A Dreamcast can use an SD card as extra storage for homebrew assets, but not as extra RAM. In a 2021 demonstration, developer Ian Micheal streamed data through a serial-port SD adapter at roughly 600 KB/s—slow for memory swapping, yet useful for loading assets that would otherwise take up the console’s 16 MB of main memory.
What the SD-card cache does—and does not do
The Dreamcast still has 16 MB of main memory, provided by two 8 MB SDRAM chips. An SD card attached to the console’s serial port does not expand that RAM or offer RAM-like latency. Instead, homebrew software can keep frequently used code and data in memory while reading larger or less frequently needed assets from the card when needed.
At roughly 600 KB/s, the serial connection is too slow to serve as swap space, but can supply assets that a game might otherwise have to keep resident in RAM. Levels, textures, music, and other content that can be loaded ahead of use are better candidates than data the game must access with the speed of memory. The method also supports writes, so a program can store generated files such as saves or screenshots on the card. Hackaday’s June 4, 2021 report describes the technique and its approximate throughput.
What the DOOM demonstration showed
The demonstration used a DOOM port running at 640×480 with the serial SD reader providing cached assets. Hackaday reported improved framerates, but did not publish an independently verified frame-rate measurement. Micheal expected further optimization might reach a steady 30 FPS; that was a development goal, not a demonstrated guarantee.

The report also said Micheal planned to try the approach with Dreamcast ports of Quake and Hexen and publish code showing FAT32-card reads and writes. Those plans should not be mistaken for confirmed releases or compatibility claims.
Hardware and card requirements
The required hardware is a third-party Dreamcast serial-port SD card adapter, which connects to the console’s serial port. A compatible FAT32 microSD card is a separate accessory. Available documentation does not establish a recommended capacity, brand, speed class, or universal compatibility list, so check the adapter and the homebrew software’s documentation before buying.

This setup is distinct from an optical-drive emulator: the adapter uses the serial port to provide runtime file access for software that supports it. It does not replace the Dreamcast’s optical drive or make every game load from SD.
Software support and implementation
KallistiOS, an independent SDK for Dreamcast development, documents SH4 serial I/O, cache and store-queue management, serial-based SD readers, and an example for accessing an SD-card filesystem. These tools give developers building homebrew a way to integrate the hardware, but they do not mean existing games automatically support serial SD storage.

Because the serial link is much slower than main memory, developers need to decide which assets can be fetched without disrupting play and when to read them. The Dreamcast Wiki’s documentation on its 16 MB SDRAM subsystem explains why careful memory placement and access patterns remain important even when a card supplies bulk assets.

The two approaches use SD cards for different jobs. A serial-port cache is external hardware used by compatible homebrew to read and write selected files during runtime. An optical-drive emulator is an internal replacement for the disc drive, intended to load disc images. The Hackaday report explicitly distinguishes Micheal’s cache method from replacing the optical drive with an SD-based device.

When evaluating an SD setup, check whether it connects externally through the serial port or replaces the internal drive, whether it supports runtime asset streaming or whole-game loading, what throughput and latency are documented, how reversible the installation is, and which software supports it. The reported serial link’s roughly 600 KB/s figure describes this technique, not every Dreamcast SD solution.
