If Apex Legends will not update, first check whether EA or your platform is having an outage; local repairs cannot fix a service problem. If services are working, restart the game and device, check the platform’s download queue, then use the repair steps for your specific platform. The right fix depends on whether the update is missing, stuck, incomplete, or installed but unable to launch.

Identify the update problem

What you see What it may indicate First thing to check
No update appears Automatic updates are off, another download is ahead in the queue, a rollout is still in progress, or a service issue is preventing the update. Check the platform’s update queue and service status.
“Waiting for download” or stuck at a percentage A paused queue, client cache, connection, storage, filesystem, or damaged download may be involved. Check the queue and available storage; on the EA app, clear its cache.
“Game version does not match host” Your local game may be on an older or incomplete patch. Complete any pending update and restart Apex.
A progress bar appears on Apex’s Steam launch screen Steam may still be applying the update in the background. Wait for Steam to finish before launching again.
The update finishes, but Apex crashes or will not launch Corrupted files, an anti-cheat problem, outdated system software or drivers, or background software may be responsible. Restart, then repair or verify the game files.
Cosmetics, currency, or progress seem missing This may be an account or server synchronization issue rather than a failed update. Confirm the linked EA Account and check service status.
The update keeps reinstalling Damaged local files, low storage, permissions, or a platform storage/database issue may be involved. Check storage and try the platform’s repair or file-check tools.

Check Apex and platform services first

Check the EA server-status page for Apex Legends and the service you use to play: Steam, PlayStation Network, Xbox services, or Nintendo services. Check official EA Help and Apex announcements as well. EA advises checking service status before treating download, login, or missing-content symptoms as local faults; see its cache troubleshooting guidance.

A green status indicator makes a broad outage less likely, but it cannot confirm that your particular region, ISP, platform account, or connection is working normally. If other players are reporting the same issue or a service is degraded, wait for it to recover rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Try these low-risk steps on any platform

  1. Close Apex completely. Do not leave it suspended in the background.
  2. Restart the device. On PC, exit Steam or the EA app as well, then reopen the client. On a console, restart or shut it down fully rather than only returning to the home screen.
  3. Inspect the update queue. Make sure Apex is not paused and check whether another download or client update is ahead of it.
  4. Check free storage and connection. Pause other large downloads, confirm that other online services work, and avoid repeatedly canceling and restarting the patch.

EA’s Apex error-code guidance recommends restarting the game and system, repairing PC files, reinstalling when necessary, and updating the game when the client and host versions differ.

Fix Apex updates on PC

EA app: clear its cache

  1. Open the EA app and its main menu.
  2. Select Help, then App Recovery.
  3. Choose Clear Cache, then reopen the app and retry the update.

On Windows 10 or 11, you can also open Start > All Apps > EA > App Recovery > Clear Cache. EA says this can help when a download is stuck at a percentage, remains on “Waiting for download,” or the app is stuck offline or fails to show installed games. It does not fix an outage. See EA’s cache instructions.

EA app: repair Apex files

  1. Open Library and find Apex Legends.
  2. Select the game’s Manage icon.
  3. Choose Repair and let the check finish before launching.

This can replace or reacquire damaged game files. EA documents the process in its crash and freeze guidance and Apex error-code help.

EA app: diagnose a download that stops at 4 GB or cannot create a folder

If a download consistently stops at 4 GB, check the destination drive’s filesystem. EA identifies FAT32 as a possible cause because it cannot handle a single file larger than 4 GB. A “Create Folder Error” can point to installation-folder permissions. Check the chosen drive and folder before repeatedly reinstalling; if permissions or the location are the issue, EA recommends trying a different installation location and running the app as administrator when appropriate. Its download and installation troubleshooting covers these cases.

There is no single reliable free-space figure for every Apex patch and platform. Leave room for the download and temporary files used while the patch is unpacked or replaces existing files. If antivirus, controlled-folder access, a firewall rule, or another background program may be blocking the install, test that possibility carefully; do not permanently disable security protection.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.

Steam: check the queue and finish background installation

  1. Open Steam and select Downloads.
  2. Check that Apex is not paused and whether another game or Steam update is ahead of it.
  3. Resume the Apex download and allow Steam to complete installation.

If Apex shows a progress bar at launch, EA says Steam may still be updating the game in the background. Wait for it to finish before troubleshooting further; see EA’s Apex error-code guidance.

Steam: verify the installed files

  1. Open Library and right-click Apex Legends.
  2. Select Properties, then Installed Files.
  3. Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to complete.

Steam’s game-launch troubleshooting recommends verification when a game will not launch; damaged files may need to be reacquired. Verification checks installed game files. It is not the same as clearing Steam’s download cache, and it will not resolve a server-side failure.

If Steam is in Offline Mode, return it to online mode and let the client check for updates. Steam notes that the client or game files may need updating when a game is marked ready but will not start offline; see Steam’s Offline Mode guidance. If a download still will not progress, clearing Steam’s download cache is a separate secondary troubleshooting step; labels can vary by client version and operating system.

Fix Apex updates on PlayStation

Check for the game and system updates

From the game’s options menu, choose Check for Update; the precise location can vary between PS4 and PS5 interface versions. Restart the console and install any available PlayStation system software update before retrying.

Use Safe Mode tools only when simpler steps fail

Sony’s Safe Mode instructions explain how to enter Safe Mode. On PS5, turn the console off by holding the power button for three seconds; once it is off, hold the button again and release after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first. Connect the controller with USB and press the PS button.

