Minecraft hosting means keeping a world available for other players, but it can mean very different things: a simple Realm, a server on your own computer, a managed game server, or a self-administered VPS. Choose your edition first—Java and Bedrock are not natively cross-play compatible—then match the hosting model to your need for mods, control, uptime, and maintenance.
What Minecraft hosting includes
A server is more than a world file. It combines the server software, a machine to run it, a management layer, network access, and storage for the world and its backups. A game panel may provide a console, file access, scheduled restarts, installers, and restore tools; the machine supplies CPU, memory, and disk; networking makes the server reachable from players.
Those pieces matter together. A large RAM allocation cannot compensate for a weak or throttled CPU, slow storage, distant data center, poor network, or a plugin that stalls the game. Likewise, an advertised backup is useful only if it is retained, accessible, and restorable.
Choose Java or Bedrock before buying
| Players or use case | Edition guidance |
|---|---|
| Windows, macOS, or Linux players using Java | Java Edition server. The official Java server download works only with Java Edition. |
| Windows Bedrock, mobile, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Fire, or Chromebook players | Bedrock is the native cross-play family, subject to platform accounts and online-subscription requirements. |
| Java players who want extensive server mods or plugins | Usually Java, with the exact server software and mod loader required by the intended setup. |
| Mixed Java and Bedrock group | They do not natively share a Realm or ordinary server. A Java server may use a compatibility layer such as Geyser and Floodgate, but that can bring version, authentication, feature, and gameplay limitations. |
Bedrock add-ons and Marketplace content are not interchangeable with Java mods and plugins. Self-hosted Bedrock servers are available for Windows and Ubuntu Linux, but console users may face connection or server-discovery restrictions that do not apply in the same way to Windows and mobile clients.

Before paying, check every player’s edition and platform, whether console access is essential, the desired Minecraft version, and whether the intended server software supports it. For official Bedrock server requirements and setup, see the Bedrock server download page and Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide.
Compare the hosting options
| Option | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Realms | Small private groups wanting a simple, always-online, mostly vanilla world | Less configuration and server-software control than a conventional host |
| Home computer or home server | Technical owners, local play, or temporary worlds | The owner handles uptime, networking, security, power, updates, and backups |
| Managed game host | Most groups needing a panel, support, and configurable server software | Recurring cost and provider-dependent resource limits, support, and renewal terms |
| VPS | Experienced administrators wanting root access or multiple services | The owner administers the operating system, firewall, runtime, updates, monitoring, and backups |
| Dedicated server | Large or performance-sensitive communities needing exclusive hardware | Higher cost and administration burden |
What Realms offers—and what it does not
Realms is Microsoft’s hosted subscription service, not a general-purpose server machine. The official U.S. Realms page currently displays $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms, $7.99 per month for Bedrock Realms Plus, and $7.99 per month for Java Realms. Java allows the owner plus 10 simultaneous players; Bedrock Realms allows the owner plus two, while Realms Plus allows the owner plus 10. Invited friends do not need their own Realms subscription. The page also states a 30-day trial for qualifying users. Prices and offers can vary by region or change, so confirm the checkout total and terms on the official Realms page.
Realms includes backups and three world slots, but Java and Bedrock Realms remain separate; it is not a route to native cross-edition play. Worlds can be downloaded for 18 months after a subscription expires, according to the official page. Realms is a good fit when ease and privacy matter more than plugins, server-side mods, custom software, or deep configuration. Microsoft describes Realms as an add-on subscription; the Minecraft EULA says the service is hosted by Microsoft and grants permission to use it rather than ownership of the underlying hardware.
How much memory and processing power do you need?
There is no reliable universal player-to-gigabyte formula. Workload depends on edition and server software, view and simulation distances, loaded chunks, exploration and world generation, farms and entities, plugins or mods, player activity, and what else shares the machine. These are starting estimates, not guarantees:

