Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in February 2022 that Fortnite would not be updated for Steam Deck support because Epic was not confident it could combat cheating across the range of Linux kernel configurations, including custom ones. That was a dated statement—not confirmation of Fortnite’s current SteamOS or Proton status.
What Sweeney said about Fortnite and Steam Deck
In a February 7, 2022 exchange, a user asked whether Epic would update Fortnite to make Proton or Wine compatible with Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye on Linux. Sweeney replied, “Fortnite no, but there’s a big effort underway to maximize Easy Anti Cheat compatibility with Steam Deck.” GameSpot reported the exchange; PC Gamer also covered it.
Asked why Fortnite was excluded, Sweeney said Epic lacked confidence it could “combat cheating at scale under a wide array of kernel configurations including custom ones.” The concern was about reliably defending a large competitive game across varied Linux setups—not a claim that Linux players generally cheat.
Why Linux configurations mattered to Epic
Anti-cheat systems need to work against the ways a game can be modified or observed. Sweeney’s concern was that Linux users can run different kernel configurations, including custom ones, making it harder for Epic to trust that its protections would work consistently across the supported environment.

He also described anti-cheat as dependent on a game’s threat model: the number of players and the incentives to sell cheats or gain status by cheating. In GameSpot’s account, Sweeney contrasted Fortnite with smaller games and said a solution sufficient for one title might not be sufficient for another with far more players. GameSpot reported his figure of 60 million active players in that 2022 discussion; it is a historical figure attributed to Sweeney, not a current player count.
There was also a product-support consideration. GameSpot reported that Sweeney questioned the size of the market for non-Steam-hosted games on the Steam Deck, which then had limited availability. That supports reading the decision as a support choice shaped by both security concerns and product considerations; it does not establish market size as Epic’s sole reason.

Epic’s later anti-cheat measures do not confirm Steam Deck support
Epic’s current Fortnite competitive-rules page describes several PC anti-cheat measures. For tournament play, it requires Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU enabled on PC. The page explains that IOMMU helps control device access to system memory and protect game memory from cheat hardware. It also describes Easy Anti-Cheat kernel-level protection while Fortnite runs, exploit fixes, measures to make game systems harder to reverse-engineer, suspicious-behavior monitoring using data and machine learning, and ongoing detection work.
Those requirements and safeguards describe Epic’s stated approach to PC tournaments; they do not establish that Fortnite supports SteamOS, Linux, or Proton. Epic says about 95% of Fortnite PC players likely already meet Windows 11 compatibility requirements or can enable them without new hardware. That figure concerns those requirements, not Linux compatibility. See Epic’s Fortnite anti-cheat requirements page.

Epic Player Support says its cheating-offense policy changed in April 2025: a first offense results in a one-year matchmaking ban, and a second results in a lifetime ban. During a first ban, the player can still log in and chat, but cannot enter Epic- or creator-made matchmaking experiences or spectate. The policy provides context for Epic’s enforcement approach, but the support page does not connect it to Steam Deck compatibility. See Epic Player Support’s explanation of cheating offenses.

In an October 31, 2024 update, Respawn said Apex Legends would block Linux access, including Linux on Steam Deck, because it could not reliably distinguish a legitimate Steam Deck from a malicious cheat presenting itself as one through Linux. Respawn said players could still use a handheld for Apex by installing Windows. This is an Apex decision, not evidence of Fortnite’s present-day status. - Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Is Fortnite supported on Steam Deck now?
The sources cited here do not establish Fortnite’s present-day SteamOS or Proton compatibility. Sweeney’s no-support statement dates to February 2022, and Epic’s later descriptions of PC tournament security and cheating penalties do not say that Fortnite has been enabled on Steam Deck. Treat the 2022 statement as historical rather than as a current compatibility announcement.
