The Steam Deck Has a Surprisingly Good Microphone—With One Important Catch

The Steam Deck’s dual-mic array is a strong convenience feature for voice chat. Here’s how it performs, where it falls short, and what LCD and OLED owners should know.

Yes: the Steam Deck’s built-in microphone is unusually good for a handheld, especially for casual voice chat. Its dual-microphone array and audio processing can keep speech clear while the Deck’s own speakers are playing. It is not a studio mic, though, and your experience depends on the app, audio settings and whether you have an LCD or OLED model.

What microphone does the Steam Deck have?

Valve lists a dual-microphone array among the Steam Deck’s features and says the onboard microphones can be used to chat with friends. The small openings are integrated into the display area. Valve does not document a specific beam-forming algorithm, so it is safer to describe the hardware as a dual-mic array rather than promise a particular directional effect. Valve’s technical specifications and hardware overview describe the feature.

That setup matters because the microphones are several inches from your mouth, unlike a headset boom mic. The Deck has to capture speech from a distance while managing room sound and audio from its own speakers. Multiple microphones give the system more information to work with; that is a plausible contributor to its performance, not a published explanation of Valve’s exact signal-processing method.

Why does it sound so good for a handheld?

The strength is conversational clarity, not pristine recording quality. Launch-era testing by GamesBeat described the sound as crisp and clear for communication, and noted background-noise handling. Valve’s audio stack and noise suppression help make the internal mic practical even when the speakers are active.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Echo cancellation and noise suppression can reduce speaker feedback and ambient sound, but they cannot eliminate every room or application problem. Community reports discuss echo cancellation, noise cancellation and automatic volume control in desktop audio settings; these are useful clues, not a guarantee that every SteamOS version or app exposes identical controls. A Steam Community discussion covers those controls, while a separate speaker-use report describes usable chat with the speakers playing.

There is a limit: pushing input level too high can distort the signal. An independent GamingOnLinux review reported distortion at high input levels. Start at a moderate level and adjust only if listeners say you are too quiet.

How good is it in chat, games and recordings?

Steam voice chat

Steam chat is a natural place to use the integrated hardware and software. Friends should generally be able to understand you in ordinary play, especially in a reasonably quiet room. Voice-chat compression can make a call sound different from a local recording, so judge the mic in the service you actually use.

Discord

Discord can be used on the Deck, but input selection and audio routing depend on how it is running and which device the app sees. Discord’s documented Mic Test applies to its desktop and browser clients; do not assume that the same test is available in every Deck setup. See Discord’s Mic Test instructions.

In-game voice chat

A clear system test does not guarantee clear game chat. Users have reported robotic, choppy, quiet or distorted voice output in particular games even when other mic tests sounded fine. That points to a possible game codec, input-selection, routing, gain or compatibility problem—not necessarily a bad microphone. Examples appear in one game-chat report, another report and a further discussion.

Recording and streaming

You can use the built-in mic as an input in desktop recording software, but a raw recording may reveal room ambience, a thinner sound or clipping that noise processing in chat conceals. For regular streams, narration or podcasts, a close-talk headset mic or a suitable USB microphone is a better tool. A USB mic’s compatibility can vary by model and application, so verify the exact setup rather than assuming every device is plug-and-play.

LCD versus OLED: the headphone-jack difference

Both versions have a dual-microphone array, but their 3.5mm headphone behavior is not the same. This is the most important qualification if you plan to use wired earbuds or headphones while speaking.

Model Built-in mic Using 3.5mm headphones Practical result
Steam Deck LCD Dual-microphone array Valve’s support documentation says the built-in mic is unavailable while a 3.5mm plug is connected. Use a headset with its own mic, or another compatible input, if you need wired audio and a microphone together.
Steam Deck OLED Dual-microphone array Review coverage reports that the onboard mic can remain in use with 3.5mm headphones. You can use wired headphones and the internal mic at the same time.

Valve’s audio troubleshooting guidance covers the LCD limitation; Tom’s Hardware’s OLED coverage describes the OLED behavior. For the LCD model, the limitation is expected rather than evidence of a faulty mic.