On PS5, Repair Console Storage does not erase data. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database offers Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database. Sony says clearing the cache may help with system-feature or performance problems; rebuilding scans the drive and creates a new content database. On PS4, relevant Safe Mode options include Update System Software and Rebuild Database.

Do not choose Initialize PS4, Reset PS5, or reinstall system software as routine Apex troubleshooting: reset and initialization options can erase data. If Apex is installed on external USB storage and continues to fail or crash on PS5, PlayStation support suggests moving it to internal storage; see PlayStation’s game-launch troubleshooting.

Fix Apex updates on Xbox

  1. Open My Games & apps and select Apex Legends.
  2. Press the Menu button, choose Manage All, then open Updates.
  3. Restart the Xbox, check available storage, pause other downloads, and install any available system update.

EA lists that update path and recommends restarting the Xbox for cache-related issues in its Apex error-code guidance and connection troubleshooting. Check Xbox service status as well. If the update repeatedly fails, canceling and restarting that download may be worth trying before deleting the game; Xbox menus can vary by model and system version. Do not delete saved data as a routine update fix.

Fix Apex updates on Nintendo Switch

  • Restart the Switch, then check for a game update.
  • Install any available system software update and check the console’s online services if the problem involves connecting as well as downloading.
  • Use Nintendo’s corrupted-data check for downloadable software before assuming the entire installation is unusable.
  • If corruption is detected or the update still cannot complete, redownload the software as a later step.

EA’s connection guidance recommends restarting the Switch, clearing its cache, and checking for game updates. Nintendo explains how to check for corrupt data in downloadable software and offers additional downloaded-software troubleshooting. Clearing the console cache removes temporary user data; it is not the same as deleting Apex account progress.

Check connection and storage problems

When downloads fail or slow down

  • Restart the router or modem and, if practical, use a wired connection.
  • Pause other downloads and streaming while Apex updates.
  • Test whether other games or services work; trying another network can help isolate a connection problem.
  • Check whether a VPN, proxy, firewall, security application, or background program is interfering.

EA’s connection troubleshooting recommends checking platform issues, closing background applications, checking service status, and restarting relevant equipment or platforms. A VPN, DNS change, or port-forwarding adjustment is not a guaranteed fix and can create new routing or authentication problems.

When an update stops during installation

Confirm the installation drive has enough free space for both the patch and temporary unpacking or replacement files. Check that an external drive is connected and functioning. On PC, consider the filesystem limitation and folder permissions if the failure occurs at a consistent point. Repeated errors on the same drive may indicate a drive or filesystem problem rather than a bad Apex patch; avoid repeated cancellation loops while diagnosing it.

If Apex updates but will not launch

  1. Restart the device, then repair Apex in the EA app or verify its files in Steam.
  2. Install available Windows or console system updates; on PC, update graphics drivers from the appropriate official source.
  3. Close nonessential background apps and temporarily test whether an overlay or other suspected software is involved.
  4. Read the exact error, especially if it names anti-cheat. EA says anti-cheat integrity errors can result from corrupted files and require troubleshooting beyond waiting for an update.
  5. Reinstall only if file repair, system updates, and other targeted checks fail.

EA’s crash and freeze guidance covers closing background applications, repairing EA app game files, reinstalling when necessary, and keeping system software current. For a specific anti-cheat message, use the relevant instructions on EA’s Apex error-code page.

Resolve “Game version does not match host”

This message generally means your local build is not on the same patch as the server or party host; by itself, it is not evidence of a ban or hardware failure.

  1. Close Apex and check the platform’s update queue.
  2. Resume and complete any pending Apex patch.
  3. Restart the game and, if the update is not offered, restart the device and check again.
  4. On PC, repair or verify the game files.
  5. Check EA and platform service status or official announcements if the mismatch persists.

EA’s error-code guidance identifies an outdated patch as the cause and provides platform-specific update advice. Do not use unofficial downloads to bypass a version mismatch.

If cosmetics, Apex Coins, or progress are missing

  1. Restart Apex and the platform, then check EA and platform service status.
  2. Confirm that the platform is linked to the EA Account where the content belongs.
  3. For paid currency or items, keep the purchase receipt.
  4. If content remains missing after 24 hours, contact EA with the details and proof of purchase where applicable.

EA’s missing-content guidance recommends restarting, verifying the EA Account, checking service status, and contacting support if content is still absent after 24 hours. EA also warns that content sent to the wrong EA Account cannot be transferred to another EA Account.

When to reinstall or contact support

Reinstall only after targeted repairs fail

Consider reinstalling if repair or verification keeps finding problems, the update repeatedly fails despite storage and cache checks, or the installation is visibly corrupted. Before uninstalling, confirm which EA Account is linked, note any custom local settings that matter, ensure there is adequate storage, and use the official storefront where you originally installed Apex. Do not delete unrelated local save data or account information. EA says Apex progress remains available after reinstalling because it is associated with the account; see its error-code guidance.

Give support enough to diagnose the issue

  • Platform and model, plus your EA Account ID or platform identity as appropriate
  • The exact error message or code, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, launch, or login
  • Approximate date and time, server-status result, and free storage available
  • Whether repair or verification completed, and what troubleshooting you tried
  • Screenshots or video; for missing paid content, the purchase receipt
  • For a PC case, DxDiag or EA Error Reporter information if support requests it

EA’s technical-issues support page covers reporting problems and using the EA Error Reporter in the EA app.
