You can permanently close a PlayStation account, but removing a console user, signing out, uninstalling the PlayStation app, or changing your Online ID does not do it. For US accounts, Sony’s current self-service route is the PlayStation app or PlayStation Family app. The closure request has a 30-day freeze period, and closing the account can cost access to purchases, trophies, subscriptions, wallet funds, and child accounts.
What closing a PlayStation account actually does
“PSN account” is still a common name for the account used to sign in to PlayStation services. Sony’s current support instructions call it a PlayStation account. Closing it is a different action from tidying up a device or profile:

Sony documents the closure process for the United States. Menus and available methods can differ by country, account type, app version, or later updates. Sony’s account-closure instructions are the current reference for US users.
How to close the account in the PlayStation app
- Open the PlayStation app and sign in to the account you intend to close.
- Select Settings at the top of the home screen.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Close Your Account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and check that the signed-in account is the right one before confirming.
Sony’s US support page lists this app route; it does not document a PS5 or PS4 system-menu command for closing the account.

How to close it in the PlayStation Family app
- Open the PlayStation Family app and sign in.
- Select Settings at the bottom of the home screen.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Close Your Account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Important for family managers: Sony says closing a family manager account also closes the associated child accounts. Review the family and make arrangements for children before submitting the request.
What happens after you submit the request?
Sony says the closure request enters a 30-day freeze period from receipt of the request. During that period, contact PlayStation Support to cancel the closure and reopen the account. The support page does not specify an exact hour or final-deletion timestamp. Sony’s US Terms of Service describe account termination as irreversible, so contact Support promptly if you change your mind.

After termination, Sony says you cannot sign in and account-linked content and services are no longer retained or accessible. This is account closure, not a promise that every record is instantly erased: Sony’s US Privacy Policy allows information to be retained where needed or permitted for matters such as legal obligations, disputes, enforcement, or security.
What you may lose
- Digital games and purchases: Sony warns that closing an account may remove access to purchased content. Downloaded games may remain installed for a time, but installation does not transfer the account’s license to another account or guarantee ongoing access. A new account will not inherit the old account’s library.
- Trophies, rankings, and scores: Sony’s Terms of Service say these are not retained or accessible after termination. They are not transferable to a replacement account.
- Virtual items, in-game currency, and online progress: Account-linked items and balances may be lost or inaccessible. A game publisher’s separate account system may handle some progress independently, so check with that publisher if you need to preserve it.
- PlayStation Plus and other subscriptions: Sony says subscriptions and information requiring connection to PlayStation services will not be retained or accessible after termination.
- Wallet funds: Do not assume the balance will be paid out or moved. Sony’s terms generally exclude refunds of unused wallet balances after termination except where required by law or provided by the agreement; its US Store policy says wallet top-ups are non-refundable.
- Saves and media: Local saves, screenshots, and clips stored on a console or backup are separate from the account and may remain on that device. Cloud saves or other account-linked data may become inaccessible, particularly if tied to the account or a PS Plus entitlement.
- Family access: If you are the family manager, associated child accounts are affected as described above.
Physical disc games are separate from digital licenses, but online features or downloadable content may still depend on a PlayStation account or a publisher account.

What to do before closing the account
- Verify the Online ID and sign-in email for the account you intend to close, especially if your household has multiple accounts.
- Cancel recurring subscriptions and save the confirmation. Resolve pending refunds, charge disputes, or pre-orders where possible.
- Review your wallet and decide whether to use eligible funds; do not count on a payout or transfer.
- Back up local saves, screenshots, clips, and other console data you want to keep. Account closure does not wipe a PS5, PS4, phone, computer, or external storage.
- Save records you may need later, such as transaction history, subscription status, Online ID, and important support case numbers.
- Check whether you manage a family, and whether a game or service has a separate publisher account you need to manage or unlink independently.
- Download or export data Sony makes available through its account-management or privacy tools, if you want a copy.
- If you are not closing the account yet, remove saved payment methods through account settings rather than assuming account closure is a substitute for that step.
Cancel PlayStation Plus before account closure
Canceling a subscription and closing an account are separate actions. Sony says subscription cancellation normally stops future payments while benefits continue through the already-paid period, but closing the underlying PlayStation account can remove access to PlayStation services. Do not assume those benefits remain available after account closure. Sony’s PS Plus Usage Terms give these console paths; labels can vary with region or system software:
- PS5: Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Payment and Subscriptions → Subscriptions.
- PS4: Settings → Account Management → Account Information → PlayStation Subscriptions.
Sony’s subscription terms say cancellation stops future payments; they do not ordinarily refund payments already made. Review the applicable terms before closing the account.

If you cannot sign in or the app option is missing
Use official PlayStation Support rather than creating a second account or using a third-party deletion service. Sony’s Terms of Service say to have these details ready for an account-closure request:
- Sign-in ID (email address)
- Online ID
- Account security information
Support may need to verify account ownership. Never give your password or verification codes to unofficial services.

If the account is suspended
A suspension is not account closure. Sony says a suspended account may be unable to use account settings such as adding or removing payment methods or canceling subscriptions. Contact PlayStation Support about the suspension and any closure request; do not assume that a suspension, inactivity, or removing the console user closes the account. See Sony’s suspension guidance.
Does account closure erase every trace of your data?
No universal promise of immediate erasure follows from account closure. Sony’s privacy policy describes data it collects and explains that some information may be retained for legal, security, compliance, fraud-prevention, or dispute-related purposes. It also notes that profile details and shared content can be seen or copied by other users, and may appear through third-party sites, apps, or services. Closing the account cannot guarantee removal of screenshots, reposts, archives, or other copies outside Sony’s control.
If your goal is privacy while keeping PlayStation access, review Sony’s current privacy choices and contact its privacy or support channel before closing the account. Closure is the destructive option, not a selective data-cleanup tool; the US materials do not establish one universal self-service control for deleting selected categories of data while keeping the account active.