- 4–8 GB RAM: a typical small community, moderate plugins, or lighter modpack.
- 8–16 GB or more: heavier modpacks, larger communities, multiple worlds, or demanding automation.
More allocated memory is not automatically better and will not cure a slow CPU, poor storage, excessive entities, a misbehaving plugin, or bad tick behavior. Minecraft server performance is often constrained by main-thread CPU speed and tick time. Prefer modern, high-clock-speed CPU performance, predictable rather than heavily oversold CPU allocation, and SSD or NVMe storage. Locate the server near most players, and tune view distance, simulation distance, and entity settings to the workload. Do not treat a provider’s slot count as a performance guarantee.
Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM, an Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-7600 APU or equivalent, and 180 MB to 1 GB of available storage among current official Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements. Those are minimums, not a promise of smooth play for a large or demanding world. The listed supported systems are Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later.
Choosing a managed Minecraft host
Evaluate the whole service rather than choosing by introductory price or RAM headline. Check these details before committing:
- Compatibility: Java or Bedrock, exact Minecraft versions, and explicit support for the intended Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or other server software.
- Control: console access, SFTP or file manager, custom server JAR support, mod/plugin installation, and world upload and download.
- Resources: CPU allocation and limits, storage type, memory, player-slot restrictions, and whether advertised resources are shared.
- Network: data-center locations, DDoS protection, IPv4 availability and possible extra charges, and DNS or subdomain tools.
- Recovery: automatic and manual backups, schedule, retention, off-site storage, downloads, and self-service restore.
- Operations and billing: support hours, restart scheduling, SLA scope and exclusions, refund rules, cancellation process, renewal price, and what happens to files after cancellation.
“Unlimited players” usually describes a contractual slot policy, not unlimited practical capacity. An uptime claim is not a guarantee of low latency or healthy tick performance, and DDoS protection does not replace account security, firewalling, updates, or moderation.

Self-hosting on your own machine
Home hosting avoids a separate game-host subscription, but the operator supplies the hardware, power, internet connection, administration, and recovery plan. It works best when downtime is acceptable, broadband upload capacity is adequate, and the owner is comfortable managing network exposure. A server open to the internet also needs careful operating-system updates, strong access credentials, minimal operator privileges, and firewall rules.
Set up the official Java server
- Create a dedicated directory and download the current server JAR from Minecraft’s official Java server page. Do not hard-code an old filename or assume every release uses the same Java runtime.
- Run the JAR once from that directory. The official launch pattern is
java -Xmx4G -Xms4G -jar minecraft_server.<version>.jar nogui. Replace the filename with the downloaded one; `nogui` disables the graphical interface. The official instructions require command-line Java, and Windows may require Java to be configured in PATH. - Open
eula.txt. Read the terms and change the acceptance line only if you agree to the EULA, then save it. - Start the server again, then edit
server.propertiesto set the world and gameplay options you need. Use the current release and software documentation for matching runtime requirements. - Allow the server through the host firewall and, for internet access, configure the router to forward the configured server port to the machine’s current local address. Use the port in the configuration and current software guidance rather than assuming one number covers every setup.
- Test on the same machine or LAN first, then test from a genuinely external network. Make a backup before inviting players.
Set up the official Bedrock Dedicated Server
- Download the current Windows or Ubuntu archive from the official Bedrock server page and follow Microsoft’s setup guide.
- Extract it to a dedicated directory, review the server configuration, and allow the server through the operating-system firewall.
- For a world you already own, stop the server before copying files. Microsoft documents placing a copied world folder in the server’s
worlds/directory; configure the server to use that world as directed in the guide. - Test with a compatible Bedrock client on the local network, then verify internet access and platform-specific console requirements before relying on it for a group.
- Schedule and test backups before the world becomes valuable.
LAN hosting generally serves devices on the same local network. Internet hosting needs a reachable address or relay. Port forwarding maps a router’s public port to the server machine; a firewall must also permit traffic. Double NAT, ISP port blocking, or carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) may prevent inbound connections even when router settings look correct. A dynamic public IP can change, which may require dynamic DNS. IPv4 and IPv6 availability varies by provider and player network.
Managed hosts and VPS setup
With a managed game host, select the edition, Minecraft version, and server software in its panel, then configure the world and access controls. Before migration, verify that the plan supports the specific loader or server implementation rather than relying on a generic “mod support” label. Use the panel’s console and file tools to install or upload compatible files, and test with a small group before inviting everyone.

