microSD Express for Switch 2: What It Improves—and Where It Works

microSD Express is mandatory for Switch 2 game storage, but its speed depends on the host and workload. Here’s what it means for Switch 2, older Switch cards, and handheld PCs.

For Nintendo Switch 2, microSD Express is the required format for expandable storage of downloadable games and other supported data. Its faster interface is designed to give the console quicker access to stored data, but it does not raise frame rates or guarantee a particular loading-time improvement. In other devices, a card only delivers Express speeds if the device has an Express-capable reader.

What microSD Express is—and what the labels mean

microSD describes the card format, while labels such as microSDHC and microSDXC classify capacity ranges. UHS-I and UHS-II describe bus interfaces. microSD Express is a newer interface standard that uses PCIe-based signaling and NVMe-related technology to provide more bandwidth than conventional microSD interfaces. The SD Association describes the standard in its SD Standard Overview and SD Express white paper.

Other markings answer different questions. A1 or A2 is an Application Performance Class, while V30, V60, and V90 are Video Speed Classes primarily intended to indicate suitability for video recording. None of those labels, by itself, means a card is microSD Express. For Switch 2 game storage, the first filter is the explicit microSD Express designation.

Likewise, an advertised maximum read speed is not a promise of the speed a console will achieve. Sequential reads, random access, sustained writes, the host controller, and the workload all affect real performance.

Why Switch 2 requires microSD Express

Nintendo says the format provides faster access to data so Switch 2 games can run smoothly. The higher-bandwidth interface also gives the console more storage headroom than legacy UHS-I microSD. That is a technical inference from the interface design, not a separately published Nintendo bandwidth target.

Faster access can help when a game reads assets from the card, and may improve some loading or installation operations. It does not make every game load at the same speed as internal storage: CPU decompression, game-engine design, the console’s controller, and the type of data being read can matter as much as headline transfer rates. Nintendo has not specified a universal minimum advertised speed or a fixed loading-time improvement. See its microSD Express FAQ.

What the card can store on Switch 2

Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. Supported card storage includes downloadable software, software update data, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured gameplay videos. Game-save data is kept in system memory, not on the microSD Express card. The card therefore expands installation and media capacity; it is not a save-data backup device.

When inserted, the card becomes the default location for downloadable software. Nintendo recommends using one card. Software spread across multiple cards cannot simply be combined later by moving between them; consolidating it requires copying the complete data set onto a larger card where supported.

Device compatibility: fit is not the same as Express speed

Device Card use Express speeds? Practical guidance
Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express required for supported card storage Uses the Express interface, subject to console limits Choose a genuine Express card, up to Nintendo’s 2TB limit.
Original Nintendo Switch Accepts conventional microSD and microSD Express cards No. Nintendo says an Express card runs at ordinary microSD speeds. A regular microSD card is sufficient unless you plan to reuse an Express card in a compatible device.
ROG Xbox Ally Official specification lists a UHS-II microSD reader supporting SD, SDXC, and SDHC Express support is not identified in the cited specification Do not buy Express solely for speed; compare conventional storage options and the internal SSD.
ROG Xbox Ally X Official specification lists a UHS-II microSD reader Express support is not identified in the cited specification Use the internal M.2 NVMe SSD when the priority is high-performance game storage.
Other handhelds and consoles Depends on the individual device Not established here Check the manufacturer’s specification for an Express reader; physical fit alone proves nothing.

Nintendo’s compatibility guide covers both Switch generations. ASUS identifies the readers in its ROG Xbox Ally specifications and ROG Xbox Ally X specifications as UHS-II, not microSD Express. Its Xbox ROG Ally product page provides product information, but does not change that interface distinction.

For Steam Deck, Legion Go, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and other models, do not assume compatibility or Express performance from the card’s shape. Check the current manufacturer documentation for the exact model. If an Express reader is not specified, treat any use as dependent on the host’s supported conventional interface and storage rules.

What speed figures tell you—and what they do not

SanDisk lists up to 880MB/s read and 650MB/s write for one Switch 2-oriented microSD Express card in its product datasheet. These are manufacturer maximums, not measured Switch 2 speeds or guaranteed results in a game. A PC card-reader benchmark also cannot predict console performance automatically.

  • Sequential read: useful for large contiguous transfers, but not a complete picture of game loading.
  • Sequential write: relevant to copying and some installation tasks; sustained speed can differ from a peak figure.
  • Random reads: matter when software requests many small pieces of data.
  • Console results: depend on the console, game, firmware, card, and operation being measured.

Storage speed does not normally increase a game’s frame rate, resolution, or visual quality. Nor does a faster card fix limits imposed by the CPU, GPU, memory, or optimization. No general battery-life or heat benefit is established for Switch 2.

Choosing a capacity

Pick capacity based on how much you download and how often you want to manage installs. The following are planning heuristics, not Nintendo-mandated tiers; actual space per game varies.

  • 2TB: Nintendo’s maximum supported capacity, useful for a large library if the price per gigabyte makes sense.

One adequately sized card is usually simpler than rotating several: it avoids splitting the installed library and reduces the chance of misplacing a card. Compare price per gigabyte only after confirming the product is genuinely microSD Express. A larger card does not itself make games run faster.

Reusing an old Switch card or changing cards

An ordinary card from the original Switch cannot store or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. It is not made compatible by formatting. Nintendo says screenshots and videos on the old card can be imported to Switch 2 system memory. Conversely, a microSD Express card can be used in the original Switch, but at that console’s ordinary microSD speed.

When replacing a Switch 2 card, use the console’s storage-management tools to move compatible downloadable data, or copy the complete contents to a larger card where supported. Otherwise, redownload software. Game saves do not travel with installed game files; manage them through Nintendo’s supported save-data transfer or cloud-save options as applicable to the game and account.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Before copying or replacing a card, preserve screenshots and videos you want to keep. Installed games can generally be downloaded again, but that does not restore card-resident captures. Nintendo’s FAQ recommends one card and explains the limits of combining data from multiple cards.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the package or manufacturer listing explicitly says microSD Express; “UHS-II,” “A2,” “V30,” or “gaming” alone is not enough.
  • Choose the capacity you are likely to keep using rather than planning around multiple cards.
  • Buy from a reputable retailer, retain the receipt, and check the warranty and return terms.
  • Check that the advertised capacity and model match the manufacturer’s documentation; test the card promptly while return options remain open.
  • Consider licensing as added reassurance, not a technical requirement. Nintendo says any card that meets the microSD Express standard and its capacity limit can be used. Licensed cards are listed on Nintendo’s microSD Express cards page.

For a Switch 2 owner, Express is the required expansion format. For an original Switch owner, a conventional card is generally the sensible choice. For a handheld-PC owner, buy Express for speed only when the manufacturer explicitly documents an Express-capable reader; otherwise compare conventional cards or the device’s internal SSD.

If the card is not recognized or seems slow

  • Switch 2 rejects the card: confirm that it is microSD Express, not merely a fast UHS card. Formatting cannot add Express capability.
  • First use does not proceed: connect the console to the internet and install the system update required for first use of a microSD Express card.
  • Works on a PC but not the console: check the card model and authenticity, update the console, and follow any on-screen preparation prompt. If the problem persists, contact the retailer or manufacturer and avoid repeatedly formatting a card that contains the only copy of important files.
  • Slower than expected: confirm the host supports Express. Peak sequential figures may not reflect random access, sustained writes, or the console’s own controller limits. A nearly full, defective, or counterfeit card can also underperform.

If a card fails, digital games may need to be downloaded again, while screenshots and videos stored only on that card may be lost. Keeping a separate copy of important captures protects against that risk.
