To change the shortcut in the current Steam desktop client, open Steam → Settings → In Game → Screenshot shortcut key(s). Steam’s screenshot tool depends on the Steam Overlay being enabled and available for that game.
Updated August 18, 2026. Steam may rearrange or rename settings in later client updates.
How to take a screenshot on Steam
- Open Steam and launch the game from your Library.
- Press F12, Steam’s default screenshot shortcut.
- Look for a screenshot notification or sound, if notifications are enabled.
- In Steam, open View → Screenshots to review the capture.
F12 is a Steam shortcut, not necessarily the game’s own screenshot command. The capture works when the Steam Overlay is active and supported for the game. Valve documents the default key and the Overlay requirement in its Steam screenshot documentation.
How to change Steam’s screenshot shortcut
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam in the upper-left menu, then choose Settings.
- Open In Game.
- Find Screenshot shortcut key(s), click its shortcut field, and press the key or combination you want.
- Close Settings and test the new shortcut in a game launched through Steam.
The shortcut is a Steam setting for games played through Steam. Choose a key Steam recognizes that is not already used by the game, the Steam Overlay, a recorder, another overlay, or accessibility software. Ctrl + F12 and Alt + F12 are possible combinations, not universal recommendations; test any choice in the game you intend to use. A laptop may treat function keys as hardware or media controls, and game controls vary.

Check that the Steam Overlay is enabled
Steam’s built-in screenshot system requires the Overlay. Check both the global setting and the setting for the individual game; either can prevent screenshots from working. Steam Support describes both controls in its Overlay troubleshooting guidance.
- For the global setting, open Steam → Settings → In Game and enable Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- For one game, open your Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open General, and enable Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Launch the game and press Shift + Tab, the default Overlay shortcut. If the Overlay opens, return to the game and try the screenshot key.
If Shift + Tab does nothing, the Overlay may be disabled, unavailable for that game, or blocked by a conflict. Steam’s interface can differ in Big Picture Mode and across desktop platforms; these paths describe the desktop client.

Where Steam screenshots are saved
Start with Steam’s screenshot manager rather than guessing a folder: open View → Screenshots, select the game and image, then use the available file-location control to show or open it on disk. You can also access screenshots from the Screenshot option in the in-game Overlay. Valve documents both routes in its screenshots guide.
If you need a separate image file and the manager does not show one, check Steam’s screenshot settings for an option to save an external copy before taking future captures. The commonly encountered folder pattern is Steam/userdata/<Steam-user-ID>/760/remote/<App-ID>/screenshots, but it is a fallback pattern, not a guaranteed location. The actual location depends on the installation, account, game, operating system, and settings.

Upload or share a Steam screenshot
Upload it to Steam
Open the Screenshot Uploader after leaving the game, or open it through View → Screenshots. Select the captures you want and use the uploader to post them to your Steam Community profile or the game’s Community hub. Capturing a screenshot locally and uploading it are separate actions; a local capture is not automatically a public post. Valve explains the uploader and Community destinations in its Steamworks documentation.
Share the image file elsewhere
Use the screenshot manager’s file-location control, then attach the image to a message, forum post, email, or image-hosting service. Sharing the file directly is useful when the recipient does not use Steam or you do not want to post it publicly.

- Confirm the game is running through Steam. If you launch through another launcher or use a non-Steam game, Overlay support may be limited.
- Test the Overlay. Press Shift + Tab in the game. If it does not open, check the global and per-game Overlay settings above.
- Check the binding. Revisit Steam → Settings → In Game → Screenshot shortcut key(s) and confirm the intended key is assigned. Temporarily try F12 to distinguish a custom-binding problem from a wider Overlay issue.
- Look for a conflict. The game may use the same key, or another launcher’s Overlay, recorder, GPU utility, or other software may intercept it. Steam Support notes that external overlays and third-party software can interfere; see its Overlay conflict guidance.
- Compare another game. If screenshots work elsewhere, the problem is likely specific to that game or its launcher rather than the global shortcut.
- Restart Steam, then the computer. If the Overlay remains broken in one title, verify that game’s files through its Steam Library properties.
If F12 triggers another action
The game may already assign F12, the laptop may use it for a hardware function, or another program may capture it. Change Steam’s shortcut to a combination such as Ctrl + F12, provided that the game and other software do not use it, and test it in play.

If Steam lists the screenshot but the image is black or incomplete
A black or incomplete capture is different from a shortcut that failed entirely. Rendering mode, Overlay compatibility, anti-cheat or protected content, and competing capture software can affect what appears in the image. As a troubleshooting experiment, try windowed or borderless mode, or use the game’s own screenshot feature; neither is a guaranteed fix for every title.
Steam screenshots versus other capture methods
- Steam screenshot: Captured through Steam’s Overlay and available in Steam’s screenshot manager and uploader.
- Operating-system screenshot: Captured with a Windows, macOS, or Linux tool. It may be better for desktop windows or selected regions, but it will not necessarily appear in Steam’s manager.
- Game-native screenshot: Captured using a game-specific command, which may offer features such as hiding the HUD. The key and save location depend on the game.
- Third-party capture: Tools such as OBS Studio and ShareX offer separate capture workflows. Their images do not become Steam screenshots automatically.
Use a game-native or separate capture tool when Steam’s Overlay is unavailable or the game offers a better capture mode. Use an operating-system tool for a desktop or launcher window. These alternatives require their own setup and do not use Steam’s Screenshot Uploader.
Steam Deck and controller users
This guide covers the Steam desktop client and its keyboard shortcut. Steam Deck uses controller-oriented controls and a different interface, so F12 and the desktop settings path should not be treated as Deck instructions.