A VPS gives more control but also makes the operator responsible for the operating system, runtime, server software, firewall, backups, monitoring, and updates. Use it if you can maintain those components; a control panel or one-click installer does not remove the need to secure the machine or understand its resource limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mods, plugins, and add-ons are different
- Plugins usually target a server implementation such as Paper or a compatible platform. They are commonly server-side, but each plugin’s requirements still apply.
- Mods require a compatible mod loader and often need installation on both server and clients.
- Modpacks bind together Minecraft version, loader, Java/runtime requirements, mods, and dependencies. Server and client pack builds must align.
- Bedrock add-ons belong to the Bedrock ecosystem and are not Java mods or Java plugins.
Confirm the exact Minecraft release, loader, server software, and dependencies before installing anything. A plugin for one implementation may not work on another, and mixing incompatible components can prevent startup or damage a world.
Back up worlds and migrate carefully
Keep at least one scheduled backup and take a manual one before updates, mod changes, or migration. Store a copy separately from the live server, retain multiple restore points, download a copy you control, and periodically test a restore. Stop the server before copying active world files so the backup is not inconsistent.
- Download the latest world and preserve an untouched original copy.
- Confirm the source and destination are both Java or both Bedrock. Changing editions is a conversion project, not a routine upload.
- Check world size, transfer limits, and destination storage before uploading.
- Recreate operators, allowlists, bans, settings, permissions, plugins, mods, and resource packs as appropriate.
- Test the imported world on a staging server, then invite a small group.
- Keep the original Realm or host until the new world and player access are verified; make sure players use the new address.
For a Realm, review its downloadable backup and world-export options before ending the subscription. The official Realms page says worlds remain downloadable for 18 months after expiration; do not treat that window as a substitute for maintaining your own copy.

Troubleshoot connection and performance problems
Players cannot connect
- Check edition first: a Java client cannot ordinarily join a Bedrock server or vice versa.
- Match the exact release. Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance notes that the client version must match the server; snapshots and previews may not join ordinary release servers.
- Match server software, mod-loader version, and modpack build; ensure clients have required mods or resource packs.
- Verify the address and configured port, and confirm the server process is running and listening.
- Check the machine firewall, router firewall, correct internal IP, port forwarding, and server bind address.
- Test from outside the host’s LAN. If external access fails, investigate double NAT, CGNAT, ISP restrictions, IPv4/IPv6 mismatch, or stale DNS.
- Inspect console output, latest logs, and crash reports. For a world or update failure, stop the server and restore a known-good backup.
Console players may not be able to discover or directly connect to every self-hosted Bedrock server. Platform networking differs from Windows and mobile, so verify a supported connection method before choosing self-hosting; a Realm may be simpler for a console-heavy group.
The server is lagging
RAM use alone does not identify the cause. Check tick-time data, timings or profiler output where available, and logs. Look for main-thread CPU saturation, chunk generation, excessive entities or redstone, a broken plugin or mod, long garbage-collection pauses, slow storage, network latency, or provider throttling. Reduce view or simulation distance and entity load when appropriate; adding memory will not solve a CPU or network bottleneck.
Safety and Minecraft rules
Use legitimate accounts, keep the server and management panel updated, use strong unique passwords, restrict operator privileges, and establish moderation and reporting rules. Collect as little personal data as possible, especially when children play. DDoS protection is not a replacement for secure accounts, firewall configuration, software updates, or moderation.
Mojang/Microsoft’s EULA and Usage Guidelines govern use of Minecraft content and server activity. The EULA permits online play with server software but restricts unauthorized distribution or commercial use of game content and says third-party tools and services must not appear official. Review the current terms before monetizing a server; paid ranks, crates, cosmetics, gameplay advantages, advertising, and donations can raise policy questions. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.
Quick Recap
Pick a hosting model for your situation
- Small private Bedrock group: Bedrock Realms is the lowest-maintenance fit if its player tier and configuration limits work.
- Small vanilla Java group: Java Realms prioritizes simple setup and always-online play.
- Java plugins or modpacks: Choose a managed Java host that explicitly supports the required implementation and loader.
- Bedrock group needing more control than Realms: Compare managed Bedrock hosts, but confirm console connection requirements first.
- Experienced administrator: A VPS offers root access and flexibility if you will maintain security, backups, and updates.
- Large community or multiple demanding worlds: Consider high-resource managed infrastructure or dedicated hardware, with capacity evaluated against actual workload.
- Temporary or local play: A LAN world or home-hosted server may be sufficient if always-on availability is unnecessary.