What to expect from Bluetooth headsets

Bluetooth headset microphones can trigger a lower-quality two-way audio profile: microphone capture works, but playback quality drops. Valve’s Steam client notes warn about this trade-off when Bluetooth mic capture is active. It reflects the wireless audio path, not poor quality from the Deck’s internal mic. Valve’s client updates and the SteamOS Bluetooth issue history document the behavior and its support context.

If you want wireless chat without relying on that Bluetooth profile, a 2.4-GHz headset with a USB receiver may be a better fit. Check that the receiver works with SteamOS and your dock or USB-C arrangement; not all dongles are interchangeable.

How to test the mic in your actual setup

  1. Update SteamOS and the Steam client so you are testing the current software available to your Deck.
  2. Start with the built-in mic and the speakers active. Hold the Deck in your usual playing position and speak normally rather than leaning toward the screen.
  3. Begin at a moderate input level. Raise it gradually if you sound too quiet; maximum gain can introduce distortion.
  4. Make a short recording in desktop audio software, then listen for clipping, room noise and intelligibility.
  5. Test Steam voice chat separately, followed by the specific game or Discord setup you intend to use. A good local sample does not confirm that an app has selected the same input.
  6. If you use an LCD with wired headphones, test again with the headset’s mic or another input: connecting a 3.5mm plug disables the LCD’s internal mic according to Valve’s support page.

SteamOS menus and audio controls can differ by release, mode and application, so check the current interface rather than relying on an old menu path. In the app you are testing, confirm the selected input device and review any available microphone level, noise suppression, echo cancellation or automatic-gain controls.

Troubleshoot common problems

Friends cannot hear me, or I sound too quiet

  • Confirm the game or chat app has selected the Deck’s internal microphone rather than another input.
  • Check the app’s own input level or voice threshold as well as the system input level.
  • Speak from your normal handheld position; the mic is not close to your mouth like a headset boom.
  • Raise gain in small steps and listen for distortion instead of setting it to maximum immediately.

The mic is clear in a test but bad in one game

Check the game’s input selection and voice settings first. If other apps sound normal, the difference may be the game’s voice processing, routing or compatibility rather than the mic hardware. Community reports show that game-chat results can differ from system tests, but they do not establish one universal cause.

People hear echo or game audio

Echo cancellation is helpful, not infallible. Lower speaker volume, reduce mic input level if it is high, and test in the target chat app. Room acoustics and that app’s processing also affect how much speaker sound reaches other players.

Bluetooth works, but playback sounds worse

This is a known trade-off when a Bluetooth headset uses its microphone for two-way audio. Try the Deck’s internal mic with separate headphones where the model supports it, or consider a compatible 2.4-GHz headset.

The mic stopped working after plugging in wired headphones

On the LCD, this is expected with a 3.5mm connection. Use a headset mic or another input. The OLED is reported to support the internal mic alongside 3.5mm headphones.

The mic performs poorly under Windows

Users have reported low level, static and apparent single-mic behavior under Windows. These are community reports, not proof that every Windows installation has the same fault; driver and software configuration may matter. One report is documented in the Steam Community discussion.

Should you use the built-in mic or add another?

  • Use the internal mic for casual multiplayer chat, speaker-based handheld play and quick calls where convenience matters more than studio sound.
  • Choose a wired headset mic if you own an LCD and want to use the 3.5mm jack, play in a noisy room or need consistent close-talk capture with less room sound.
  • Consider a 2.4-GHz wireless headset if you want wireless gaming chat and want to avoid Bluetooth’s two-way playback compromise. Check receiver and SteamOS compatibility first.
  • Use a USB mic for docked streaming, narration or recording when desk space and cables are acceptable. Confirm support for your particular model and software.
  • Consider a clip-on mic if you prefer earbuds but want the mic closer to your mouth; it adds another accessory and may bring a cable, battery or pairing step.

The OLED is a useful convenience upgrade if you specifically want wired headphones while retaining the onboard mic, but an LCD owner who only wants occasional voice chat does not need to replace the Deck: a headset or another compatible mic can address the limitation.
