differently.
- Test each meaningful change. Start with short checks, then use longer tests that resemble your real workloads. Watch for crashes, application errors, WHEA events, thermal throttling, clock stretching, or a performance regression.
- Validate the tasks you actually run. Passing one benchmark does not prove stability in a particular game, compiler, render, or encode job.
- Revert if anything is unstable. Restore the prior profile. If the system cannot POST, follow the motherboard’s clear-CMOS, BIOS Flashback, or recovery instructions, then return to conservative defaults before trying again.
BIOS entry keys and tuning-menu labels depend on the motherboard; Delete and F2 are common startup keys, not universal instructions. Intel’s guide to overclocking explains the general process, but use the board maker’s manual for exact controls.
